Google changed results to 20 per page

I made an SEO contract for a client and I told them I would rank them top 10 first page in 3-4 weeks.

It is 6 days and I did rank them first page but Google totally messed with the results, throwing in 7 local places in the middle. So the site is 12th from the top as Google is showing 20 on the first page even when set at 10 results per page.

So is it 12? Is it 5? Is it top 10? Is it first page?

I have been telling clients I will get them to first page in 3-4 weeks and if they don't get there they don't pay. So far so good and they love the suspense (and the possibility of not paying I guess)

I do charge for the on-site work so I never lose but I leave the big money on the table as I know I can deliver.

Give me your opinions and what would you tell the client?
She is extremely happy so far I just want to call in the contract for payment and want some good counter arguements just in case.

I know I can escrow.

give it some more time, if your links are of high quality, your rankings will bounce back on top

    all the best

Well it seems to me if your client doesn't want to pay then they are within the terms of the contract as you presented it. Going forward I'd say be a bit more specific with your T's and C's. Now if they are happy and they pay, well that's good.

Thanks for the responses. I still have weeks before I call in and say hey cut me the check.

The SERPS are still moving like crazy and I did get them plenty of top 10's some #1's and 2's and 3's. It is just Google thats acting up, but even there the site jumped 80+ positions.

Next time I will be super careful with how I word my contract but I'm still likely to fulfill it.

First off don't promise something that you have no control over. Yes you can do on page and off page optimization like a pro, but remember you don't control the listings in Google. Google does. I have used the same methods to land large clients in competitive niches. Terms and conditions in your contract have to be precise and clear i.e. how long to get them on the first page, how long they will stay there, position etc. If this is not done you will lose money. Just my two cents.

what I would do, if you know you can deliver it in 3-4 weeks. Make it in the T&C double that. 6-8 weeks. But word it to them that you are sure you can cut that time in half for them. So if you do, you look good and if something like this happens again you got double the time.

The only other option is try to get rid of that from the T&C's.

it is really tricky to give a definite timeframe it is best that you based it on the results which is from the sales of your clients or the number of visitors that come in to the client's site.
