$400 A Month With A Simple Coupon Flyer

by MartinBuckley 19 replies
About 4 months ago a friend of mine who owns a busy meat market asked me to redesign his store flyer.

I asked him if I redisigned his flyer for FREE and paid to have 2,000 flyers printed, would he give me permission to sell coupon ads on the back of the flyer to other local businesses?

He surprisingly said sure go for it, so I went home and created a mock up of what the coupon side of the flyer would look like.

At the top of the flyer was the headline: Money $aving Coupons and below that was a sub-headline that said: Please Shop At and Support Local Area Businesses and below the headlines I created 10 biz card size coupons.

Now with the mock up created I went out to try and sell the coupon ad spots. I decided I wanted to make selling my coupon ad spots really easy and decided to offer them for a price that they can't say no to, only $50 each.

It took me only 6 hours total time to sell all 10 coupons ad spots and about another 2 hours to layout the coupons.

I made a deal with a local printer to get my 2,000 black and white flyers printed for $100 with the understanding that I would get all my future flyers printed by him.

So minus $100 for printing costs, leaves me with a profit of $400 for a total of only around 8 hours of work and one of the best parts of this idea is that I don't have to distribute any of the flyers, my friend will do this by placing the flyers in his customers bags.

I ended up getting my friend who owns the meat market to sign an agreement for one year allowing me to print his meat market flyer with coupon ads on the back.

Then what I did was get another friend of mine who is in sales to maintain this flyer business for me and I made a deal with him that he can keep $300 a month and I get $100 a month, for setting it up, so I'm getting paid $100 a month over and over and I'm not doing any work for it.

I just wanted to share this idea in hopes that it might help someone come up with there own simular way to make money with coupon flyers.

To your success,

Martin

Another twist (instead of having the meat market distribute all flyers) would be to have all of them help with the distribution. If you had 10 advertisers, non-competing, give 200 flyers to each to distribute. For each purchase, just stick one in the bag. Now you got 10 businesses promoting each other.

Take baby "stuff" for example (no, it is not my gig, lol). A clothing store, a diaper delivery, a furniture store, a baby stroller store, a toy store, you get the picture. All catering to babies but with different merchandise. Make the design "babyish" and there you go!

I would up the $50 ad cost though and print it in full color on quality paper. Say $65 for 1,000 flyers or $95 for 2,000. If it were me, I'd go for the $95 easily but that's me.

When they turn in the coupon, advise them to ask the customer from where they got the flyer. Tracking it that way, on a renewal of an up-coming new flyer, give them an even better deal for tracking (they would have to turn in all their coupons to you plus the tracking sheet).

      Just my thinking..... Eva

      xpesos,

Fiverr is fine for some things, but I find when it comes to getting flyer distributed Fiverr people seem to slack off with the flyers and or don't do it, so I suggest simple hire for $10-$15 a teenager you know to hand out your flyers and this way you can check his work before you pay him or her.

      All the best,

      Martin

        Martin,

Can you say how you would monitor or check someone's work? I know a few of my friends who own shops said they would be reluctant to buy a spot on a flyer or pay for any type of local distribution because there is no way to know if they are distributed. This is why they use print ads as they can see it in the newspaper.

I like that idea Martin about letting teens pass them out. Maybe on a college campus or even at football games...

Hmmm..maybe you could print up some flyers for the local Chamber of Commerce--maybe like a welcome flyer that has some local deals on the back that gets passed out to new visitors? Not sure how much traffic they have..but may work. You could put just chamber members on the flyers and maybe an agreement with the chamber that they are passed out at meetings, luncheons?

    Great idea, Martin!

There was a lady selling a course on putting flyers that contained coupons/ads from local businesses on top of pizza boxes.

The pizza restaurant owner gets his/her own coupons printed on the flyer for free and in exchange, he/she agrees to put each flyer on each of the pizza boxes.

    Hello MartinBuckley,

Appreciate your post and considering doing something similiar in my hometown. Wonder if I can apply a twist of my own to have a ring of 10 retail stores, hold about 500 flyers each and pass them out during the transaction or such. $100/ad minus printing, you're looking at about $800 profit for sure.

If anyone else has twists, looking forward to hearing them.

    Thanks again.
