How do you get clients to give you control of their website?

OFFLINE MARKETING

Actually I'm wondering a few things ...

Even after a business owner agrees to your services - do they ever balk at the idea of you having access to their control panel, etc.?

What are some ways around that?

Any suggestions?

I cannot recall ever having this brought up.

I just tell them I need user name and pw...and that from now on, I'll be taking care of changes and site upgrades, etc.
...most don't want to deal with the site mechanics in the first place.

They usually ask "whats a control panel" to be honest. As Bruce stated, it's "our" job to do those things. Business owners don't know and don't want to deal with it. Why should they? Thats why they pay us, right?

I tell them that I can install everything for them if they provide me with the login details. Else I hand them out a self-installation-tutorial but I've never met someone who wanted to install all the scripts on theirown.

As others have stated above this is not a problem I have encountered. The hardest part is usually getting them to track the info down. Once they do they are quite happy to let you deal with that side of things, afterall that is what they are paying you for

  Tell them you need their web person to make some changes on their website for you. If they have one.....great....you don't have to worry. If not, they will give you access as at this point, they consider you as the expert.
  
  Also, I have had clients ask me for my business liability insurance policy, just in case I messed up something.

Why would you need to convince your client to give you access? Just explain you require it to complete the job/service properly, explain if you don't have access you can't do the work / what they want, simple
