Hey all I live in California and we all know that the laws on pot pretty sweet here. I was out getting Jamba Juice with the fams and picked up Sac new a review section and noticed there was a big QR code on the back for hemp club. My question at the time was, did another IM'er sell that, why couldnt I do it. I'm just curious, is anyone here in Cali having success with the cannabis clubs? I know for fact they could use our services.

Well, I am sure you can make a bit of money here, but why get involved in something that is still illegal. You can slice and dice the medical pot issues all you want but it is still illegal no matter what anyone says. Do you really need to do this? And worse, if there is a change of parties in the White House don't be surprised to see more of a crackdown on this.

Me, I don't care. But there is still an active war on drugs and you don't want to get dragged into it I'll bet. Some upside, lots of downside and not just financial!

      Red,

Actually it is legal on a state level in the states that have made it so, and the feds are clearly overstepping their legal authority by imposing their law upon the states. The feds know this or "every single" medical marijuana shop would long be out of business.

Rus is right, but that doesn't stop the feds, but blillard I would go for it. You won't get caught up in it at all unless of course you traded your work for product. If that was the case there would not be any attorneys in Cali.

I wouldn't worry too much about it being illegal, it is legal in california and isn't changing anytime soon, aside from getting more legal. When evaluating any business as a candidate, the most important things to focus on are the Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) and competition.

In the case of dispensaries, they have both a high CLV (the amount of money a customer spends over their lifetime as a customer) and competition, i.e. other dispensaries competing for their business and how hard it is to distinguish themselves. So they are ideal targets for marketing and you also may be able to fill the gap of ad firms with mentalities like redlegrich, who will avoid them.

In my opinion, they are a prime niche to go for because the businesses are not going to be run by clueless old guys. They are likely ran by innovative and younger people who will immediately be open to and understand the value of a mobile website and/or text message marketing and having a quality website, etc.

My recommendation is to go for it and see, and I would hope you would post back your results. Good luck!

Thanks for the advise, I was just curious. I mean they are still a business that could use online services. I'm not sure how that would have any personal effect on me since all I'm doing is building a site for them. Maybe it has more to do with personal morals more than the fact it's illegal.

Thanks for uplifting support everyone. I see a goldmind here due to the fact that they'll make what they spend on my services the minute I leave lol and might be too half baked when I approach them and just say yeah lets go for it lol. Thanks all.

There are more medical shops out here in LA than there are people who can legally go there lol. I would say go for it because they do literally zero marketing outside of flyers, and could probably benefit from it. But I don't really see a big marketing push/need in that sector right now, although that might change soon if they fully legalize it like they are hinting might do.

Gee Blillard - if you can come up with ways to motivate people who smoke a lot of pot - you could hold the "golden key"

All kidding aside though, I can see where an sms system to notify clients would be great for a "weed wal-mart" - I can see the points about feds, but you are only the medium - not the messenger as it were, and it is legal in several states. there is even a cannabis college in "Bezerkely"... even a warrior has a link - (see "digichik")

I don't see where it is any different than pharmacies competing against another - they do it all the time - and they could use SMS too...

IMO - medicinal pot is a huge niche that only magazines like "high times" used to take advantage of...and Cali is "budding" with buzz biz!

I will, I'll start contacting them this week. I am a medical patient myself so getting in the door is easy for me lol. Maybe I'll offer a competitor free service then go around to other shops and sya "Hey this shop is using my services, you should too lol" But a text message service would be Ideal, maybe mobile friendly sites since most of them are listed on weedmaps.com. I think only one had a mobile site that I know of.

I'd say sms texting, twitter, and a Fan page would be the perfect marketing plan for a dispensary.

PS: Yes their are medical marijuana fan pages on Facebook. = )

The real question is will they let you work for merchandise

In my ahem limited experience. People who run these places are very tech savvy. So be prepared to talk tech. It's likely they are too busy to do the im work themselves. Play the time saver angle.

      Brad,

Great point! Many owners are younger and a bit more tec savvy as you say, and being from a market segment that is not typical they do tend to like to barter. = )

Well I hope they don't try that with me since you'll need to join the club in order to get product from them I'll just opt not to join since it would be illegal at that point. I have been to many of the clubs and believe it or not they are almost like moms and pops run by families. Some are by younger crowds but they rarely stay open for a year due to that fact. My thing is how to go about doing it. Should I call them or walk in. A call would eliminate the barter talk, but might have less impact then in person. Unsure I am. Maybe an email would do.

Walk in and set yourself apart from every one else making phone calls.
