VPN with Google Places

I'm not fully understanding this.

Since Google Places and Citations require you to use the same number for best results, how is it you use a VPN to be able to track the leads you are sending the business?

Appreciate any info.

p.s. - Just picked up my first 2 clients for GP today. I know how to do GP, just want to add in the VPN if feedback from WF feels this is necessary.

    Hi Bc27,

I don't think your question is clear enough for anyone to really help.

The only leads you'd be able to track that I can see would be using Google Analytics to show when traffic originated from a Google Places listing to their regular website, is that what you mean?

A lot of folks will land on the Google Places listing and call or visit the establishment directly.

Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network is what you are referring to, right?) has nothing to do with lead tracking.

Anyhow, you may wish to clarify in order to get some assistance.

      Sondor,

I think you pretty much summed it up for me. Sounds like people are NOT using a VPN specifically on the Google Places page as that would screw things up.

I have heard talk about this in general terms and was under the impression the VPN is fine for the actual website, but it also sounded like some were using the VPN for the GP page, which I did not grasp as realistic.

      Thanks for the reply.

Are you talking about tracking phone calls using different phone numbers?

For instance, one phone # for GP, one for organic website, one for PPC, etc?

When you are setting up a Google Place account for a client using their website, you must use your client's proper contact information.

That listing, website and phone number belong to the client.

Where a Virtual Private Number comes into play, is when you are creating a seperate website for a client, or yourself that is intended to be leased or used on a per lead basis for clients.

These websites are typically created by you for the purpose of owning and controlling the property.

Example your client is Bob's Plumbing and in New York.

You set up bobsplumbing.com with their information for their Google Places.

You then decide to purchase plumbersnewyork.com or some other domain with good search volume with the intention of creating a lead generation website.

This is your property and where you would still want to use Bob's Plumbing contact address, however, you would then use a VPN to forward the calls to Bob's Plumbing phone number.

This way you will know the amount of calls your client has received, the time, date, and length of the calls as well.
