If you're explaining how much income you can bring into them, a monthly payment will be worth it. I wouldnt go after companies where they make little money per customer. Going after companies where 1 customer is worth a lot, such as moving companies, or even locksmiths. These are needed services, and seeing them at the top of google with a good site/service to back them up will surely bring them in loads more revenue.

Explaining to them your worth, by the worth they will receive monthly is a good way to sell the idea imo.

call it a development subscription? as maintenance fee sounds like youre charging just to keep the damn thing ticking over when (in the business owners eyes) that should be a gimme anyway.
Maintenance fee suggests that in 12 months time the business will be in the same place it is in now , its just maintaining the status quo, who wants to pay a monthly fee just to stand still?

The business wont mind paying to be moving forwards though .

Well I'm going to be getting clients on Google places (not me I'm out sourcing the work) And I heard there is maintenance to follow up on the clients rankings and what not... So why not charge my client a monthly fee?

Hi mate, try reading my post again. the maintenance is to improve or maintain the ranking , however maintaining doesnt sound as attractive as developing. Would you happily pay say $150 a month just to maintain something , would you be far happier being asked to pay it told its for development?

Its a small play on words but youre the one saying youre having trouble 'selling' the maintenance fee

As long as you are providing a true monthly service and monthly results, it is easy for them to pay each month.

If you charge a monthly fee, just because and offer no value, then you are fighting an uphill battle.

I agree with this. I find it is easier to get recurring fees for things like mailing list management to go along with their website / fan page. Just saying< "it costs X, but you have to pay me an additional 250 a month to maintain it" I know I'd ask what that entails, what do you do each month, etc. But, when I say it is for managing your list, sending X discounts, coupons, offers, etc, processing the adds and duplicates then they see that you are doing something for them and there is value there.

All this is based on a simple site too, for something interactive and complicated then maintenance is something you might have a lot less of an issue getting someone to agree to.

I was thinking about leasing sites that I rank on the first page of Google. But that seems pretty pointless now a day since people will most likely click Google places before they look at the organic listings...
