How to build a SMS list with no advertisers?

How would I go about building a list if at first the list will have little to no people and it will not be receiving any coupons?

I was going to do SMS marketing here, but I found a competitor that I just can't get ahead of for some reason. They offer monthly service type stuff, but all I see done are blasts. I want to beat this company and make some money, myself!

So I need to get a bigger list with a better price...

    Offer something else of value besides coupons. A good way to build up an SMS list is to target local colleges and offer students ways to make money. Every college student is in need of cash and pretty much all of them have cell phones and text regularly. Just print up some flyers saying to text CollegeMoney to 54545 (or something similar) and then give them a link to download a free money making report. You should be able to build up a good list of college kids to target and then you can send them other offers down the road.

      Or you can insert a QR Code in the flyer and instead of giving them out, just stick them in high traffic places. You offer the same thing except your don't let them take the flyer, so you can have more opt-ins over time.

        Yeah I live in a city of about 25,000 people. About 19,000 of which are college students. The college makes up most of the town, haha. So I am going to go with my girlfriend and post fliers around the campus. I am going to offer them a short and edited version of a WSO I am about to release on making money from your iPhone/Android phone.
