Google Places - How do businesses gain customers?

How will businesses gain customers from a Google places optimized page? I'm asking this, because I'm trying to figure out how I can run some type of campaign to the customers benefit in conjunction with a claimed GP listing.

Currently, they don't have a website. So, I'm thinking of setting them up with an email promo, but I can't figure out how to bridge this with the GP listing.

Maybe put the places page in the email (for their contact info) until they make some $$ to pay me for a website?

Well if a business is optimized to show up for a certain search term on Google Places they would gain customers just from people searching for those terms and them showing up at or near the top of the results.

Example: I just did a search for "ice cream las vegas" and 4 of the first page results show up as Place Pages. Not sure if it would show up the same on your end, but just search for something local on Google and see how many Place pages pop up on the first page. Then note how many of those businesses don't have their own website, just a link to the Place Page.

I'm not sure if I totally understand the second part of your question, but hopefully that helped you with the first part.

I hope I understand your question. Google created websites for every business they could find. Over 90% of these businesses have not verified their business. These unverified sites would show up at the top of the search engines. The top listings get the most customers. So right now, the person who verifies and optimizes wins the most searches and more clients. Hope this helps.

Sorry. I asked my question all wrong, so let me provide more details.

In this scenario, you only make the Google Places page. That's it. You optimize on-page only (meaning you have geotargeted pics, all info filled in, etc.). You do no off-page, sitations, backlinks, etc.

I'm trying figure out how they would make money from this google places page.

    Thanks
