Great prospecting tool or waste of money?

Yesterday I couriered out 9 large mindmaps like this to some big target prospects:

I sent out 9 packages altogether (mindmap and letter) - I like the rolls better but the supply store only had 6...

I'll keep you posted on what happens - these clients will be $50K/year or more so well worth it if I land one.

Is this your first approach to these $50k prospects?

If so, make sure you follow up with at least two more similar dimensional mailings.

Like you say, just one client will pay for all your prospecting for the next several years!

No, it's not my first Rodeo as they say

I haven't tried this mindmap approach before though..

Another thing Dan K sez, "enter the conversation they already have in their mind". This should work as long as your prospects know what a mindmap is and how to read it. That's the form (mindmap). Then there's substance (what the mindmap is talking about, which I can't see on the photo).

I closed a nice account some 3 yrs ago with a mindmap but the guy was kinda geeky to begin with.

Wish you success with this guerrilla marketing approach and please do remember to come back and share the results, good, bad, or anything in between.

      Hi Alex,

The mindmap is easy to read for sure - it is just printed large to make an impression. The crowd I am targeting is geeky enough so I hope that it will make a splash.

Thanks for the well wishes and I'll definitely share my results..

Interested to see the results in this..

If you don't mind my asking, what was your total cost per piece (printing, postage, etc)?

Man, they look really cool and I sent another today for a total of 10 and spent around $200 total. You could do it cheaper and get smaller rolls and printing or cheap out on mailing etc. We'll see what happens. $20 each is nothing to sneeze at but if I get 1 client out of it it will be way worth it.

That's pretty epic Ty! Can you put those on blueprint style paper and give them that engineered look?

Twould be cool to have had a QR code printed on there to take them to a video presentation or message.

I want to know how this goes for you too. Its not every day a company gets rolls of paper, I'm sure they'll be instantly interested and un-roll them quickly. = ) I know I would! Its Christmas!!!

Hey Russ - good idea on the blueprint paper - this is the same paper they use actually but I could make it look much more like a blue print.

I'd have to test the QR code - it's a great idea but I am sending this to law firms - not sure if they'd go for the QR code or not.

I'll report back for sure - so far; no response.

Find a way to work using QR codes into the mind map, then have a QR code that will give an example. If any one in the office has a smart phone they'll make sure to find that person and scan it right there on the spot to see what its all about. Use the QR code landing page to dazzle them!

Interesting concept, i'd like to know how this turns out too. I've heard that term before but never looked it up. Now seems like a good time to do so.

Neat Idea- what is it a mindmap of however? Is this their website, Internet Marketing, or something else...

It's a mindmap of the different marketing 'modules' I would implement for the particular niche. I circle the one I think is the lowest hanging fruit for them with a red marker - helps them focus I hope.

Great use of lumpy mail and I love the scale of these mindmaps. I use mindmaps too with my prospecting but I've never tried actually sending a HUGE one like that too a prospect. The packaging though certainly attracts attention.

Paul..the mindmap had a letter in with it - the initial call to action was to look at the circled area on the mindmap where I had some hand drawn notes about it being the low hanging fruit.

The letter went on to ask them to have their assistant call me to set up a 15 minute free consultation on the method that I circled.

Just wondering, did you already have an initial long conversation with the potential client? Did you do a needs analysis? The reason I ask is that you must have critical information about the specific company and their market and sales in order to do such an amazing mind map or plan. I am sure you already did, just wondering. Thanks for sharing.

Sorry for the delay on this thread...

I did end up getting one client out of this which isn't bad at all. I actually don't think it is going to work out long term but I do think the prospecting tool is valuable for your arsenal.

How much did it cost you to do this and how much was the client worth in the end?

    Good idea btw

Results are results, but I've had no success when I sent unsolicited but beautiful proposals to businesses prior to 2008 (won't do it since then). These mindmaps are really nice! However, since they are unsolicited and a one-time thing, I'm not sure they'd succeed.

Could you share with us what other steps you had to take to get that client from the (19 or 20?) batch that you sent? Did you call them or did they call you? What was your cost-benefit/payback?

    Thanks!

The client I got is $4K per month = $48K per year IF they stay for a full year which is a big if.

They called me from the letter/mindmap - it cost me around $200 I believe so well worth it but the numbers are too low to say it wasn't anything but a fluke.

I have years of business and sales experience which likely helped when I did get the call.

Thanks for the data. Well, sounds to me like it worked. Like you say, we don't have enough data to figure out any consistent ratios but you sent what, 20, and got one callback...I'd call that a success.

Of course nobody would expect the mindmaps to sell the clients all on their own. But the fact that someone did call back is important.
