Videos on mobile sites question

I'm working on providing property listing videos (property-specific commercials, actually) that will be available online. These will be geared mostly for mobile viewing.

My question is: How well does video play on mobile pages, and is there an optimum format I should use when embedding the vids on these pages? Should the measurements of the video meet certain parameters to be best viewable?

Any input on this is greatly appreciated.

  • I do youtube videos as they work on all devises and I get that little extra nudge from google. Once the house is sold you can then use that as well.

    • If you guys are talking about embedding Youtube videos on a site then no, they do not work across all devices. They do not work on the Blackberry browser I sue and considering Blackberry still has a rather large market share, this is something that would concern me.

      You will be hard pressed to find one video format that will work across all popular devices.
  • @WillR: I think Blackberry has updated or something, because I've been able to watch some YouTube vids on mine recently. They've skipped pretty badly so there are probably some glitches left to work out.

  • I asked this question in the thread referred to by Jay, but wanted to copy it here not only to open the question to more people, but also to allow more folks to see the answers.

    3gp works on Apple and Android phones. So what works best on Blackberry? (I use a Blackberry myself, so the answer is particularly interesting to me.)

    I have only just started testing this weekend on a real blackberry handset - looking into both youtube and 3gp it appears it depends on how you embed the videos whether or not it will work properly or not.

    I think i mentioned in a different thread about using user agent detection to conditionally render different code for different phones/browsers - this really takes it out of the realm of basic mobile web development to a more intermediate/advanced level.

    I have been using 3GP video format however on the blackberry although it will work you cant use the same embed method as what you use for android and iphone. Same thing applies to youtube.

    Am still researching the best solution at the blackberry developer forum but will post my findings when i find something that works.

    @ideafool - where the youtube videos you watching embedded into a mobile website or where they actually on youtube?
