  • I think this is an absolutely GREAT idea! I, for one, have bought one of these cards before, and have typically forgot about it - making sure the business in question (auto repair) didn't lose any money.

Want to take it up a notch?

Get an agreement with a local school - high school. Get in good with the principal - I have one that I am VERY good with the leadership in. Go in, and get them to sell this card for $25 each - and then, for everyone they sell, give $15 to the school, and keep $10.

Want to make it even more fun? Give a price to the top seller - say - like an Ipad 2. It may cost $500 (really, not sure of the costs) but, if you have a high school with 1,000 teenagers in it, and get 30% really fired up about selling it - and they each sell an average of 5 each (some will sell more, some will sell less) - that's 1500 sales - with $15,000 going into YOUR pocket, and $22,500 to the school! Wowee (as Don Alm - Midasman09) would say!)

I got 2 hopping high schools - one in the "poor" area, and one in the nicer area - that I think would be GREAT at this!

You just paid off my wife's student loans!

  • Will auto repair service stations REALLY offer to do these services for FREE for that many people?

If a repair shop has a $10 cost in every oil change for 500 people, that's a whooping $5,000 in cost that they'll have to incur. In their minds, $5,000 could get them radio spots, tv ads, newspaper ads w/coupons, etc because their minds are already geared toward that type of advertising.

AND, you want them to agree to up to 20 different services, right? If so, that's a BIG commitment for an auto repair shop to make.

I like your idea, but I'm a little hard pressed to think that an auto repair shop would be willing to put out that kind of money, even though you tell them that what you do will cost them nothing.

All it takes is one savvy auto repair shop to run the numbers and turn you down. Better yet, an excited repair shop starts to like the traffic UNTIL he realizes the amount of money he's giving away on an oil change or whatever.

I'm not knocking the idea. I think it's a great idea. So if I've misunderstood you, please say so.

    Enlighten me...

    • Well,

      Here's a few thoughts.

First of all, not everyone of those cards get redeemed. In fact, I'd say less than half - probably WAY less - get redeemed. The sale is up to the ability of the sales person, not so much for the benefit.

Secondly - most good auto repair owners would probably love this - because, seriously - what was the last time you went to a good, auto repair place and NOT hear that you had to have new (brakes, tires, struts, motor mounts, etc.) My truck - has 382,000 miles, and I just an oil change this past week. Now, this place knows me, and it's a big chain, so, their fancy computer system probably tells them I won't buy anyway, but, the first time I took my truck there, they came back with an recommended $3,600 worth of repairs. Now - there is NO WAY I'd do that on my truck, as much as I love it, I just kept driving it, and 10,000+ miles later, I probably still "need" those repairs.

Thirdly - providing free services promote good will.

How does Frank Kern say it? (I don't use that kind of language, so, I'll tone it down a bit.)

      1. Give away something cool.
      2. Sell them something cool.
      3. Get them excited so they can buy something cooler.

    • Rich,

I hope that I, Jeremy and others who have posted here have answerd your questions and helped you with your conserns and that you now have a better understanding of how and why the auto discount cards works and how they can be very profitable to both the auto repair shop and the person selling the discount cards.

      All the best,

      Martin
  • Martin,
Have you actually implemented this? If so, what were your personal results?

  • Hi Martin,

Great post, thanks for sharing it with us.

Since it would be pretty easy for someone to make copies to take advantage of the shop owner, do you do anything to the cards that's between you and the owner, so they can verify it's a real card and not a "counterfeit"? I came up with stamping (unique stamp that would be hard to get a hold of) each card with invisible ink (shop can just hold them under a small black light to check) as most people who are thinking about duplicating it would not know the stamp is on there, but not sure if that would work as the ink may wear off, or deactivate.

    Have a great day,
    Chris

    • Great Idea another thing you could do with the card is.... Use it like Level up does on a card. For say any of the advertisers if they don't want to give away free. They could put say 3 coupons of their own on the card and have the first one for 10% off a specific service, next time they get that service they get 20% off third time 30 or $40 off. Now this brings them back over and over to SAME place. Plus like said above I'm sure the service place may find "extra repairs". Just an added idea to the program. Great job to all that have done and will do this. The service place could either stamp or punch out every time card is used. Ashley

    • Chris Virtue,

I havn't had any issues with people trying to duplicate my pizza discount cards.

My pizza discount cards are printed on high quality 16 pt. card stock, full color, double sided and uv coated, so it's not like anyone could just use a home printed and make copies that easy.

I keep things simple with my pizza discount cards and worry and fix issues as they arise, but like i said i have been doing pizza discount cards for over 3 years now and have yet to have any issues with counterfit cards.

      Thanks,

      Martin
  • That's a good idea. Now that we're 2 weeks in, now may be a good time to do that.

  • Martin,

I have a question that you addressed previously, but, it's one that has come up, particularly in pre-screening my appointment with the school system.

How do we 100% guarantee the car repair place WILL honor these agreements? Now, I KNOW they will, but, the question will come up: What if they don't honor it? Who will the holders of the card complain to? Who will be liable?

    Jeremy
    • [1] reply
    • Jeremy,

You will have an contract/agreeemet signed with the auto repair place that they will honor the cards and if they don't they are 100% responsable for covering the cost of whatever the cards cost to get printed and any other costs that relate to you deal.

The signed agreement is what 99% of the time makes it so you will have no issues with the repair shop backing out, as they know if you take them to court, they signed a agreement and they won't win.

So, when asked how do we know that the auto repair shop will honor the cards, just say and show then the signed agreement/contract you have will them and tell them eveything is legally binding, so they have to honor the cards.

I would suggest on the bottom of your card on the front or back in small text write something like:

      Complaints? (585) 000-0000

      or

      Questions? (585) 000-0000

and this will give card holders a contact number to call you if they have a complaint or question.

I hope this answers your question and helps,

      Good luck,

      Martin

  • Does anyone know of anyone who has scaled this up? I don't see why you couldn't make this into a business in a larger city and have reps out doing the foot work.
    • [1] reply
    • jphilips,

Yes, you can scale the auto discount card idea up just like i did with my pizza discount card business and use sales reps, etc. (see signature below). There are many ways you could sell discount cards and twist the idea to make it better and more profitable.

      To your success,

      Martin
