Are You New to Offline - a Few Thoughts

I just read this on the forum
I know that for the vast majority of marketing consultants the biggest issue is client acquisition for their own business ... kind of ironic really!
ironic? sure - pathetic? maybe!

Made me think - if you can't use your internet skills to get clients them perhaps you should consider doing something else - seriously.

Oh you may say -
but these local businesses are not aware of what the internet can do for them/ use the internet to find services etc
guess what? - the bigest objection you are going to get re: your services is my potential customers are not looking on ..........
if you can't solve that one for your own business then I hope you have a magic wand .....
It really is a mute point .... for a few reasons
It helps to understand the 80/20 prinicple to be succesful in business
ie 20% of clients will bring 80% of your proffits
and conversly 80% of your time can be taken up by earing 20% of your income
- clients who need to be educated are "cold" - take up a lot of your time and are hesitant to spend.(Not always - but mostly)
(and probably just getting by in their business because they don't understand/value marketing and don't want to spend money on it)
The 20% ??? these are succesful, will do the research and are prepared to spend money on selective marketing that they know wil bring a good ROI -
These are the hot clients.
and guess what? They simply hang up on idiots phoning 'em up with the lame "I'll get you on first page of google" (even if you manage to get 'em on the phone).
For ther most part these people will use services that are recommended or who come up via research - ummm thats right via the net.... and if your not ranking on the net .........

Of course all businesses have to put a big effort into ininitial marketing and there are many businesses in the middle - but if it is a struggle, you have to ask: Is this the way to the IM lifestyle? or am I just creating a job for myself where everyday is filled with dozens of tasks that have to be done so I can get a paycheck to pay the rent?

now where was that adsense/microniche/amazon site thread ??

Wow, I was just talking to somebody about this. However, instead of Internet skills, I would say sales skills.

If you don't like selling, this is the wrong business for you. Actually, any business you start yourself is the wrong business for you, as that's essentially what it all boils down to.

To Danny's point, if you can't sell your own services, how are you going to help a business (which you know even less about) make more sales and more money so they can see a return on their investment?

Once you understand fundamental marketing principles and can show anybody how to use them to sell their own product or service, then you have a real skill people will pay for because it makes them money.

I couldn't agree more. One of my marketing mentors says that being in the convincing business sucks. The power of direct response marketing is finding people who are already in the market for what you have to offer, then using your superior product/service and marketing/sales skills to win the business.
