Restaurant Mobile site question

I am doing a site for a restaurant owned by a friend. His daughter started it with front page but I am going to use WP so they can easily update the specials from there. Here are my Q's:

I want to give him a mobile site as well. Was thinking of using WP
plugin so they could change the specials daily as I don't want to.

OR - I could do an m.xxx and put a click to call for todays specials.

Opinions?
Also - anybody know of a good WP theme for restaurants?

From most people around here using WP for a mobile website is not the way to go. Better to build out a mobile version place on a m.domain like you say.
You could also check out zonicordering.com for a way to have orders.

I agree - i use it on one site I have for a test and it ain't that good!
I'm just thinking that they won't be able to go in and edit the site on a daily basis though for the specials and it would be nice to have the specials viewable on a mobile device.

I would also suggest you build a mobile version outside of wordpress and host it on m.theirdomian.com.

I recently purchased this wordpress theme that I used for a local restaurant.

WordPress - The Restaurant - ThemeForest

If that theme doesn't suit you there are other restaurant related themes on the site.

    I second that too.
The Wp plugin that turns wp into mobile looks poor.
I suggest you get an customized website for him.
I could help you if you want and it can be done within 48h.

Mobile sites are extremely easy to make and you can do whatever you want to them so I'd go with customized webpage also not WP.

I know that - it's the daily changes that I don't want to get involved with like specials of the day etc. That is why I was thinking of WP plugin. If I use a m.xxx then everyday they will have to make chnages and FTP them - I could see them destroying the whole site!

yeah I don't think that I would give them the keys to the car either lol but I'll bet you could find a fiverr that can to do the work for you. This would be a nice little extra income stream for you and a huge benefit to the client.

But you can ask to be paid monthly for those type of changes (for you to do it). I would certainly do that for a client but that's just me I like a lot of income streams.

If you have a Blackberry, Android or iPhone there are WP apps you can use and change anything on the go.

Some great info! Was thinking of maybe putting a link to the main site to see the daily specials. i would think people would like to be able to check out the specials - at least use the tap to call button. Whatever I do they will love it - they don't even know what a mobile site is! Place is in an area where there a bunch of high end restaurants so I will be door knocking when done!

Why put daily specials on the mobile site, or any site? Does this really swing a potential customer's decision. Just sell the restaurant on all it's best attributes on the main site, then just have the mobile site cover the bare bones - description, location, menu, click to call etc.
Forget the daily specials updates, they're not going to make any difference. However, some kind of special offer unique to the site/s could be both a good incentive and a way to track success of your strategy.

If your determined to allow them updates on their mobile website with Wordpress then take a look at Responsive design Wordpress themes on their mobile site. It keeps you from having to create a regular HTML mobile site, a boring plugin or a mobile wordpress theme (unless your a designer).

I didn't catch if the main site was built already but if so they could just use the mobile site with responsive design like a "Special Coupon" only or a "Mobile Daily" special offer. Thus not having to update both sites daily just when there are long term menu changes.

WORDPRESS WHITEBOARD theme and the new TWENTY ELEVEN are both responsive designed themes AND there are more including mobile only themes that could be used ONLY on the m.domain.

How about a "tap to call" daily specials button? Then, have the owner do the daily updates by revising the recorded message as needed. Keeps you from having to do it, and personalizes the message by letting folks hear from the owner, or employee of the actual restaurant. Just a thought.

You can use WP Touch to easily create a mobile site, but making it look very good takes as much work as creating your own mobile site from scratch (if you have any html knowledge). You could always outsource it to people on WF, there are some good, cheap options available.

I would use the m.yourdomain.com subdomain as well.

For those of you that have done restaurant sites om mobile - do you include the entire menu of description of the food in general? Seems like the menu would be quite a bit to put on a mobile site.

You might create a link to a fanpage on the mobilesite where they can post daily specials etc...haha another potential sale to your client.

i will set them up with SMS also. They are on the water so they slow down in the winter. We are going to build the SMS list now so when the slower times kick in we can use it more then. Just gotta find the best system. i want them to be able to do it from the restaurant.

I was hoping something like this could be done, think it could be a huge selling point.

Also after you set it up you could pair it up with an sms campaign. (another upsell) Example. "Today's special, Big Ass Roast Potato Steak for $12.50... VIP's get 50% off. To join our vip club text VIPDEAL to 123456"

I don't think there's anything poor looking about a WP Touch mobile site. WP Touch is a Wrodpress plugin that delivers a mobile version of your blog automatically when it is visited via mobile device. It's a dynamite plugin and works great. I like it so much that I bought the developers version, so I can use it on customer's sites.
