Can Someone Explain SMS Marketing

Hi All,

I'm just starting to look at offline marketing and am looking at starting with mobile websites/QR codes to get a foot in the door.

I was looking to do SMS marketing as an upsell, but i don't really know too much about it. I've been searching the forum but i can only find info in dribs and drabs.

Anyone know where i can find a full explanation or be able to explain it to me here?

I understand how the marketing element works and why it would be good for a business, but where do the phone numbers of the customers come from? Surely if i pitch to a business owner and i need to get the numbers of the customers from them, they will just say why don't they do it themselves??

Are there reseller programs? I'm UK based so are there any reseller programs for UK?

Cheers in advance.

I have found success with custom voice/sms applications for business owners. Getting customer phone numbers is no different than getting an email address, except that the "offer" has to be good enough to get people to cough up their mobile phone number. its not like a throw away email address. People keep their phone numbers for many years, and are tied to it 24/7 these days.

I've had good success with free weekly giveaways to entice people to join, something that doesn't cost the biz owner much, but is a great incentive for people to opt in. So giving away a free large pizza each week, or one free lunch or dinner, or one free round of golf, etc. in a weekly drawing is an excellent incentive to get subscribers.

So how do you go about pitching this to business owners? Its something thats going to be slow to implement - getting customers mobile numbers could take some time.

Well said, thanks. The idea of offering them something they might use (pizza, golf) as an incentive is not something I had considered before.

Short message service (SMS) marketing is a relatively new marketing technique that focuses on the use of text messaging to spread a marketing message. The process involves preparing one or more text messages offering such things as specials, new products, or new information about a product.
Often, those involved in SMS marketing already have a pre-existing relationship with the customer, which is why the phone numbers are easy to get. Despite this, SMS marketing can seem somewhat invasive to many individuals. That is one reason many companies ask customers if it is acceptable to contact them via text messaging.i think this information will be helpful in regards to SMS.Thank you.

This is one reason why I doubt the effectiveness of SMS on a large scale. I can't stand when my phone goes off because I received a text from some marketing company. Even if I have allowed it, it doesn't make it any less annoying.

Of course, I've never attempted SMS marketing. This is just my opinion. How do you SMS marketers avoid annoying your customers? And how often do you send out texts? The text would have to be extremely targeted towards me and my interests for me to accept the practice on my phone.

Thanks in advance for your answers.
