Good E-mail Subject Lines?

So, I'm going to be giving e-mail another go to try to get clients. I have a good idea on how to write good e-mail messages to business owners but one of the hardest parts is making an e-mail subject line that says "READ ME!" and gets good open rates.

So, maybe everyone doing e-mail marketing to get clients can share subject lines that work for them? This way everyone sending e-mails can get their message open rates up.

I will start it off. One subject I was using that was getting me responses back from owners:

"Re: [Business Name] Contact Inquiry"

With and without the Re: was working alright for me.

"[VIDEO] You Need To Fix Your Website, Here's How!"
Then make a short video and tell them why their baby (website) is UGLY!

"[VIDEO] So & So is Kicking Your But On Google, Here's What They Are Doing Right."
Then make a short video about what their competition is doing right.

Adding "Sucks" to any subject line works well.

    Examples:

    Not having customers sucks!

Not being on page one of Google sucks!

    Not dating Zach Waldman sucks!

    You get the idea.

For me, subjects that show the recipient that this is a personal email to them instead of some mass promotion are what get the best results.

I've had good luck with things like "I'm looking for a [type of business] in [city]". For example, "I'm looking for a transmission shop in Reno". And it's the truth. I'm looking for a [type of business] in [city] to work with. I also usually offer them something for free in the body of the email.

Can you share some examples of ones that you have used?

These are good tips... I'm having the same issues.

I think using "Re" works well

I agree about "sucks" - usually works and also "fail" - lol

    Use of their name/their domain

"Dead" - as in "dead" email address, "dead" landing page was an always-open for me

Ummm i'll post more as I discover them

  • " Hi (their name), I had an idea that will help your business...(active idea / verb here)
(nothing you can't make happen like make a million this month or anything like that - no BS - if you do it once, you may not get the second chance)
    - or -
    Just about anything but,

I am Prince (think of silly name) of Nigeria...I am seeking your help...

Or the classic - "your long lost uncle John (your last name here) died and left 2 Trillion dollars unclaimed...I am a banker who has no idea how to funnel this large sum of money out of a country to anywhere and I thought you could help me...

and the list goes on...

do people really buy this stuff?

You won't fail to grab your prospects attention if you mention a competitor they are aware of.

On that basis, I would be suprised if they didn't open an email with the following subject. Lets assume competition name is ABC Ltd

"ABC Ltd are at the top of Google, let me explain why..."

You have got their attention, now you need to keep it!

    How about this one:

"Your Website Has Been Banned by Google"

This is sure to get some attention.

Then you would continue to explain that this would suck to have this happen to your website and you are offering ways to avoid this etc. or whatever your offer is.
