How do I work on a clients already built website?

Would I have to contact their previous website builder, or what?

Depends on what you are trying to do. Either way you will need
log in creds. Clients may simply provide log in creds to you. Most
will not and you'll have to deal directly with their web developer
who may resent that you are in the equation.

This actually happens A LOT when the original web developer smells $ action goine elsewhere when they have already been involved with the web build.

Because of this it is useful to simply ask the client to shoot the web developer a short email requesting their log in creds for "their records".

It works, and can save a lot of drama. You'd be surprised at how many
SEO deals have been blown because the SEO was sold to the decision maker, yet by the time web access is organized from the original developer, the original developer offers your SEO statement of work at a reduced price and the prospect feels some sort of weird obligation to the original developer.

Gotta be clever with how you handle these situations sometimes, not always but sometimes. Web developers are usually very territorial.

    Cheers

Aha, that is a situational question. If the webmaster is still in connection with the company you are in, that's good. You just have to ask for log in credits. In some situation, the web builder has run away (like in ours), so we just rely on the manual he provided and waiting for the new web builder to come in and continue the pending progress.

I would think that there is a way you can get the existing information once you log in, then use the same on a new website that you are making for them.
From a marketer's point of view, I would want the client to see the difference once the job is done, while keeping the data as they may want it.

    Could this be possible?
