As you can tell by my handle, I live in the great state of Alabama. There are 2 things we care about down here in Alabama. Football and crystal meth. HAHA

Seriously, football is KING in Alabama. The last 2 Heismans and the last 2 national champions came out of my great state. I have seen the pizza box marketing idea thrown around many times by Don and others on the forums. I just came up with a little idea. How about if I had the Alabama/Auburn schedule in the middle of the ad and the businesses around it. People would slap it up on the fridge just for the schedule. This would be a strong selling point when selling it to the business owners.

How many fliers do you suggest purchasing? What kind of expenses are we looking at? What would you suggest as the ad price?

This is a great idea-- in fact many companies already print football schedules on fridge magnets to advertise their own specific company.

The numbers of flyers you purchase will be dependent on what the reach of them will be. Will you be handing them out at football games? Placing them on cars in parking lots? Or what other ways will you be getting them into the hands of people who will put them on the fridge?

Expenses will be directly determined as to how many you print, but I would suggest that putting them on a magnet or something of higher quality paper than just a photocopy would be the way to go. More people will put it on their fridge that way.

As for ad prices, again, this depends on how many flyers/magnets you will be printing. I would charge between $100 and $500 depending on the size of the ad and what business you are promoting.

It seems that Pizza places and other restaurants would be good candidates since that is already associated with football. Other businesses like plumbers or maintenance people are good ones because people don't plan to call those guys, but when they need them, they need them ASAP and will go with the most convenient number they have-- meaning if a plumber's ad is on the fridge, it will get looked at!

I hope this helps and best of luck moving forward-- there is a lot of potential in this if you execute it correctly.

This is a great idea-- I see posters that utilize this idea for the local university near me. I think in that case the university goes out and gets the advertisers and then sells the posters at games.

I would charge somewhere in the range of $200-$400, higher maybe if you're a metro area. Prices are going to vary for expenses but I recommend a high quality paper stock (something close to cardstock), maybe even printing in color or with a glossy finish, it's less likely to be thrown out that way and more businesses will see it as a serious investment that isn't likely to be thrown out.

Ahh, that makes sense! In terms of printing out samples then, you just need a couple to start out with to show the pizza parlors a sample of what it will be. When you are getting them on board with the idea, ask how many pizzas they sell every day. You will then want to print out probably a week's worth of flyers-- 7 days multiplied by how many pizzas they sell a day.

Once you know how many flyers you will be using a week, you can use that number to price out how much you are going to charge the advertisers. Obviously at the minimum you would want to charge at least the cost of printing. Figure out how much space you have to sell and then divide up the minimum cost per space. Then increase the cost per space to make a margin and you're good to go!

      I hope this helps!

I've always wondered about how to charge for ideas like this. Don't magazines and newspapers--at least to a certain extent--charge based on circulation or impressions? How would you charge for pizza box-top flyer ads?

Let's say you were going to print 10,000 flyers (x2.0 "impressions" per flyer, ie more than one person usually eats a pizza). So 20,000 impressions. What kind of ad dollar can you get for 20,000 impressions of a small ad that's just one of many on an 8.5 x 11 flyer?

Design Sail you have a goood point. Avreez (I think that's his name) talks about CPA. If one of your ad spots was your own CPA offer you would know how good your advertising works. And if it did, I guess you could have all of your own offers. Then instead of selling to other businesses you would be building one - your own.
