Google Places: Monthly Maintenance Required?

Hey everyone!

I'm hoping someone can shed a little light on this for me. I've done a lot of searches on the forum, but haven't found any answers.

I see a lot of people charging for setting up a google places page for local business - and they also charge a monthly maintenence fee.

Can anyone give me examples of what needs done on a monthly basis for a google places page? I was expecting it to be really just a one time setup - claim it, add photos etc, build a couple of backlinks.

Also, I'm curious as to whether you claim a google places page under your own google account, or set up a google account for the business?
If you set it up under your own account, can it be transferred to another google account if you/the client wants to end the relationship?

Thanks for the help!

Yes, you can easily charge a reoccuring fee (I usually put places maintenance under a larger umbrella of reoccuring services). Specific to places however, you can update coupons and offer, you can update the media on a regular basis, build citations etc (if, for example, you are providing service for a lawn care company, you feture text and services that stress mowing, hedging and planting in the spring and summer months and winterizing, mulching and landscape design services in the winter months).

For places, you will do a separate account on behalf of the owner. Wether you turn over the password to that account once it is set-up and operational is up to you, your client, how you have structured your services and your contract.

When I started some months back, I thought that I could offer a one time fee and gain my client's share of the marketplace. I found that in most cases monthly maintenance is required to really takeover a map. Monthly maintenance can be as simple as monitoring the business map ranking if they're located in an uncompetitive market or it can be extensive citation listings, backlinks, customer review acquisition and with Google ever changing shifts in importance, monitoring what's working and what's not.

I set up an account on my clients behalf, they own it, they monitor it, I control it.

    Nic: Thanks for the input.

The business I'm currently working with isn't a seasonal business - other than updating the places page to include seasonal keywords, what actual necessary work is there in maintaining it?

Thanks for clearing up the account issue

Starting to understand the tasks a bit more now.

Would anyone else have there experience with google places to share? I'm very interested in hearing what tasks people are doing every month to maintain the page.

    Thanks!
