OK....for those of you who know about the "AweSome Marketing Power" of QR Codes.....this....should "Twiddle-Yer-Twaddle".

A few yrs ago when Coffee went from 20 cents a cup to $3...with all the Foo-Foo added....coffee shops and coffee Kiosks and Stands appeared on the scene (ala StarBucks)

As I got "hooked" into the "1-Shot O dis an 2 Shots O dat"....I noticed that ALMOST EVERY cup o coffee had a "Sleeve" around it to...supposedly to protect fingers from the hot brew.

Then...I noticed ADS started appearing on these Sleeves.

So....I got one of my "Hot Flashes" about placing LOCAL business ads ON the sleeves. I found a supplier who could print Ads on these sleeves. Got his prices and...made up a Sample and...proceeded to go out an SHOW a Car Dealer....a Realtor....an Insurance Co....a House Painter....a Roofer...a Builder....a Landscaper....and a few other businesses that would like to have THEIR business seen by...people who were paying 3bux for a cup of coffee!

These "3 buck a cup" people are (still are)....a GREAT...TARGET MARKET!"

And....I found that businesses were willing to PAY....GOOD money to have an ad on those expensive cups of coffee.

So....I got the agreement for 4, Independent, Coffee providers to accept MY.... "Ad-Sleeves" ...totally FREE to them.

So....I printed up a bunch and got them out and....guess what? The OWNERS of the Coffee Kiosks and Stands (just 2 of them)...decided that... even though they agreed to accept MY Sleeves at NO Change... THEY thought THEY...should be the ones getting Paid by the advertisers and makin' all those EXTRA PROFITS!

So....the owners..."Cut Me Off"! So....I had better things to do and went off to some other Ad Programs.

SOOOO....UpDate to summer of 2011 when QR Codes are getting KNOWN by the "Public".

So....I went to a guy who owns 4 Popular Coffee Stands....showed him my idea of having QR CODES....ON...Coffee Sleeves....that would bring up INFO on the Mobile Phones of Coffee Drinkers.....which are almost 100% of the Coffee Drinkers......and I'd provide to him at no charge.

So...he thought this was a GREAT idea and SIGNED my "Agreement" where he was "Locked In" to my deal.

So....I then took my Samples to some potential advertisers....showed them how these New-Fangled Codes could bring up LOTS MORE INFO... ON the Mobile Phones of....FOO-FOO COFFEE DRINKERS!

And....they BOUGHT my program!

So....QR CODES ON COFFEE SLEEVES....will be a BIGGIE! And...
.....with THIS one....I'd like to SHOW a Photo of what I'm talking about....IN THE SPIRIT OF OFFERING POSSIBLE "INSPIRATION" to others, again....showing how....with just a Sample Mock-Up and the gumption to go SEE people....you can "Hit The Motherlode".

Thanks for reading,

        I enjoy "working" on my pc and...getting "Promotion ideas"....BUT....where I REALLY get my "stuff" is...from...."Real Life"!

        As an example, with this one; I'm sitting in my favorite Coffee Shop sipping my usual THREE BUCK Foo-Foo....with a buddy and....he gets a call on his Mobile...then another....then another.

        So...while he's on the phone....I'm looking around and happen to notice that almost EVERYONE in there....HAS A MOBILE THING....IN THEIR HAND!

        So....being the "Highly observant" person I am....I see TWO things;

        1) Most EVERYONE has a Mobile
        2) ALL those in that coffee shop are spending MORE than a buck for their coffee

        So....putting 2 and 2 together....I think...."Holy Moley! These people drinking expensive coffee with one hand and...their other hand has a Mobile in it....then it hits me;

        I Focus in on the "CardBoard Sleeve" that's around their cups!....BLANK!

        WHOA THERE NELLY! What if there was a QRCode on the Sleeves that these expensive coffee drinkers could SCAN in and;
        ...See the latest models Cars
        ...Get a discount Coupon from a Restaurant...or other
        ...Get an Auto Insurance Quote
        ...See an ad for an Attorney, Plumber, Roofer, Accountant, House Painter etc

        So...I ran back to my office, made a few calls....found out my old supplier can put Codes on the Sleeves....made up a couple Sample and...went out and showed some prospective clients.

        So....such is the "life" of an "Idea-Guy"....ALWAYS looking....ALWAYS interested in WHAT is going on around him.

        Thanks for reading,

        Haha, Don's ideas out number mine!!

        QR Codes on coffee sleeves is a GREAT idea! Another add on to it would be to set up a payment method where the person who scans the code can have the option to order the coffee beans that the coffee was made from and then have it sent to their house.

        Not sure how all small coffee shops would respond to this because it would involve setting up a mail order business, but I'm sure there's one or two out there that would love it!

          Or maybe it could link to a mobile "cup o' coffee club" - (hava java)
          each cup adds up = "Green Beans" for discounted coffee...

          Or a "Secret Woid" of the day sent by sms - when they come in for that day, customers show them the "woid" - everybody could get it, or it could be random...for % off

    OK now this post is why I love this forum and you even toned it down but got a little out of hand at the end. lol

    This is a great idea! I do want to know if you tested the scans on the concave surface though? Did different phones have better success or worse success and completing a scan?

    I'm not MR. QR code expert by any means but I do remember reading that the surface must be relatively flat. No?

    The ad positioning is GOLDEN though because the consumer is actually holding the ad in their hands! LOL

    How small can you make a QR code? That may be the secret if there is surface distortion. Then you use the rest of the space for the pitch.

      that is brilliant. I told my brother who is kind of my IM partner and crime about QR codes and we have been rambling off ideas, this one though s brilliant. I live in a small downtown area that has like 6 coffee shops within a 30 sec walk from each other. This could be an interesting venture.

    I love this idea but I'm still waiting to see if they work consistently on curved surfaces, If codes can't be scanned consistenly its a waste of time, effort and money

    PS: Just found this and it seems one should not just plow ahead and start putting QR codes on curved surfaces without know a thing or too.

    http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Has-a...763.S.54953363

    Caution and testing are warranted before you ask business to start spending money for QR codes as AD space on curved surfaces, you'd better know what your doing graphics wise. I know as a business owner I'd be pissed if I paid for something like this and found that it didn't work out well and only a small percentage of ad viewers would be the only ones able to successfully scan the code.

          Hmmm... Concaved surfaces...

          So make the 1" square piece that punches INTO the coffee holder, and give them only that.. or build the 'new and improved' coffee sleeve version to accommodate this curve...

          Right? More positive surface to grip with... Right?

        ....and different readers also.

        I've had QR Codes that could be scanned perfectly fine by some readers and NOT by others (and the scanning was using the exact same code from the exact same device...just a different reader).

          Well, it kind of starting to feel obvious that no matter you do, with a perfect set of skills to match, there will be a margin of errors. If anyone has any kind of info in regards to extensive testing, like an article or something, that would be helpful.

          If you simply could explain to the purchaser of a "qr ad" that x% will NOT be able to scan the code, include that in your sales agreement and you should be fine, right?

          "out of 10,000 printed qr codes on coffee sleeves, x% might not scan correctly, IF the potential device is not compatible".

          So, 2% (200 for ex.) would not scan but 9,800 would. Does not seem like a big deal as long as you make them aware. However, if the percentage was way higher, yes, there might be a problem. Input anyone?

    Midasman,

    My girlfriend and I are fans of Cracked (.com), and this morning I read an article that I couldn't help but laugh at. What's even more entertaining is how every thread you start is a perfect example of one specific picture in the article.

    The article is "If the Internet Took Over Our Schools", and the 19'th of 20 pictures is a digital Yearbook smothered in advertisements. Check it out at If The Internet Took Over Our Schools Slideshow | Cracked.com (Hopefully that brings you to the right picture)

    The 'Ads on Coffee Sleeves' is a great idea. Sadly, there are few non-corporatised coffee shops in my area, and the only one that is close is run by a man that is closed-minded towards outside advice (Even when things are explained and proof is shown).

    I greatly enjoy your ideas that help out the local area, not just a single business. Your "School Football Ads" and "Have Schools Sell Keeper Cards" were amazing, and I plan on using them to help my local economy, schools, and charities.

    If anyone here is a Warrior, it's you Midas. Keep tossing out those great ideas.

      Regarding the margin of error for QR readers: this is still the wild west. Some apps are pretty sketchy. Others work great. But over the next several months things will become more and more standardized. The QR format itself is pretty robust, as the 4 black squares' placement enables the application to figure out the correct orientation of the image from a broad range of angles.

      However, if you present a QR code in conjunction with an SMS call to action, you will cover the greatest number of scenarios.

      Example: I saw an ad this morning for a Beck's Beer contest while waiting for the subway. There is a poster that gets you curious and a call to action to enter/learn more by texting BECKS to their shortcode, or for smartphone users, scan this code. When I scanned it, I got "smsto:[shortcode]:BECKSQR". Incidentally, the 2 keywords (BECKS and BECKSQR) is a great way to segment your list so you can craft your campaigns to match your audience (tech savvy/a little less tech savvy).

    Taking your sleeve idea in a little different direction if you're not getting local advertisers direct the QR code to CPA offers. Talk with the vendors at colleges and direct the QR codes (and some printing on the sleeve) for student (spring) vacations, student loan offers... hehe coaching on how to make money online while your're in school... find out whether at high/college games they use sleeve or offer them anyway... with this route you could even 'donate' a portion of the proceeds to the schools (football teams) fundraising.

    Another thought is to check with printers that offer promotional merchandise that carry the insulated can/bottle holders.... they would be given away at trade shows or events... football games one side school logo the other side a local biz or a link to your site that rotates offers that would get them to keep coming back to check.

    One of the things I tried out years ago was printing ads for local businesses on place-mats in local restaurants, I've also seen at least one company that hires local salesmen to pitch custom tables and counter tops for restaurants, with ads and even actual business cards embeded in the table it's self.

    There was another thread on Beer Coasters for bars.

    even QR code coupons at the checkout counters

    All great ideas...

      I "cut my Sales Teeth" on Placemats....MANY moons ago...down in a little town in Colorado (Glenwood Springs, CO) I had picked up some placemats from restaurants in Denver....and when I moved to Glenwood I was in a popular "Locals" restaurant and got a Hot Flash;

      Why don't I go get the Mats from my car and ask the owner if he'd let me provide these for him at no charge.

      Surprise...surprise....he said, "OK! Let's do it!"

      So...as with a LOT of the Sales Programs I've started over the years....I started this one the same way...."Get The OK, FIRST!...then worry about how to FulFill it."

      My "Motto" has always been, "See if it will sell...first!" I've know many people who spent oodles of time and money with their "Pet Project"...then, when they're "ready to market it"....BANGO! They discover it won't sell...or...it won't sell at the price they want, etc.

      Here lately I've done "Pizza Box Flyers" in many small towns. These are full color, Glossy Sheets that are stuck onto pizza boxes and handed to pizza buyers.

      They have an ad for the pizza place in the center and ads around the edges (same as placemats)

      So....here's the question; "Why Not Place QR Codes ON these Placemats and Pizza Box Flyers?

      So.... I laid out a Sample Pizza Box Flyer with larger ads and with QR Codes on it (pizza buyers could Scan the Code (or text) to get uptodate Coupons for re-orders.

      The Pizza guy LOVED it. So....I had one of my sales guys see if he could do 2 things;
      1) Sell less ads
      2) For more money per ad

      And....a "Hit!"

    This is a great idea, and with a little testing I would think it would work great. Don is right, chances are good that virtually everyone buying a $3 cup of coffee has a smart phone on them that will scan a QR code. Won't be very long whereby every phone will have the app already installed.

    My question is: where is a good source to get these printed? Would a local print shop be able to do this, or is there an online source that anyone knows about?

In Australian Supermarkets, after you have done all your shopping and checking out, you recieve your docket. I have seen just 2 independent coffee houses using a "stamp card" system on their coffee sleeves. This is a rubber stamp impression on the sleeve with 10 small lines with the numbers 1-10 on it. The customer keeps the sleeve and brings it back to the business each time coffee is purchased. After the purchase, the employee signs one of the lines. After all 10 have been signed, the customer gets the next coffee free. I suggested that the customer keep the sleeve in his/her automobile right on the stick shift. That way, the customer sees it frequently and thinks, "Now would be a great time for a cup of coffee". I pitched this idea to my local indie coffee house. They loved it and I get free coffee!

        Food for thought

          One guy I "helped" put this together has connected the QR Code on the Sleeve to a "Mobile Directory" where, instead of just going to one sponsor it goes to Many....who want to reach people who spend 3 Bux for a cup of "Java".

          And....the greater percentage of these "$3 a cup" coffee drinkers....have SmartPhones....which cost them a pretty penny every month...for a Minimum of 2 years!

          So.....this "Niche" market ($3/cup coffee drinkers) are a great Target Market and....there are MANY businesses willing to pay to reach this Market.

          Plus....when you set up a "Directory" you DON'T have to bother with "Re-Directs" or "bothering" the Advertiser's WebMaster. You just grab an apropo Domain for your Directory.

          www.TopekaMobileDirectory.com

          AND....for extra "Service" to sponsors....you can provide each one with their own Mobile Link off your Main Directory by using SUB-Domains.

          www.TheGap.TopekaMobileDirectory.com or www.VictoriasSecret.TopekaMobileDirectory.com ...etc

          I really like that idea instead of a punch card. It makes it more unique. Are you charging for the sleeves?

        Docket is just the sales slip you get when you purchase, lists what you just bought, and has coupons on the back.

        P.S. We don't speak English, we speak "Strine" e.g. "rise up lides", being thin steel wifers, usually used for shiving.

    Thanks for the image of the sleeve on the coffee cup. My imagination is "still" right now, but it helped to get a perception of the idea in action. Maybe i should drink more coffee and come up with marketing intuitions like this. Thanks!

    It's a good idea, mainly because they target thousands of people, and this people usually aren't cheap since they don't chose to do their own coffee at home for .05$ a cup, so you don't target just random people who may be broke or just cheap, like you may do with direct mail or flyers.

      Hi Don

      Well you did it again with your latest idea.

      I am halfway through my latest guide which is about QR Codes and in my section about new places I have thought of for using QR Codes it does not have this latest idea of yours which makes it pretty unique.

      Well done.

      Hm time I had a coffee I guess.

      Don't assume because they buy $3 coffee they have money. I know lots of poor people who do anad the better off people I know would never think of doing anything that stupid with their money.

      Of course most people including those you market to are going to think they do so sell that to sell the ads.

      Any "advertiser" that wants to reach "Affluent" potential customers, clients or patients...... will find them with their Ad on coffee sleeves because;

      "Affluent"
      1) They're willing to pay 3bux for a cup
      and...
      2) They're paying a Monthly Fee (for TWO YEARS) of an average of 50bux a month

      People who are struggling to "make it" do NOT buy SmartPhones or $3 coffees!
