What's the offer? What's your leaflet like? Where are you targeting? What's required of the people in order for you to make a sale?

So many variables, I don't think any conversion rates would actually mean anything to you...

    thanks guys
sorry for not providing more info.

the flyer will have a cpa offer to get a free iPad 2. it converts when the person enters an email and zip submit.

best place to have it is with tech magazines, but this costs a lot of money.
so i am thinking on hiring a company that distribute 20000 flyer for £450. this will be to houses.
i know that this is not targeted, but i am hoping that since everyone would like an ipad, this may convert.

    what do you think

i hear of people promoting the free ipPad stuff a million zany ways.
      Most of them pretty fishy.

This, to me any way, is very interesting. i've never done door hangers for anything.
      I have done Direct mail ( a lot )

So i am very interested in you results if you go through with this.

Keep us posted on you results.

Ive done mailing on and off for about 12 yrs.

the best converting thing for us ( EVER ) has always been a mini golf
magazine. which consisted of a few stories, couple ads and then
          a large full color catalog.

the funny thing is my girlfriend at the time bugged me about this idea
for prob a yr. would not get off my back, i don't like golf, think its boring,
therefore i was of the mindset it would not work. had a million reasons
why it would not work. including the cost factor, but she wore me down.

Finally to get her off my back, i said .. you set up everything up. you do the
schmoozing, you make the deals. when your ready, ill help out.

As she had no experience, i figured that was the end of that.

wow was i wrong, she tore into it like a frigging angry pit bull.

Turned out i was wrong wrong wrong. The concept worked exceedingly well.

so well we had offers to buy us out about 4 , maybe 5 yrs into it.
          which we did.

I have done mail for web design work , leads , software systems ( like payroll )
a ton of other stuff with varying degrees of success and failure.
i even tried a seo mailer. that bombed ... really bombed.

yes, the free ipad offer looks fishy most of the time, that is why i thought maybe offline will give it a bit more credibility, or maybe if it comes in a magazine or something.

but have to try it and see.
    will post back

Door hangers can get a great response for local businesses. It will be interesting to see what the CPA gets for you.
If you're doing direct mail and hangers, I recommend that you review some of the Dan Kennedy -Bill Glazer materials. A great resource for direct response copy and layout.

What is your commission when the recipient submits email and zip?

Conversion with flyers is typically going to be very low. Let's say you get 1%.

So for every 100 flyers, you get one commission.

How much does it cost you for printing and delivering 100 flyers?

the commission is $1.4 for each email/zip submit.
printing and distributing 100 flyer is $20.

so you think only 1% will convert?
hmmm.. that is only $1.4 for $20 spent. not good

i think i will try it anyway, i am ready to loose $20 to see how it works

Yeah, it's unlikely you'll ever have high enough conversion on a buck-forty.

One thing you could try is to find someone you know who has a copier. Get some florescent yellow paper and print/copy your flyers in black toner. You should be able to get flyers for five cents each that way.

Then deliver them yourself if you can.

But even then, you'd need 4% conversion just to break even.

Sounds like a waste of time.

Try to find something with a higher ticket. A buck-forty ain't going to get you far.

          Hi Ken,

i even tried a seo mailer. that bombed ... really bombed. "

I am planning to do direct mail for web design work and seo.
Could you share with me your experience?
What is the most important on the flyer to convert the best?
Is it better to mail residential addresses or business addresses?
          What is the conversion rate?
What design of the flyier you have used?
What offer was working best for you?

          Anything else I should know?

Thank you very much for your help.

Many of the companies that do flyer drop offs are not reliable. Perhaps better to hire people directly on Craigslist. Either way you have to monitor carefully and make sure that no one puts them in or on mailboxes where the postmen will remove them and the advertiser will get a nasty call from their supervisor.
Be very careful about paying up front with flyer delivery businesses.

    Thank you rhinocl.

It is good to know that.
I don't think it applies in UK as most houses have the hole in doors and anyone can post anything.

You might want to try a higher paying offer...something like lovefilm free movie trial...you get a payout of over $20 per free trial sign up...

So even with a low 1% conversion...on 1000 leaflets which is 10 sign ups at $20 = $200...not bad at all.

And then you can test the leaflet designs on future drops to increase the conversion rate.

      hope that helps.

I'd have to agree with Ish.

you want a MUCH higher paying offer.. in fact, as high as possible.

1% or 2% is still achieveable, but it will probably occur whether its a $1 payout or a $25 payout.....I would first try to do a smaller distribution run (less costly for you) as a test, and see what numbers you end up pulling.

Most new marketers end up vastly over-estimating how well their mailing/flyers/postcards will pull. you need to be very conservative in your forecasts initially.

How do you sign up with Lovefilm CPA? I've never done any CPA stuff so I'm clueless there....but I'm thinking this might work with a local pizza shop. I know the owner and could possibly work out a deal that they put my flyer on his pizza boxes.

Spin it as "Watch a movie while you eat your pizza" or something like that.

If you go to offervault.com and look for lovefilm offers (UK) or Netflix (US) and sign up to those networks that have these offers.

Of course make sure you tell your Affiliate manager that you plan to promote it offline...

The pizza shop idea sounds good...give it a try!

You might be better off going with a payday loan or pay per call offer. A $1.40 cpa is going to lose money really fast with direct marketing, printing costs, etc. In CJ there are some really good short term loan offers that pay $90-100 when someone takes a short term loan out, something like 100 day loans pays well.

What was the answer to this?

What is the conversion rate for this form of advertising?

Even at 1% in some cases in could be worthwhile.

Do you have a backend sale? Are you building a customer base or trying to make money off of a single sale?

Flyers, like any other method, can work really well or be a waste of money.

Profit more often than not is made off of the lifetime value of a customer not from a single sale.

There are tons of good books on the direct marketing two step.

Go through your plan - can it make money on a super low response rate or do you have a backend product you can then sell?

I market improv and acting classes and use posted flyers to market them. Most people take several classes - so students have been with us for years.

      This is for single sale.

Surely there must be some statistics to show how effective leaflets are.

      Such as 1% conversion rate?!

The problem is each flyer is different. You have the creative (copy and artwork), the actual offer, and the distribution area. So what would work for one distribution won't necessarily work for another.

The only way to know for certain is to test. In the long run you would be better offering something free so you can build your list.

    1) drive person to landing page
    2) give away product in exchange for contact info
    3) make offers to list on a continuing basis

If you spent time building a relationship with your list you would have a lower unsubscribe rate.

You can read any of the WSO programs that will describe the same process. Postcardmania also has some great resources available.

Joe Garcia's Give to Get System is also worth a look. I bought it when I first started out in having my own business. It was the single best purchase I've made in my venture in marketing - other than the Guerrilla Guide to Marketing.
