I Got My First Mobile Website Client Today!

I talked to the owner of one of those drive up coffee stands today. I asked her for a menu/price list (I planned on building a mobile site to show her later). She didn't have any, and asked me why I wanted one. That was the moment of truth...........

It's amazing how fast one can think in a second! I debated whether to tell her my plans, or something like I was just curious about the menu items. Now, this wasn't a "cold" call, as I see her from time to time, chat a bit about sports (she's a big sports fan). Well, what came out of my mouth was the plan I had. I asked if she knew what a QR code was....... QR what? I explained what it was and that I was planning on making a mobile site for her business. That's as far as I got and she was all over it!

I've checked to see if she has a fb fanpage..... only 1 like. No website. The possibilities are numerous. She's going to get me the menu, and a pic of her logo. I thought that getting some business type cards printed up with the QR code on them, with, check often for specials, thanks for coming by, etc. would be a good idea to have to pass out with each drink ordered.

You know, it's exciting to get the first client, but what I'm most satisfied with is the fact that I didn't shrink back when the opportunity was there. I actually stepped up and made the pitch.

I was up front with her that this was my first site, and that I'd give her a break on price in exchange for being my "guinea pig"!!

I think on those business cards, I'll put a line at the bottom promoting myself as the web designer. She has SO many folks driving through,... contractors, business folks, etc. Who knows who might like to have their own mobile site. Could be a great lead generator.

Finally, THANK YOU folks for the info that you generously share. I've learned a lot here, and have finally started my journey, with feet to the bricks! Ron

Good job Ron, I know how it feels when you get your first mobile website client because I got mine not so long ago. But the way you pitched it is very smart. I am sure that you will get more clients soon, just try to do a wonderful job for your first client.

Yes, that is my TOP priority right now. It's a nice situation, the fact that she has no rigid expectations. This is all new to her too.

I really like seeing people succeed in whatever they set out to do. So, the more customers I can help bring to her, and improve her business, the more satisfied I'll be.

Thanks Adrian. I just went through your WSO. Wow! You know, I'm going to learn to do this for myself, BUT, to get this rolling, I'm tempted to get the first one right away, and your sites look great. When I get the menu list and logo from my client, I'll contact you and see what we can do.

OK I've been around too long! Technology is getting beyond me!

Since I make mobile sites for clients,I thought I'd better get a smartphone for myself
I didn't even know how to answer a call on the damn thing, that's how out of touch I was.

Anyway, I'd like to take my new phone into clients with a printout of a QR code.
My problem is that when they ask me what they do with it, I can't tell them because I don't know myself.

I've downloaded the QR scanning app, but what now?
Do I just point the camera at the QR code, or do I have to press a "start scan" button or something?

      Thanks in advance

Yes.Start scanning the code and you're good to go.
Of course the code must point to something that the business can use as: video on yourtube, coupon page, their mobile website(most don't have one so get them one, using templates or contact me for a more customized solution to this), special offers etc.

You could just search google for how a certain business can use QR Codes futures and how other niches are using QR technology and make a list for the specific niche you are targeting and talk about that when you meet the client.

        Hope it helps,
        Adrian

I am creating it (or having it created) for her at no charge (no set up fee)
I let her know that's a $149 value right there. As far as a monthly charge goes, I'm giving her the rest of the year at $14.99. Then, at the beginning of next year, she'll have the option to renew at $24.99 a month. That gives her time to check it out and see how much increase in business she gets, and if it's worth it to her, while I get some income from it, and the experience of handling a client.

If you've already installed the app, just take a picture of the barcode, like you would a normal image. It should scan it automatically, then send you to wherever the code has imbedded in it.

I have conducted real market research for my offline clients to see if their is any legitimate traffic. Through my research I have found that there is not enough traffic to legitimately charge them for a mobile site.

As a prior "offline business owner" myself I can tell you that nothing will get you fired faster than a negative ROI!

I'd be interested to find out more details about your research. How were the QR codes used? Coupons, daily specials, video greeting? How was the SEO work?

My coffee shop owner would only need to sell a few drinks a month to cover the cost. Are you saying that she won't even get a few extra drinks sold from utilizing a mobile site?

I've created 5 more 4-5 page sites that I'm going to approach the owners of businesses with. A couple people I know, a few I don't. One is a Tattoo shop (I don't know them) I passed by the other day. The name sounded cool, so I looked and found they have a website, but NOT a mobile one.

I recreated the theme of their existing one, created a cool looking decorated qr code with their logo embedded in it, and plan on walking in soon and show them what I have to offer.

Even if I don't sell all of them, I look at the process of creating them as beneficial, cause I'm learning and getting faster at it. Pretty fun stuff!
