any ideas on how I can help someone get more business for an upstart photography studio that does high school senior portraits?

The obvious answer would be to approach local schools and become affiliated with them somehow. Whether it's offering discounts or some type of incentive, even closing one school could be a big payday for them.

If all they do is senior portraits it's hard because you have such a small niche. IF they do weddings than it's easy you get in with wedding planners, wedding shops, etc. Senior portraits are best off going to the school like its been mentioned here.

One way to get a guaranteed good publicity is doing team photos for free maybe?

I've been putting together referral ideas for local business and this is how I think I would approach this one:

Early in the year, before kids are getting their portraits done, have the seniors bring in their BFFs (also seniors of course) to do a group shot. Offer a free large print for everyone who participates in the shot, which will develop good will with the kids and gets your studio's name out there. It's also viral marketing for a relatively low cost to the studio (but a high perceived value, since a professional 11x14 print would normally cost a decent chunk of cash), since kids will love to get photographed with their friends and will show others the pictures, who will then go and get it done as well. Done right, you could easily get half the school coming out for free group portraits. Get ready for some crazy days.

When the photographs are printed and you're ready to send them out, put in a gift certificate to do their senior portraits for a good price. Then, once the photos are in their hands for a few days, send out thank you cards.

You might also offer cash or a discount for every new customer they refer.

The other thing you might consider is running a Living Social or some other group buying site deal to do a basic package for XX% discount. If you go this route, do your homework, because a business can get burned with these deals if they don't structure it correctly. It should be considered a loss leader that you can turn into upsells and referrals. Neil V. on this forum has an excellent course detailing exactly how to pull this off... Make sure you go with a daily deal site that allows you to set terms such as caps on number of packages sold and limit the deal to only the most basic package, since your studio is new and presumably could not handle 1000+ orders coming in at once, especially at a steep discount.

Once you have them on the basic package, you can almost always upsell them to get more prints or do a few more poses.

How about a mobile campaign? Advertise in the high school newspaper. Teenagers LOVE to text, perhaps you can send out deals and extra discounts if they fwd the message to their friends.

decent idea but really teenagers are broke and unlikely they care about photography...their parents on the other hand yes. But they arent in high schools.

Check Studio 314 on facebook. My friend was one of the founders of that and they really have great marketing. And they do it all. You may get some good ideas from them.

Have them build case studies of their previous or future work. Run direct mail or cold call high schools in the area about their services. Make sure you get in touch with the person at the school who is responsible for portrait taking. Advertise locally in the newspapers, and build a website showcasing their work. On the website, showcase their work, and include a contact form on the site so that they can capture leads of high schools who could use their services.

I recently went to an event sponsored by the local chamber of commerce that took place at a private high school.

I got to meet the principal, the guy in charge of talking to past students (trying to convince them to fork over some dollars), the guy who's charged with putting up events and additional 'learning experiences.' One of the people I'm acquainted with and who was present was a video/photographer. I introduced him to the guy who's looking for 'learning experiences,' and the video/photographer got a meeting with him a few days later and talked him into letting him showing interested students about how you turn your passion for photography into a business.

But, I think, the best bet would have been for him to talk to the guy in charge of talking to former students (a lot of them sent their kids to the same school) and talk that guy into offering free portrait of the student if the donation is $x, portrait of the student and a family portrait if the donation is $x+n. Where the school would pay the photographer a lesser than typical amount due to high volume.

Perhaps the photographer could hook up with florists close to high-schools. At least around high-school dances. And tuxedo rental places.
