Will Facebook take away our Fan Pages?

I'm not clrear on the interpretation of FB's terms of service for fan pages.

Am I breaking ANY rules if I do the following:

1) grab a vanity url on facebook that will look like:

www.facebook.com/HamiltonCoupons

2) build a page and name it Hamilton Coupons
or should I name it Hamilton Coupons.com ????
so that, FB can not accuse me of using "generic" terms

3) build a website, www.HamiltonCoupons.com

Would the above work for me or will I lose my page ?

I don't think you will lose your page if you are making it for a business or website. I think generic terms applies more to 'pizza', 'shoes', 'music', etc.

If you read my initial post carefully you'll see that I'm NOT questioning the use of pages for business purposes. My worry is that my plan, see above, may be in breach of FB's terms of service.

Facebook has the right to take away your ADMIN previllages and turn it into a "community page" if they think that the topic of your page is TOO GENERIC (whatever that means).

the danger here is that you'll work your butt off to reach 5000 + fans only to have your ADMIN privilages taken away from you.

Frankly, that risk exists no matter what you do. FB is already deleting sites it doesn't like during recent "upgrades." They've recently removed administrator rights to huge groups that have conservative political views and shut down those pages.

They're just warning you that they own the site and are letting you use it until they deem otherwise. They don't care what you think. You are playing in their sandbox and they can kick you out.

Your safest bet is to build your fan page site and link it to your main website. When setting up your fan page, you'll see where to list/link the fan page to your internet website domain. This is a recommended strategy to show you have a "real" business outside of FB.

Next, try to get as many fans as possible into your own list and database outside of FB. If your fan page is ever deleted or confiscated, you still have as many contacts as possible.

That being said, the likelihood of this happening with your page seems small. You appear to be building a page to promote coupons and that is your business. Why would that be generic? You don't need to name your FB page .com. Use that for your offsite domain with a link to FB.

Obviously with this risk, it still doesn't mean you're not going to go ahead and build it. The greater the reward, the greater the risk. Build it with a contingency plan to minimize your risk.

My recommendation is to get as many contacts in your own offsite list as possible, that way you can reconnect if need be.
