Question on the Google Places Red Icons

I've helped a photographer friend of mine reach number 1 position in Google places in his town! One thing I noticed when looking at the map on the right side of results page (and even next to the listings on the left too) is the lettered red icons (a,b,c etc) are mostly the upside down raindrop look. But some of the lettered ones are round. Can someone explain what the difference is? I'm not talking about the non-lettered results that are plastered all over the map, it's the ones with letters in them that I'm wondering about. Thanks

Those lettered icon just match the A thru J listings to the map on the right. On page one they have A thru J listings. Look at the locations on the map. They match.

Go to page two. It has A thru J listings. Look at the map on page two. If you compare page one A thru J and Page two A thru J the letters on the map show different locations.

It's just a way of relating the listing to the map on each page.

Yep, I realize that. My question is why some are shaped different that others. Like position "B" in this link

The round "ball" location marker indicates that the precise location has not been set. The other with the tip pointing down indicates the precise location.

OK thanks. Interesting that it would be in the second spot with no location set.

I've noticed that listings with a persons name in it seems to rank fairly well. I tested a WP multisite a while back and the subdomain with a persons name it ranked better than a non persons name. Maybe Google gives a little more authority to the persons name. Don't hold me to that, it's just a guess.

She can adjust that marker to be precise. I'm not sure if the would help her listing. Wouldn't hurt.

Yea I noticed the other day when doing a local search that there were some blue markers on the map. The only thing I could see relative to the blue marker was that that particular business was also advertising as well as having a google places listing.

Just to be clear, this listing is not the photographer I mentioned. He's in another city.
