I have a local firm to promote, but as they are based in a small market town in the UK , would it be better to target a city where there is traffic for there niche, Mick.

    I think you've left a lot untold my friend.

    If you have a local firm to promote, did they pay you already?

    Are you targeting them by building a website and then approaching them for their business?

    Give some more details. I would think that if they have already hired you, they would tell you what they wanted. Then you could adjust their plan based on what you know to be the best strategy.

      Hi, No they havent paid me already, got a meeting this week with them, just looking and because there is no traffic for the local town thought would it be better to advise if we should go for a local city, 120 miles away as travel is not a problem

          wow... that's a lot of gas, you will need solid plan to pull this off. In fact, I even may suggest that the company seals deals over the phone before going to the customer for agreement or contract signing which will be worth it for their gas.

          Main thing here is you need to open up to the company about the situation and let them chose how they want it, I guess that would work better

    If a company has to travel to them, they better be getting the job. That is a lot of gas to be wasting. What kind of company is it, and how many people are there locally who need that particular service?

    Where in the UK are you based, I can't think of a single place that is 120 miles away from the nearest city!

    Employment law is not as tough a niche as you think unless you get into the really big cities like London, Manchester etc.

    It is also a huge market right now with the current job market.

    It's difficult to advise you as there are a lot of details I don't know but I would focus on going where the potential customers are, places like Facebook, set up campaign around the immediate area, then widen it as the results dictate.

    Make sure they have some way of monitoring the calls and a 0800 number to make it easy for the potential client to contact them.

    Your client (think positive) would also need a hook, something like first 30 - 60 minutes free consultation.

    I would also set up a website and target the local area (also within 50 miles).

      I thought that, maybe he's in the Shetland Islands!

      Remember that sometimes it's down to client perception and you shouldn't try to second-guess them. They may be totally happy to be found for a really-micro niche term, even though it has no searches.

      You may have to prove that to them first, then suggest harder and wider terms. Unless they want to pay you to suggest some terms to them, in which case - fill yer boots.

        We are in North Yorkshire, 50 miles either way to newcastle/leeds, the 120 miles comes from Manchester, as there is a bit of traffic for "employment law manchester", but Leeds is our nearest city along with Newcastle, so would you target these areas first,or would you go for towns nearer like darlington,northallerton, these are only market towns though,Mick.

    What's a lot of traffic, Mick? Is it 5 searches, 50, 500, 5000? What's each new customer worth to them? Say you're in somewhere like Filey, for example, 10 searches a week would be good, I suppose. If each customer was worth £1000 over a two year period, then acquiring 20% of the clicks could be very worthwhile, possbily £50000 extra income for your client per annum. If there are low number of searches in your local market, that may mean you're not targetting the correct phrases. It may also mean that there's very little competition. Better to be a big fish in a small pond when it comes to local traffic.
