I Really Underestimated the Power of Referrals

I operate an offline marketing business which mainly offers SEO and PPC services to small, medium and large organisations. I've not been at it long, about 6 months in total and its only now that things are really picking up.

Why?

When I started out, (and mainly on the advice of some successful Warriors and threads) I did a load of free seminars, presentations and consulting. I built websites for people, I did free logos, free video creation - free anything. It got to a point where I was thinking why on earth are you doing this for free, you're not making money!! So I stopped and offered my services at regular price, picking up scraps of work here and there - enough to get by. Although, I'm lucky in that I built up a small affiliate empire before starting, to take any financial pressure off.

6 Months Later...

6 months on and I'm starting to get more and more referrals from the people I did freebies for months ago. It's unreal. Some of the referrals are from people I don't even know, they've just heard that I walk the walk. It seems that actually, once you do a dam good job for someone, free or not they will never forget you.

I've heard many people bang on about the power of referrals and how to build a referral network but, to be honest, I thought it was all hype. Nonsense from the people who say they work a 3 hour week satisfying 12 clients who pay them £2000 per month each per month - there's many of them about.

Well, I dont have that... But I do have 4 lovely clients - one pays me £199 per month to manage an Adwords campaign, 2 pay me £499 for SEO services and 1 pays me £99 for SEO services. I'll not be retiring just yet and I still make more from my other online stuff, but im getting there.
And all of my regular clients came from red hot referrals.

    Great thread!

Never underestimate the power of gaining trust from potential customers, it might mean doing something for free in the short term, but eventually your name gets around as someone who not only can walk the walk but actually caresd about helping businesses.... and the clients start coming in!

Also, presumably your referrals were from businesses that you hadn't done any freebie work for, but were passed your details by a business that you did do some freebie work for and impressed?

I'm already reaping some small benefits of giving away advice, sites, etc for free. A photographer friend of mine told a once Emmy nominated hair/makeup stylist about the mobile sites I'm doing. I have a phone meeting set up with him tomorrow night. Seems he's interested in getting a "regular" website too! Also, a plumber in another State who I did some jingle work for in the past, is now considering a mobile site, and called last night for some more jingle work.

Don't underestimate the POWER of FREE!

Congrats! I'm actually surprised as well on the power of referrals. They work online when advertising products but I didn't realize they had a lot of impact offline.

I guess spreading the word offline is just as important as online

The goal is branding yourself as an expert. Congratulations Red Mist!

I would be more reluctant to do something of value for free. There are loads of ungrateful mooches out there. It is good that you ran into people of substance who rewarded you for work well done.

It's what you do when no one is watching
that determines what you will be able to
    do when everyone is watching.

I was reviewing to book 'Duct Tape Marketing' last night. John Jansch tells the reader to make referrals an expectation for your new client going in. He said offer them a 20% refund for every client they refer to you. If they are connected, they could get their work done at a greatly reduced price. Not bad.

I think it should be a commandment in our minds when dealing with businesses. Must ask for referrals from everyone! Hey, if our work is good, the referrer is doing a favor to his friends by telling them about you. Everyone likes to say 'I've got a guy that does that'
