Mobile Website Question

I just had a mobile website client ask me this question:



The GoDaddy rep did say that to convert a site to mobile with GoDaddy, you need to buy the domain.mobi and that will automatically convert it. Tell me what the difference is in that and what you are doing because I know there must be some!

  • Ha ha...I don't know what he is talking about but I am pretty sure that buying a mobi domain wont convert your website to mobile.

    • even if there was such a function: a 1-to-1 converted website is never as good a a custom built one. There are a lot of people using WordPress Plugins to convert their dektop sites into mobile sites, but the goal of each site is different so it does not make sense to use the same content.

      I just put the most relevant information on mobile websites a potential customer would need to find my customers. I put the a map, some information, opening times etc.

  • Doubt it, how could just a domain possibly change your whole template to a mobile friendly one.

    I didn't see any samples of that but as a mobile web designer I can say that it can't be a perfect conversion and I guess you will not be able to add whatever features you like or modify it as you wish. If you are going to use a ready-made template for his mobile site, then probably there will be not much difference but if you are doing custom designs, then this will be your selling point.

    Tell him also that he really doesn't need a new domain for his mobile friendly website (unless he chooses to do so) which will save him about $20 a year.

    If he doesn't look satisfied with your answer, move on.

    • A seperate mobile website is the only way to go. Allow the user to really get what he needs. Those other programs don't. Good luck.
  • Having an exact conversion to mobile of your normal website isn't the best option even if they can do that. Mobile websites are different and the user wants fast and easy to access info. Much better to offer a customised mobile website to compliment their exisiting site than just duplicate it.
