Hey offliners,

This is a great opportunity for me to help out a fantastic singer and help get the bands songs out there and build up a fanbase.

The band is still new however has already been on a couple of radio stations so far.

What are my options and your suggestions in getting lots of fans and spreading this bands music globally?

They have no website at all the online thing they have online are a couple of youtube videos and myspace page.

Help appreciated.

Get them up on REVERBNATION AIRPLAYDIRECT

What genre of music do they play?
If it's country, PM me a link to some songs. I co-host an international radio show that promotes independent country music.

A number of years ago, I managed some local bands and helped them grow. The only thing I could not manage was musicians and their personalities! LOL!

With the explosive growth of the Internet, things have changed considerably from when I was in the business. However, one strategy I had was to get the bands out of the US. (I'm not sure where you hail from, but if it's the US perhaps this will be helpful.) I had some contacts in Japan and the Netherlands who would play the music from these bands on local radio stations in their respective countries. It is far easier to be a successful band outside of the US than it is in the cutthroat industry here at home. A couple of the bands made VERY good money playing in Japan and then brought the money and their foundation of success back home.

I also made CDs for them and told them to just give them away at big outlets. For example, I got one band booked on the "Spring Break Circuit" which included Ft. Lauderdale, Daytona and Cocoa Beach. I told the band to give away those CDs so that the music would spread to all corners of the country as the college kids went back home. Their music caught on in some venues, and the band would have probably been successful had they stayed away from internal politics and drama.

One blues singer I helped went to the big motorcycle rally at Sturgis. Again, I advised her to give the CDs away. She was a hit, and as a result is still asked to play all over the country. She's been offered record deals, and in her youth opened for B.B. King, Drink Small and Jackie Wilson. At 70+ years old, she does not care to be a multi-millionairess, but wants to play because she loves it.

Too often, bands think a little too highly of themselves and want big money immediately upon forming. I'm still of the old school where paying your dues is the best route. Only on American Idol are people instant successes.

Create a Facebook Fanpage for the singer/band featuring a single, ask people to like the page to get access to more cuts.

Do a little FB ad and market directly to her demographic. Facebook would be awesome for this in getting fans that will like and follow the artist.

    Create a twitter account.
Create a Myspace page, Myspace is the new hot place for bands to promote themselves and get noticed.

Rus nailed it above-- get them on all social media-- facebook, twitter, myspace, and definitely YouTube as well.

Also, get their songs up on SoundCloud.com.

Another thing you could do is set them up with an SMS / Text Message service so that you can capture people who come to their shows and add them to a database to keep folks updated for future shows.

You could also create a really big QR Code to have on display at their shows. Have people scan the code to get downloads to their songs. Along those lines, QR Codes are really popular right now in the media, so contact all your local news stations and promote that fact that they are using QR Codes. If you contact 3 stations, at least 1 will show up-- guaranteed.

    I hope this helps!

      Ok Avanyx,

I don't have enough posts to pm you back so I'll post it here.

As promised...here are a few things you can offer.

How about offering them a way to play only sold out shows. You would offer them guaranteed crowds to play for.

Lets say the band wants to play at a location but isn't quite sure if it will sell out. Well using this service would let them know immediately if it's sold out. If it's not then the band doesn't play and the customers don't lose any money. What band just starting out wouldn't want to play in front of sold out shows all the time.

Here's an interesting idea for you to try out. Have the band put together about 15 or 20 songs that they would use for a 10 song digital album. Then have them let their fans put together their own versions of the album. You could create a site that would allow their followers to create their own album cover art as well. (use a drag and drop type feature) Their fans would pick out their favorite songs, put it in their customized album then register and pay for it. Then with that purchase they would also get a fan page where their friends can learn about and purchase their creation. The creator of the album would also earn a small piece of the sale as well. ( gotta take care of the fans)

Another really cool idea is when the band has a new single coming out you can have them create a usb data stick and load it with some photos, music and maybe some concert footage. Next, imbed the usb into something that can be easily passed on like a small toy. And put it on the website for purchasing of their new single

Want their music to reach young hip consumers? There's an app for that. This is a neat little way to have the band create a mobile app to engage their fans. Once their app is created it will appear in the app stores. Then after their fans have downloaded the app the band can share even more info with their fans.

Help them manage their careers. Not by you doing all the work but by you showing them how they can manage some of the aspects of their careers themselves.

Avanyx, these are just a few ideas to get you started. You of course can be looked at as a resource so that as their careers grow your services might be called on again.

The idea is simple. You become a seller of tools that they can use to build their careers.

When you can get into the position of helping enough people to get what they want, people will in turn help you get what you want.

Lastly, if you need more ideas on this topic or on any other topic then feel free to let me know.

          Well lets see...

What else could I come up with.

          Ahhh...got it.

How about making a video for the band using a novel idea.

          What's the idea you ask?

A multi angled video shoot using nothing but iphone 4's, itouches, ipads or any combination of these. You might even be able to get some local buzz from news outlets because how many video's are made for bands using ipad, iphones or itouches that look like they've been shot using expensive equipment.

If you can find 5 people with the iphone 4 then you can link them all up to create a video from multiple angles using the phones, ipads or itouches. One person serves as the director, while the other 4 phones take up different positions. They can make a mini movie, video, commercial for an upcoming gig or whatever you can come up with.

This little app give you some pretty good tools for creating a great video.

Hey you might even suggest that the band hold a contest to have 4 loyal fans direct their next video. Have their fans send in reasons why they should be one of the directors. You know really make a big deal out of it. Select the winners. And for those who don't win, you now have a list of people who would be primed for your next idea. (Just my thoughts)

Avanyx as more ideas come to mind I'll post them.

Ideas are my bread and butter.

          Wait....

I just got the framework for another idea.

It involves finding a starving crowd (up and coming bands) and offering them something that they want.

Gotta sit down and write this out.

For some strange reason I'm getting a lot of ideas in this area.

          Whoops...

          Here is a quickie.

Qr code branded T-shirts. This will give you a chance to design the QR code for them. (another service you can offer)

Tie it to one of the bands unreleased singles.

Put a big QR code on T-shirts and throw them out at the sold out gigs that they will be playing at because you used the website I mentioned in my previous post.

The code is scanned and they're taken to a site where they can register and get a unreleased track.

Also, don't just have it as a plain registration. People like to feel like they belong to something special so use that to create a special group. Remember how the greatful dead has fans called dead heads. Give their fans a title so that you can offer them other products down the line.

          Once again....ideas are coming.

But I'll have to grab the pen and pad now.
