Lost a Deal because of Google Maps and Google Palces!

No Whining! Just the facts.

I even know the owners very well, and my wife worked there! Damn! I do SEO for many local businesses, and have great references (which they called).

But because of my lack of knowledge of Google Maps and Places, I lost the deal to a company in California......3,000 miles away

To you guys: HOW IMPORTANT IS GOOGLE MAPS AND PLACES?

Being very hard on myself.....guess I'm not the hot shot I thought I was!

Google Places is extremely important. Just take a look at the Google results for "Hair Salons Sacramento". Which of those pages pop out at you? The ones with a little map bubble thing next to them? With customer reviews showing up right under the listing? Probably.

Not only that, but imagine someone is out with their smartphone driving around. They want to get something to eat so they open their browser or their maps app and search for restruants. Google Places will give them turn by turn directions to a restraunt nearby. Your clients will want to show up high on that search.

Thanks Danr62......now who implements the placing of these? The owners of these businesses or the SEO company

    Appreciate it.

Well, the owner can do it, but someone who knows how to do it can do it better. If you look at local ones you can see that some of them aren't even ever claimed by the business owner but it still has their info, reviews from other sites, etc.

Definitely worth reading up on it, even if you know just enough to sell it and have someone else do the work, no point in leaving easy money on the table.
