Hey guys im looking for some help in the area of calling up local businesses, talking to the gatekeeper and getting the decision makers name so I can then send my info pack (direct mail) directly to the correct person. Im looking for some guidance with my script I haven't tried this yet just wanted to get some critique before I start making the calls.

Script: Targeting Dentists

Hey kristy,

Excellent!

Hey Listen kristy im hoping that you can help me out with a problem....

im looking for the name of your clinic manager so I can send him an info pack
regarding a local advertising special that were currently running.

Thanks a bunch for your help kristy!

Have a great day.

I want to keep it short and sweet, in your experience do they give this info out easily, I dont need to talk to the dentist just need him to receive my pack with all of the info explaining everything!

Anyway any guidance would be very much appreciated.

  • This is what I have done to get the owners name. I search the internet.

It takes me about 1 hr to get the names of the owners/ decision makers of 15-25 businesses. Some are harder to find than others but its been relatively easy. It takes me that long because I record all information I find about the business in my spreadsheet. If I was looking for just the name it will take a lot less time.

I search using the business name, or telephone number. 95% of the time I get the infor I need.

    • I always recommend calling to confirm the name you find online. Sometimes that info is obsolete.

Couple things: if you want the name of the dentist that owns the practice, why are you asking for "clinic manager"?

Also, never say, 'How are you doing?' This is a time waster. If you don't know them, you don't care how they're doing and they know it. (They don't really care how your day is going either). Just get to the point.

One opener that always works: "I wonder if you could help me?" (shut up and wait for response, which is usually, "Sure, how can I help?" People generally like to help others.)

Then say you want to send a package in the mail and you want to make sure you're sending it to the right person. Also, verify the spelling of all names. People LOVE to hear and see their names, and they like them to be pronounced and spelled correctly.

  • Another great place to find business owners' names is the Secretary of State website for the state you live in. Almost all of them have a business name search and you can tell who owns the business.

Then when you call up, just speak confidently and ask for the business owner by name. Not always, but most times, the person will pass you on because you sound like you already know the owner.

    • Bingo, Ben!

That's why I always say it's worth the extra time to get the name before you call. Instead of, "Hi, who's the owner there? Great, can I talk with him?"

      No!!!!!

  • So far, what I have managed to find online is current. Anyway I am in Toronto, so my method may not apply to where you live. Most of the businesses I am targetting are between 200 and 1M per annum and are mostly family establishments. It's not difficult to find their name online. Besides, I'm at work between 9-5, had to find something else that works for me.

Goodluck with whatever you choose and lets knwo how it goes.
  • Thanks for the insight guys really appreciated, does anyone else have a basic script that they follow?

    • Manta.com usually has the owner's name, but only if they have claimed their page. Doesn't hurt to try. But I'm glad I saw your thread because I'm about to mail a campaign out and forgot I needed to find the names of 2 business owners so thanks for this!! lol

If you are trying to find a Dentist, or anyone in the Healthcare Industry, simply use DRLists dot com, it is the same resource the Drug Dealers (Pharmacy Reps) use.

I would imagine a little research on the ADA dot org dot au website should get you what you need much of the time, especially if they have a serious practice.

I also wanted to add that we have found Chamber of Commerce directories (just stop by and pick one up) from all of the area Chambers very helpful (it doesn't hurt to join and become a part of the Chamber as well) and also, more and more cities, are publishing a .csv or excel file with every business licensed in the city.

I am as surprised as you are, but it is happening all over and you just have to do a little investigating to find.

    Ciao,
    Evie
