What Is Your Mobile Phone's Screen Resolution?

by WillR
51 replies
For those of us developing mobile apps and mobile websites I think it would be interesting AND beneficial for us to see the variance of screen resolutions people have on their mobile phones nowadays.

To check the screen resolution of your mobile device simply go to this website:
What Is My Screen Resolution? - www.whatismyscreenresolution.com

Alternatively you can scan the QR code to take you right there:

You must visit that website on your mobile device. You will then see the screen resolution number displayed on the screen. Simply post your mobile phone model and your screen resolution like mine below...

This doesnt seem right... 800x1130... android?

I used a QR code generated by firefox to get to the site originally - not sure why it would not properly detect screen size....

    Anyhow second attempt

Looks like i am missing a pixel or 320! lol

It is true. That's why some people have been having issues with redirect scripts that detect mobile width. The Android 2.2 software has a bug that shows the wrong screen resolution from time to time. Talk about annoying!

And it wasnt because firefox generated the QR code on my screen as my resolution is different from 800x1130 too its 1600x900 or 4800x900 (Tri Screen)

        interesting....

i just turned the screen to landscape and refreshed....

This blows my mind. Are the Android developers not aware of this problem? How can they not be?

I first heard of this problem in a post that WillR made on this subject (or maybe it was in an email response ...can't remember for sure). This was several months ago. This very issue with my Samsung Captivate 2.2 not picking up redirects was driving me nuts.

Since that time I've been unable to find any mention of this issue on the Android Forum or any of the other mobile related tech sites that I've searched. I was hoping to find news of a patch, an update or some other solution that Google/Android might have made available to address this problem...no such luck.

What the Hell is the deal with this? Any thoughts?

          Gerry,

The reason you would never see any discussions on this is because there are very little reasons for developers to use the screen width and screen height values. Triggering a redirect is one of very few uses for this data.

I originally read about the problem on a Google forum and that's how I knew it was indeed a common problem.

It seems the workaround for the redirect script is quite simple and I'll be releasing that in the free updates soon.

Im on a HTC Inspire and it shows/has a higher resolution too Jay.
Thats why i cant use my phone to impress a client in a negative way because in fact the site doesnt look bad at all since it has a giant screen and the browser does a really good job resizing everything...

do you still have to zoom in to read the text though? if the site has drop down menus it would normally be a complete pain to navigate...

the sale maybe harder but even if the site does look semi decent - pull up a mobile site with easy to touch navigation etc show them the advantages of the mobile option over non mobile... ie easy click to call, how the site open up google maps etc...

        hope that helps

Oh yeah.. no doubt that a mobile ready site would be better specially when you want to emphasize that people on the go are looking for a quick phone number, a map or something...I just which i could make them feel the real pain showing them a totally messed up site like all those emulators do however, what i see on my phone is not even close to it...

you could always get yourself an itouch and use your HTC as a wireless hotspot... or a no contract smartphone theres plenty to choose from and you would recoup the cost if it nets you just one sale...

            http://www.bestbuy.com/site/No-Contr...at162100050040

i would recommend getting a non contract Android OS if your going this route - i have access to iphone/itouch/ipad and Android OS - it really helps to be able to test your sites on a proper handset, actually i may get one of those Blackberries for testing purposes! lol

Most people seem to assume the iphone is THE phone of the generation. Maybe you should look at getting an iphone because it will give your customers a more realistic impression of what people are seeing. I like to use a phone that people have heard of and know is used by a lot of people as it tends to give the argument more weight.

just checked this with mobilizer - great example why its better to use a real device for testing over an emulator...

For sure. All of those emulators or simulators will always be picking up the screen size of the PC. A lot of them won't work with the user agent redirects either. The only way to be 100% certain a site does or does not have a mobile website is to actually go to that website using one of the popular smartphones. Well that's what I have found anyway...

    My HTC Vivid = 540 x 960 Portrait

A disturbing fact: I just went down to the local AT&T Corporate store and tried out about 15 different live working web enabled phones. I went to about 6 to 8 websites on each phone that has a known mobile version. Every phone had different and mixed results! Many would not bring up the mobile version of a site.

This seems to be a recurring problem and one I hope can at least be somewhat resolved. I know there are a few different redirect scripts out there. Which has the best results? It is not good when you deliver a new mobile website to a client and they can't bring it up on their smartphone!

One thing I do want to mention is that many phones have a setting "Enable Mobile Site Browsing" You want to make sure that is checked.

Will, do you have any suggestions?
