Put a little Chipotle into your business..

I'm about to head to the gym but when i was browsing on my iPhone through the forums... I noticed a post in the main IM discussion forum about giving stuff away for free.

I decided to grab my laptop and make this post because once you realize the importance of trust and friendship... your sales and closing will increase drastically.

When I say "put a little Chipotle into your business" I don't literally mean buy burritos and supply them to your employees. I mean follow their strategies. I have been an employee at one of the best performing Chipotle's in the nation. It's so fun working there that I simply do not want to stop working there even though it'd be more profitable for me to use that time sleeping lol.

HOW did Chipotle get so big?!?

Well the founder, Steve Ells... wasn't doing so well in the beginning. He opened his first restaurant in Denver and it was failing miserably.. until he had a vision.

He knew how great his food tasted compared to all of the other Mexican food places in the area so he created a marketing plan to get his food in front of as many people as he could as fast as he could... HE GAVE IT AWAY

Yes, Chipotle was started because they GAVE AWAY THEIR FOOD IN THE BEGINNING.

Even today we are required to give away $25/day or $150/week in food and we set up buy one get one promotions with schools/businesses/etc. all around.

If you provide a great service and know it.. implement this strategy and I promise you will see returns.

  • That's how Mrs. Fields did it too -
gave away cookies on the street...gave them a coupon, and pointed toward the store.

I've been giving a few mobile sites away, for free (even the hosting). I choose high traffic areas where people will see the qr code with my website listed as the creator. This has already resulted in a paying client. Yes, giving your service away for free can pay off.

In other words, 'put a little love in your heart' (and now I have that song in my head!).

I once got a free burrito at Chipotle simply for kissing my husband while in line. Some might call that a great PR stunt...I call it genius because here I am, three years later and still talking about it.

Everyone loves free stuff...and if it can help you build your business, even better!

Btw, what Chipotle do you work at?

Give, Give, Give, Give, Give. And when you don't know what to do next......Give some more. You can be very creative on what you give and it doesn't have to cost you a fortune. Look at all of the free stuff the internet marketers give away to get us to buy the "big" product. It works online and it works offline as well.

I use to work for Chipotle and I remember thinking giving away food was not profitable for business. And boy I was wrong. What they did was every Sunday they have a paper bag placed in the newspaper. And if you came in to Chipotle with that paperbag the burrito was free.

Brilliant!!! Because in the end the customers ended up buying a soft drink or chips and guacamole or whatever. And Chipotle had a customer for life, because the customer continued to come back. Awesome!

So, maybe we should put a little "Chipotle" in our business

I respectfully disagree. Give nothing. You'll never earn the respect you deserve or build up the air of authority/expertise by giving things away.

It's ok to start small and not charge as much as you would like initially. Go for more after you demonstrate performance.

If you can't successfully market yourself and sell your service without giving it away, how are you going to be able to help the client's company? Just think about that, because I guarantee you they are. That's why they won't respect you and see your value.

(This post is about not giving your services away. If we're talking about a business that sells commodities like Chipotle, then possibly test it.)

I understand what you are saying. Yeah don't give away your entire business, that would be foolish. But why not give away a FREE Google Places submission, then you upsell, offer to optimize their website for X amount of dollars, offer to redesign their site, upsell something. I think that's what adding "Chipotle" in your business means. It 's not about commodities, this can work for any business, if you know what you're doing.

I'm a fan of giving samples, reports, CDs, DVDs, coupons, or even relevant books away for free. But for offering my services away for free.... i'm not a big fan of.

Understandable. That's not really what we're talking about though. It's more about the idea of proving your competence if you haven't done so already.

If you have a clientele and portfolio there's no reason to give anything away.

When I have a client who is struggling but wants my services I put together a contract with them for the services I will offer in exchange for which they send me referrals until I have XX number of paying customers from them. It's not truly giving away (I do that also) but might be more palatable for those who aren't comfortable giving something for nothing.
