How do you know when you have the BEST keywords?

I've got Market Samari, Traffic Travis, and I use Google's Keyword tool. But I still am not confident I am discovering the best keywords. I thought I would ask for some Keyword Pros to "weigh in" on the subject.

How do you know when you have the BEST keyword list?
#best keyword tool #best keywords #keywords
  • A quick question before I give you my thoughts...

Are you talking about local keywords as in GP listings or any kind of offline marketing?

That a great question I should have addressed it in the original post. I use my keyword searches for Google Places clients, but I am interested in getting any kind of feedback when it comes to keyword searches

By what criteria would you determine the "best keywords"? Or are you looking for the very factors to figure this out?

Assuming you don't wish to present any potential keywords here, I would say the optimal keywords are the ones for which you can reasonably rank and make money, of course.

Those are good tools, as well. I always make sure to cross check any keywords in adwords.

Am I understanding you well enough? Please let me know.

Keywords dont work in Google Places because it uses "categories". You should use the categories Google suggests for you rather than keywords you think are relevant.

You should check out the Google Adwords Keyword Tool (just Google it!) It is a great tool to put in what keyword you think is good, but then it will give a ton of related suggestions and also show how many monthly searches there are.

One thing to remember on this, is that the standard is BROAD MATCH, which is not fully accurate on the number of monthly searches for that particular keyword because Broad Match means any search that contains those words. Be sure to check Exact Match on the left hand side.

From there, look for high search volume keywords because that will bring the most traffic to your client's site.

    I hope this helps!

Best way to find keywords for local businesses is to grab as many from google keyword tool, add them to an adwords campaign and let it run for a couple of weeks. Then check to see which keywords actually get impressions.

Then look at the competition for those keywords and they you have them.

use google webmaster first! find what users are using to find your site, it's listed in SEARCHES. These are the actual search terms people are using to click to your site. Next use the Market Samurai and other keyword tools to drill down on those terms and determine if they have real buying traffic. Use the keyword tools to come up with the long tail's etc.

Contrary to popular belief and hype of the most so called search engine marketers keyword research is more than finding a high traffic keyword. Knowing what the consumer is ACTUALLY entering into a search is the most important first step in finding the 'KEY" keywords and Google Webmaster is your friend for that. Next makesure the CONTENT has those keywords. It does no good to get ranked #1 if the keywords are pure crap for buyer traffic. Learn the consumers habits first, you are marketing to them, not the websiite owners ego.
