Loved being part of this forum - only been a few short weeks - lots of people to share ideas with. So here comes some love.....

My primary business is a B2B telemarketing company and I have found myself commenting on various threads relating to cold calling which sparked some debate in office....does the old dog still have it or does he just talk a good game? So fellow offliners - here is the gig.

I will this Friday work for one warrior's offline business I will call from 9.30am-4.30pm to show my staff I can still walk the walk and give you guys some proof of what can be achieved!

Any warrior who wants/needs appointments - post here or get in touch - can only select one - this should be a good case study for us all and should put a few quid in someones pocket. I'm pumped !

I'm not going to ask for myself, but I just saw a post from a guy that is trying to get his first client.

    View Profile: navarr

That is their profile name. Maybe you can contact and give him/her a hand?

Id be making my staff prove to "me" that "they " could walk the walk. I dont pay them so I can prove points to "them".

    Lol.

But Good luck on your challenge. Look forward to seeing how it pans out. Its kinda like a magician picking out a random person from the audience to prove a point.

Look forward to that Russ, but I must objectively disagree, even though there is really no right or wrong to this honestly. I had a guy I had promoted to supervisor, and one day the room was slow, I looked up and he was sitting on the phone... and the room was still slow... I said "what are you doing"? He said he was supporting moral to show the troops that he would get in the trenches, and looked at me as if to say; "If you were a noble leader you would do the same"... and I looked at him and said "So, your answer to being $5,000 behind is to get on the phone and show people that you are a telemarketer capable of raising $200 per hour"?

He should have been walking the floor being a leader... So I took over the floor and raised the 5k that hour.

On the other hand, I do understand Barry as I have taken challenges like this before just to entertain the room, but it wasnt a requirement to prove anything to them. Just fun.
        {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[4342108].message }}
        • Profile picture of the author Rus Sells
No that would not be the answer to bring the room up to the quota, however...

          Generally...
Leaders should be able to demonstrate mastery of the skills they do require from those they lead.

Please include me in the lottery. I know cold-calling works, but it literally makes me physically ill every time I sit down at the phone to do it. I have no problem answering inbound calls and seeing people face-to-face, but cold-calling causes such great anxiety that I vomit almost just from thinking of doing it.

        Hi Barry

I run a company called Smart Ad Solutions, we are based just outside London and we specialise in direct response websites for small businesses, especially those at the high end of the beauty/cosmetic surgery industry (high end hairdressers/laser lipo/botox etc).

We offer to get them on Page 1 of Google, set up email list and as a show of good faith (if they are a tough nut to crack) produce and optimise a promo video at a very reduced rate.

Most of our clients come from referrals and I have had some success with email but none whatsoever with cold calling.

        Hope this helps.

        Cheers

      Evening Barry

I also think you should use the fellow called navarr as a test as he is not actually asking you. (If you know what I mean)

His thread is called 'Still trying to get that very first client' somewhere on page 1.

      Why not make his day?

I agree, otherwise it could take away credibility from the point.

Still its great for your room, just doesnt make a strong point on the WF.

Heck, Pick ME. I will let you set some appointments!

Or if you really want to make a strong point I will let you do it on a tmf dialer. Cant argue with that.

In fact we can even record it and give you more credibility.

        • I wondered if I could play unsolicited "devil's advocate", (or barrister) for a moment on this Gentleman's behalf -

Barry has made a very generous offer of his talent and time, and though he has not yet chosen to whom he will throw down the gauntlet - I think there are some things we should consider on his behalf for this test -

          1. He is in the UK, and to call another time zone (PDT for instance) would be not only an inconvenience to him, but since he is also using this as an example to his staff, a late hour call session may not give his staff the training he planned for. Unless he has a 24hr call center, He would be preaching to empty pews...

          2. While the demographics could be somewhat similar, if he is calling another geographical area other than the UK, he is facing a possible language barrier. Even in the US...
As many telemarketers can attest, a dialect can work for you - or against you. As someone who used to make cold calls all around the US, I know each area has unique characteristics. I have a good ear for dialects, and was adept at adapting to the region I was calling by subtly mirroring the caller. My partners in the call center tried this and failed miserably - they often sounded like they were mocking the caller, and gave up trying. If done right, it can work. If done wrong, it would kill any call. I can only imagine what would happen in the UK if I tried this - given the number of different dialects there, and because of the relative closer proximity to each other, I don't know how it would play. Fortunately, the UK has a "generic" version of "BBC English", and the US has "radio voice" that seems to cover most folks -and works great for you if you have it - "distinctly ambiguous" - but it's not "local".
But being this is a "local" business call - I don't know how "Buddy at The Catfish Cove" in Georgia is going to cater a call from "Scotty" ...meaning, a call to Georgia,or Texas, goes a little different than one to New York City, or Oregon, - or Glasgow, or London...?
( Barry, I'm not poking fun at Scots (I am one!), or you personally at all, you obviously have a talented way of speaking, or you would not be where you are today - you could probably sell ice makers to Inuits... i'm just trying to make a point.) You're a Scot, so I hope you'll get where I'm coming from. Scots generally have a distinctive brogue, and unless you sound like Sean Connery... - some folks in the US may not be as receptive to it, or even understand it, than they would the voice that sounds like it came from down the block? The same would go for a Yank calling Yorkshire, or an Aussie to Alabama -It's not your dialect - it's any different dialect. That would be the general case wherever you are in the world - people are receptive to people who "speak their language". It's about being in your relative domain - your comfort zone. It holds true whether you're in Scotland or Scottsdale.
Of course, to argue against my own points, a distinctly colorful dialect could be an advantage
in the right circumstances. Because it's unique, it could be seen as a novelty if clearly understood.

          3. The candidate for the trial should probably a least be in the same time zone or close to it, unless Barry has no problem with any time frame, and is welcoming to any and all challenges

I hope this wasn't wasting anyone's time - and I just seemingly wrote myself out of the competition -

Best of luck to Barry and the chosen recipient - I look forward to reading about the outcome -

Note: These are only my opinions and may not apply to anyone else,
and in today's global economy, I might just be talking out of my....hat.
I welcome all comments to these observations.

(and I approved this ad  )

I just thought we should give this gentleman a fair playing field?

          Best of Success,

Man, who hasn't had at least some experience with cold calls, but this is a good thread. I always love to ask people what is one take-away from your expertise that is short and sweet. Mine for cold calls would be leverage for sure - its your number one tool. You never want to ask for someones business, etc. Always flip a situation so that they are asking questions, giving information and talking.

I hope you'll share the experiment and maybe some recordings with us (both bad and successful).

I am struggling for some time to get my vey own first client for my custom mobile website design service but haven't got anything yet.

Maybe you'll chose someone who will promote mobile websites who knows, the subject it's very popular.

Unfortunately i'm in Romania, and i want to target businesses in countries like US/UK/CA/AU.I tried in here too but business are not that internet open minded yet, they don't need that for the moment and the payoff would be way bigger in states or other country than mine .
Obviously i can't meet the owners.I have to do it over the phone(us toll free), email or skype.
Beside your experiment, if you have any idea for just let me know.

OK folks - looked at PM's etc Neil and MJ hopefully can do something moving forward.
Navaar it turns out was based in U.S and for reasons explained above issue was one of practicality.

Marc at seo-servives.org.uk has a strong offer (which I think always helps )
No point calling and saying we are the best the biggest the brightest etc. People want to know what is in this conversation for them ( 30 seconds to say who you are what you do and why it is compelling proposition)

Interestingly, this would be dialling to confirm interest in using service with Marc closing the deal on follow up call. Looking at PMs this method seems of most interest to warriors. So we will see if we can make it work.

The measure will be how many will agree to have teLe-seminar with Marc with a view to signing up on month to month basis.

Will as far as possible record calls but will edit out client details.

rather an untargetted market though, the whole of the UK?

Its like a shoe sales place saying their target market is everyone with feet

haha anyway all the best for you

The one thing I get from this thread since I know I wont get the gig is that you call form 9:30-4:00. That's how long I can expect to work when I start cold calling so thanks for that tip. I know it will take more work than a hour and calling a few people. I need to look at this like full-time job and put in full time hours for this work. So thanks

Great offer Barry; i am sure what you are doing is going to help someone just getting started. If you spend 7 hours on the phone you deserve all the success you get.

Folks very busy and will post more fully later - as explained above day has some what overtaken me but here is where we are.

Think this proves right message, intense activity and strong offer will pull you results.

Data supplied was estate agents ( tough cynical crowd ) good example because these guys are no pushovers and have strong gatekeepers etc.

    Activity 9.45am - 12.15am
So...two and half hours dialling - 76 calls - 23 live conversations (got through to prospect) -
    Results
Four want to talk/meet with a view to trying this service and have booked time to do this.
Five want outline emailed to them with follow up call next week.

So we have four very strong prospects and another five who are also keen to engage. See where it all goes next week.

Will put full skinny on approach to this - sorry cannot put recordings online (data protection) but will have conversation transcribed so you can read through it.

If there are any questions on this, post them and I will reply when laying out full outline later.

    Cheers
    Barry

I am cold calling as I read this forum and I would say the most effective method is connecting with the gate keeper. You must sound like the boyfriend they always wanted. Reason being they will then give you the gateway to the $. I have been doing it for years. Call schedule call back don't beg for the business but explain how you can create a win win situation. Then, when given the chance over deliver.

BlackJayBorn, you live on another planet mate!! I thought what you said may have some merit so I made a few cold calls and made sure I came across as ' the boyfriend they always wanted'. I never got put through to right person once. They never agreed to cook me dinner / wash my clothes or do the ironing.!! One of the guy gate-keepers even said he was going to punch me

Black Jay Not sure i'm the boyfriend anyone wants!!
. Think we all have our own approach but fundamentally always the same - strong offer, concise message , simple commitment question combined with absolute intensity of focus.
IE I think it is easy for people to think they have dialled hard all day but on reflection maybe their ten minute coffee break was actually half hour long. Maybe they dawdled on facebook etc - simple rule call 100 people a day and you will succeed

    Hi all
Just a quick follow up from Friday.
The list that client wanted targeted was estate agents. Tough crowd – little cynical but a profession that really do need SEO/IM services
Some of the data was a little dated but first thing to be taken from this is that it really helps to have good data and preferably a contact name.
Before dialling this thought it might be worth finding out a little about this market and in particular trying to establish pain points – areas that the people in the industry were unhappy about.
After browsing around a few property and estate agents forums came across one called estate agent today. www.estateagenttoday.co.uk

A half hour spent browsing this was worthwhile – clearly house sales have fallen dramatically and industry is wringing its hands a bit. One of the major issues I picked up on was the building hatred of Rightmove. – For anyone unfamiliar – rightmove.co.uk is the go to place if you are looking to buy a home in the UK – by far and away the biggest portal for home sales in UK.
Rightmove make their money by charging estate agents to advertise their properties – the site is so heavily used that estate agents are almost obligated to showcase properties on this. Rightmove are aware of this and even in a falling market have consistently raised their rates – much to the ongoing and collective disgust of the esate agent community – who feel the are being squeezed.
    PERFECT !!
So, decided to build a pitch around SEO services – improving site ranking and driving traffic – without the need to use Righmove as heavily.
Marc has a good offer – which from a telemarketing perspective I really like – first month free no contract. It really allows a sense of risk reversal from client perspective and differentiates from other propositions. The requirement was not to set up appointment – but arrange a tele-appointment for Marc to call back and explain/sell service.

Calls as follows full transcript of call below – me speaking in bold
    Call – ref 80-3—00922—recorded
    Date 29/07/2011
    Time 11:09:12
Call made – ext 8838 (boardroom #1) Auto dialler on/ off - off
Barry heard singing to self !! -
    Hello XYX Estate agents
Hello can I speak with David XXX
Certainly may I ask who is calling
Yes, it’s Barry at SEO Services
    Sorry
It’s Barry – over at SEO services
Can I ask what your call is about ?
Sure – I was speaking to couple of estate agents in the area, need to catch up with David. Is he in right now ? ( All true and you have to remain in control of the call – do not start pitching the receptionist – but also be respectful, answer question and ask again for client, repeat do not start telling reception the reason for your call – if receptionists could communicate your ideas as effectively you as you could - then you should hire them)
    One moment
    Hello David XX speaking
David, hi – it’s Barry over at SEO services here – just a quick call – I had been speaking with a number of estate agents about getting new listings and buyers. Which seemed to be of interest
(Bit of social proof – if someone called me about what other call centres were doing I would listen – just to find out what rival was or might be doing)
Yes have we spoken before ?
Not that I recall David, but their feedback had been that they felt too reliant on Rightmove.
Uh-huh we spend a bit with them
Not sure if you know what we do – but we work within a number of professions including estate agency getting them in to top positions within Google – making them most visible estate agent in their area and driving new business to them. (Simple this is who we are, this is what we do, this is benefit to you offer )
What we would be keen to David is work with you for a month free of charge let you see what we can do for you and build a relationship from there – if we can help you find new business I know you would work with us long term – wouldn’t you? ( Get minor commitment )

Yes. So what are you saying – you can get me first page of Google for the term estate agents?
We can – but with a more geographic specific term – no point in you being listed estate agents London if you are based in Glasgow
    No of course not
What I would normally do David is get Marc to give you a call – Marc sets up process and can consult with you about the terms that will bring you most opportunity. He isn’t about right now, but I could get him to give you a call, would Monday or Tuesday be OK ? Are you around either morning? (Give alternatives – do not say can I we call you next week – this invites a yes or no – make the decision Monday or Tuesday )
Yes – hang on, Tuesday would be better
Tuesday – if I can get Marc to call you between 10am and 11am – would that be OK ?
    Yes that’s perfect
OK – I’ll diary that now David – so speak Tuesday ?
    Great stuff
OK will do that – have a good weekend
    You too
    Bye now David
    Bye
    Call ends

Only thing that with a bit more preparation between Marc and I is I would have ended by agreeing call back appointment and then emailing confirmation of the same to client. When calling back a few days later, the risk is client forgets or cannot remember detail of call. Email confirmation cements it in his mind.

Anyway hope that is of some value to warriors following this.

of our data at www.prospectreach.com - will allow you to search region/industry and will provide name and contact details of relevant person.

    Hey, Barry,
How did it all work out? And do you have a like-associate here in the US?

We are developing a non-profit around a huge (and little known--yet hightly impactful) problem that is only getting larger which will include getting local businesses and professionals as members.

Even the local police detectives we tell about our plans for businesses tell us something like, "I could walk out this door and sell 15 out of 20 businesses on this..." And the surprise is they are serious!

Anyone know a 'Barry' in the US who would like to test our concept for an eventrual piece of the action nationwide?
