Have Online Marketers Killed Email?

Is it safe to say that online marketers have effectively killed email? Because I don't know about you, but I hate giving my email out to websites now, and I actually have a email setup just for stuff I don't want (aka my dummy email). And I know I am not the only one who does that. I am seeing a growing trend in people not willing to give up emails as much anymore. What do you guys think about this? Do you feel the same, or do you feel that this is a bunch of bs?

my opinion is that email, for me, is more used than ever. I recieve updates from google, apply for things online, recieve updates from forums and social networking sites, email is very helpful to me.

I also would disagree, because I have been using my emails for receiving updates for my online marketing, messages from my friends and information from Ebay and other online shops. I would say that Online Marketing didn't kill Email, and it won't probably be successful in killing email.

The thing is - the average person doesn't know that when they are asked to put their e-mail in they're necessarily going to be put on a list that is then marketed to.

Secondly - they still opted to enter their e-mail on a site they were somewhat interested in. Which means they may have some interest in the product still.

I put an assortment of people I had from various lists and put them on one list that had nothing to do with anything. And sent them wierd things just to work on open rates and that sort of thing. My open rate for this group was something like 10% - and I was offering them things they had never even seen before.

SPAMMERS are killing e-mail. These people who scrape e-mail lists with bots are the ones that are killing e-mail.

Tell that story to Groupon, they are the fastest growing company in History.

Their email list is how they communicate.

So yeah, I'm guessing that a company that started 3 years ago that is worth $30 Billion USD all by email marketing is probably liking email.

In my humble opinion, I've noticed that the internet savvy crowds tend to have a personal email (used for opt-in products/services/etc- typically maintained and opting out when necessary) as well as a 'dummy email' used to sign up for those "spammy" type messages on websites, forums, offers, etc. where an email address is required. I wouldn't say that email marketers have killed the space, but I would certainly agree that users are being more strategic about what they're receiving, where its delivered, and how it's relevant to them. Keep in mind, there's a whole world of people who don't spend their time in the affiliate world. lol

You're somebody who knows about marketing and the Internet, most people out there know nothing and will happily enter their email adress on a website, so no Email isn't dead.

I do agree that the "savvier" internet users have a second email address for entering it into a lot of forms where they get newsletters and other "junk" mail, and have their personal address for important emails.

I have 4 email addresses - my "unwanted email" address, my personal email, my work email, and my .edu email address from college

Certainly don't think that Online Marketers have killed email though!

      • I would be surprised at anyone not having a junk address in IM...I just get tired of the amount! I mean, some of these guys spam several times a day!

Some send every day! (got TELLMAN anyone? "SHABAMBO" :rolleyes He should just compile it in a book...

I probably know should the answer to this...but wanted other thoughts...
Why do some people write words that aren't really the word? like Fr.ee or m0ney? does it escape some search tool? Or is it just a form of dishonest disclaimer?
(ie: I never claimed it was "free" - it was "fr.ee"...)

I mean with these tags they always get the quick boot from my mail...

      • I agree the amount of spam makes it really hard for legitimate email to cut through the barkers...

I have so many e-mails it's funny. Personally I think e-mails are doing fine. I still get a ton of e-mails and such. I have e-mails for personal, business and fun.

Ok, I see what you guys are saying, and I am not saying that email itself is dead. I am just starting to notice people are very hesitant to give out emails more now days (I used to work at the Gap and people HATE giving out emails), and if they do give it out, most have a separate dummy account. I know not all people do this, but it is a growing trend I am noticing. The average person has about 3 emails today.

nope Email is still strong. A lot of updates and invites from email are still effective...and even a lot of big companies are still making more money through sending emails...

Basically we will be getting these kind of emails only when we subscribe to any service provider. But i feel that these service providers are giving their email data base to other advertisers.
