Wordpress theme for business directory listing website?

There are a few threads going around that discuss creating a local business directory listing website, and then calling businesses and offering to do an interview and list their company for free on your website. I haven't seen anyone mention how they go about creating this directory site and I was just wondering if anyone knows of any good wordpress themes that would be good for this?

Thanks
Patrick

DirectoryPress (Directory Script for Wordpress - DirectoryPress) is a pretty good one that is easy to use and set up... I think a lot of other Offline Warriors use this. I don't do the directory site way to get leads, but I've heard it is a good way to get appointments.

It couldn't be any easier. All you need is a little Wordpress knowledge and you're well on your way. Some CSS knowledge would be good too.

For something like this, you have to think of Wordpress as a CMS (Content Management System) and not just a blogging system. If your Wordpress experience is in the realm of blogging, then you may find it a little cumbersome. BUT, if you know how to use Wordpress as a CMS, then it's all cake.

how are you making money from free listings?

I would imagine the directory is an add-on service to provide for a business that would need a website, or a Facebook page, or . . . ?

One more reason to go with you; since you don't charge for the directory listing, you've got Yellow Pages beat, etc., and depending on what the business already has, the business gets to put a video or some other info in the listing in the directory, maybe? (Of course, you could charge for making or helping to make the video and allow the directory posting to be free, etc.)

      Hi Quentin,
How did you manage to remove "ads" slug from custom post type.As you know classipress ads "ads" slug, you can change it but not remove.I want to build a business listings website via classipress as you did.

No offense but why would we pay a monthly fee when we can purchase a one time wordpress theme and never have to pay anything again?

I started this thread and I'll ask whatever questions I want. This is still related to building a directory website. Why would one choose to pay a monthly fee when there are other wordpress theme you could buy for a one time purchase? It's a simple and innocent question.

I have gone through this thread to see if I could find what I was looking for. I know this is a little of topic but I thought I would ask.

I am wanting to build a city site not just a directory but can't seem to find the right theme or software.

I have looked at Citymax and it would work but I just don't want to tied to someone else or have to pay monthly if I can help it.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

The Appthemes app is for classified ads. It's not really a Business Directory.

Thats true that the Classi Press is for classified's but really a business listing is talmost the same thing so a few tweaks and you've got a business listing site plus once you get going you can start charging.

A good Business Directory theme or plug-in should allow you to charge for listings as well. And it would be a true Directory, not a list of classified ads.

True - and I think Classi Press that Quintin is using will do this - geo targeting ie searching the site via post/zip codes and google maps integration are high on my list

      now there is one... GeoTheme

Sorry I'm new and can't link it, but you can find it at geotheme.com

I bought geoplaces in january and never really managed to go live with a site...

After a while I discovered about geotheme, which was supposed to be a debugged version of geoplace made by a Scottish guy who bought it and wasn't satisfied with Templatic support.

The guy in the end worked so much into it that over 95% of code has been rewritten, and being geoplaces released under GPL licence, he decided to sell it...

I bought it when it was in it's early bird release, a couple of months ago and I used it to develop the Italian Geo Directory of DataRecovery (recupero-dati-hard-disk.info), which is the niche I work for a lot and it took me roughly 2 hours.

It paid for itself the first day and I can only say it's awsome!

I likewise would love to have a clear winner in this race for some domains I want to develop. For me i want to import listings (free), allow upgrades ($) and curate some content and see what happens. I have been waiting to see AppThemes.com newest product "Vantage" which has gone live in the last few days.

I don't know about vantage, but directorypress is not mobile ready.

At this point, you would have to use a separate redirect plugin for mobile, which kinda defeats the purpose.

Why oh why can't more companies just make mobile responsive as standard??

It appears that the only theme that even discusses mobile is Geo Theme, but it is as an addon app that a smart phone user would have to download. It's not wordpress but edirectory.com has a great platform, but I need WP.

This is so frustrating. Anything now needs to be mobile friendly. Especially a directory website. I haven't seen a solution yet that can handle mobile.

Appthemes Vantage is on sale for this first week but it's still more than DirectoryPress with this coupon. These two seem to be the only choice for the other features I would like to see. Spent all day looking at the options and still not satisfied.

I use Headway to create my sites. One beautiful thing it does is allows you to select parts of the site that won't display on mobile - while being a mobile intuitive theme at the same time.

Anyway, with the actual "theme" out of the way, I can look for specific plugins to add what ever functionality I want.

What exactly is the list of features you are looking for?

Here's a review that goes over pretty much all of the themes out there except for Directory Press. Local Business Directory Themes - Geo Places vs Geo Theme vs City Guide vs Vantage | There is a Theme For That

Directory Press doesn't seem like it's quite up to par as far as local marketing. Vantage is more of a list and not as much of Yelp-type page. You can read the review and check for yourself though.

My advice, don't use a straight out of the box directory theme. The basic text listings, they are everywhere! Offer something different, offer something visual! Customers want images rather than text and simplicity!

I used the Simple Grid Responsive Theme for my directory, and it looks fresh, new, and stands out!

Check it out: www . the valley directory . ca (remove the spaces)

On the topic of directories - I have been involved in several directory sites. The most profitable ones were comprehensive in there listing of vendors in the directory but held a little back from the vendors to display unless the vendor was paying a fee. For instance you allow the vendors to add their information but you charge them to post coupons.

The users still can see all the vendors and contact them but the vendors that pay will have more ways to get clients such as coupons. there is more to it than this but I am sure you get the idea.

    I hope this helps,

    Airborne!

Directorypress has a few bad reviews, geoplaces is a total waste of time. That's my experience anyway. I've tried them all and ended up creating my own. But, i will say there is also GeoTheme, which is pretty good to be honest as it has great support. For out of the box mobile friendly and one that works inside Facebook aswell, you could always try my solution.

I build local business directories to get offline clients on board and it works great as a tactic.

Is there any update on a directory theme for wp. We are looking for the following.

    1. Ability to manage 1000's of listings through a spreadsheet.
    2. Must create unique pages for each business listing. Be able to create something like these as url's. dentists.com/best-priced-dentists-smiths-dental-practice-orlando-florida
    3. On each of the listings page we would like to have some text that we can change only the city name, example below.

For the best dental bridges in CITY, we have build this directory which lists all dentists in CITY. You can also see reviews from users who have left comments on CITY dental practises. Blah Blah Blah

So for a dentist in Orlando, CITY would be replaced with Orlando, and for Memphis the same.

We have looked at DirectoryPress and a couple of other but am a little worried by negative comments that appear on review sites.

We would pay for something custom designed if that was the only real solution.

    Thanks

    Nick

Great thanks for the heads up on this one. I have several Directory themes but I had not seen this one. Will check the features and compare it with the others I have.

I am launching my directory theme this month as well. And i am pretty sure will be better than anything its now on the market, integrating advanced geotaging with google maps and zip radius search.

The name of the theme is Buzzler. And will be located here: Buzzler - WordPress Business Directory Theme | SiteMile.com

Plus i will award a 20% discount to all warriors on this forum And i can even give the first 5 licenses for 75% discount. Either reply to this thread or by PM.

Will this be a responsive theme? Or will it have a mobile version that will automatically detect if it is a mobile phone?

      Thanks
