How I Landed My First Offline Clients (Step by Step)

Hey Warriors,

About a 4 months ago, I decided to change directions in my business and move into being an offline consultant offering online services to small and medium offline businesses.

So I purchased a ton of WSO's on the subject, picked a few of the concepts that really fit my personality and interests and went out there and put it into action.

Today I'm going to share with you the exact steps that I used (and still use) to generate my first few clients. Hopefully you will find this information useful if you are struggling to get your first offline client : )

1. Industry Research - I was looking for businesses that had a reasonably high customer value so that pricing wouldn't be a struggle when I went to close. I settled on Psychologists as their hourly rates are around $170 and each new patient stays on for on average 8 sessions. Each new client is approximately worth $1360.

2. Searches - Then I pulled up the trusty Google Keyword tool and searched the main Canadian cities (Population > 100K) to see if there was any search volume for the main term : Psychologist "City Name" ie Psychologist Vancouver, Psychologist Toronoto etc ... I wasn't very picky. If they had any search volume then it was go

3. Video Presentation - I then created 1 video per city (not per customer) using Camtasia (you can use jing for free) talking about the market. Here is how the video goes:
  • Introduction of my self with photo
  • Talk about how no one can find them since they are not listed on first page
  • Show Google Keyword tool and how many people are looking for their services
  • Do the actual search in Google "Psychologist City Name" and point out which companies are getting this business
  • Advise that can only work with 1 company per industry (Scarcity)
4. Contact Info - I then gathered all of the names & email addresses from all of the listings not in the top 3 spots. I grabbed from Google places, PPC ads and directories that actually showed up. I tried to get between 20 - 30 leads.

5. Sent Emails - I then sent an email that states that there are "X" amount of people looking for them each month and that "Company A" & "Company B" are getting the most of that business. From there I put a link to the video that I did for them.

The subject line I used was "City Name Psychologist Wanted" and I sent out all of my emails using didtheyreadit.com (not an affiliate link) to track who opened my emails etc ...

6. Response & Initial Meeting - When people responded, I would set up a quick 15 minute phone meeting to go over a few questions about their business and what they were looking to accomplish.

7. Proposal - After the call I would go back, based on the conversation come up with a proposal and pricing for them.

That's pretty much it. On that initial test, I received 8 inquiries, closed 2 clients and have open talks with 3 others. I actually just received an email back from one that wants to set up a call this coming Monday and I initially emailed her over 2 months ago : )

Hopefully you guys find this information helpful and I would love to hear what's working for you to get new clients. Anything from prospecting, lead generation or closing techniques - I'm all ears

Shawn

*** Update: For those that PM'd me I've included the video that I sent below:

Very nice system. Did you say you got 8 inquiries out of 20-30 initial email sends?

    Shawn,

That's a great blueprint and easily you could have sold the finer details as a WSO "Offline Case Study". I know that you haven't mentioned actual customers as yet, but it's encouraging and I wish you a lot of success in all you do.

    Thank you for sharing

    Shawn,

This is an excellent Blueprint. There is so much money to be made from the offline community. Instead of trying to do battle with other seasoned internet marketers who are all chasing the same online things, you have stepped out and used the same tools for a market less familiar with creating an online prescence.

I love the way that you did your research to determine which group to target. I feel a WSO in the making.

Congrats on landing your first clients and I wish you continued success.

The first client was website setup at $297 and $197 per month SEO services to rank for 3 keywords

Second client was Google Places $497 to optimize and rank on first page of Google

I had created my own website, but that really never came up with the clients since I'm using a direct sales approach. The prices I listed in the response above and I offer Wordpress sites. Much easier (for me at least) to set up the on page stuff correctly

This thread is better than 90% of the crappy 'offline WSO'' out there... trust me.

    Questions.
How do you get the contact info for each? use software or manually?
How do you promote each service you offer - Different video for each one? Or same video and then decide on SEO/websites/Google Places etc?

This is a good way to approach prospects. Using videos to your advantage and get them to call you instead of cold calling. A lot of people that want to try the local SEO service route but hold back because of the cold calling factor.

Hey Dhira ... Thx for the great feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed the content. Let me answer you questions below:

        1. I actually get the contact info manually. I basically go into each of the websites and click on the contact us button to get the owners name and email if not available on the front page. I have fiddled with Power Leads Pro, but not sure how accurate the scraping is.

        2. Each video is just showing the overall searches for that market. Once I do the initial call with them and get a feel for their budget and needs then I offer the services accordingly.

        Hope this helps... Shawn

I totally agree TopGun .. I hate cold calling and this definitely helps with that. I'm just looking for people to raise their hands to show some interest. It makes it a lot easier to prospect .. in my opinion.

    Great work!
I was wondering - You said you landed 2 clients and have 3 others interested,
since everyone can't have the top ranking and really there are only the top 3 positions in google that matter-How are you planning on handling this when you can't get everyone ranked 1-3?

The clients are in different different cities. I only offer 1 service per client per city. I will never try to provide the same services for the same keywords. Definitely don't want to be keeping against my own clients

      Hey Dave,

Sorry there's not real download link as it's hosted on screencast.com, but let me try to fill you in on the message:

I introduce myself, show them how many people are searching for them each month, show how the top 3 positions get over 80% of the traffic, show them which of their competitors are getting all of this business, talk about how much how much a new client is worth to them and finally advise that I can only work with one industry per city.

That's it in a nutshell. Hope this helps and sorry you can't see the video

I hope the customers who didn't respond to you didnt have the same trouble.

    Hey Shawn,

I'm following along with my review copy of your soon to be released WSO and I landed here. I'm 3 pages in and already, you've shared some very clear insight.

This thread is quite excellent by itself. I agree with the other poster who said that this info could have been sold as a righteous WSO. And, I'm glad you posted it here, for free. The bottom line is - you're spelling it out. If you want to be successful - here's a good "lazy" method. Less steps is a good thing though, right?

Shawn, you are the real deal. You wouldn't know how to speak of situations the way you do if you hadn't been there yourself. You do a great job of laying out simple steps that can help start or boost a local marketing consultancy sales flow.

    Thanks!

Hey Dennis .. Great question. I will never offer the same service to multiple companies in the same market (except for websites). So I can offer a different service that wouldn't compete directly with the other one.

The goal of this method is really to get one client per city per industry

      Shawn,

Thanks for this as I have already started to implement this strategy here in Victoria. Sent out 15 emails last night for one particular service and got one solid lead.

I do have a question though. While searching for other services and service providers to target, I came across lots of local searches that bring up Google places listings, local directories and yellow pages listings as the first or top three results.

When this happens, do you or would you bother pursuing that professional service and business/websites within that industry and create videos selling Google Places and directory listings? Would you try to still pursue those businesses to sell them on getting to the top just below the places pages, directories and yellow page listings?

I have found 3 professional services and 2-3 search terms that bring up straight organic results which is exactly what is needed to offer but for the rest of the 5-7 industries, I hit the road block above. Your's or anyone else's recommendations as to how to proceed for this would be greatly appreciated.

      Cheers

        Hey Jordan,

Glad to see that you are putting it in to action and seeing some results. Great job.

As for the roadblock, it really isn't that. The videos that I send basically show the market, how many are searching and who the competitors that are getting this business. They don't specifically state exactly what service.

So if the keyword triggers regular listings then offer SEO and if they trigger the "7box" then offer Google places. The point being that they need to be positioned correctly when people search that specific term.

        Hope this makes sense.

        Shawn

Yes .. depending what their situation is and how bad their website is, I do charge for the on page stuff or just suggest doing a new site from scratch.

If the site isn't too bad then I offer ranking or Google places depending what is being triggered by Google for their keywords.

      Hopefully this helps

Awesome information you have presented here.

One question I did have was regarding the search volume for the keywords. In your Calgary video you showed 476 searches combined for those 3 keywords. And based on those numbers you showed how having the top spot and then getting 1% or 2% would get you certain number of clients and business.

In your experience how correct are those numbers? I ask because let's say those numbers are correct and they get 1% and make like $1200/mo then they can justify paying $500/mo for the SEO service. However, say the real numbers were like only 235 ppl total and now they are only doing $600/mo only, but still paying $500/mo for the service.

Would they still continue with the service knowing that they ROI is not that high compared to what the numbers showed in the video that was sent to them? Or do you let them know beforehand that numbers are just estimates and they could be a bit lower or higher once they are ranking?

By the way what sort of pricing do you offer for straight SEO if the keyword triggers organic listings? If the keyword triggers merged Google Places/organic listings or Google 7-pack do you offer just Google Places service and if so how much do you typically charge for that on a monthly basis? Any setup fees with any of your services?

      Hey mrtrance,

I'm glad you enjoyed the info and hopefully find it useful.

To answer your question, I'm not sure how accurate those numbers are, but we are pulling them from the source: The Big G

That being said, it's not important the exact number, but what's important is that we can show the client that people are searching each month for them and they need to get in front of them.

When I'm actually on a call with a potential client, I like to always talk in terms of "What a New Client is Worth to Them". This way it's much easier to say "If you were to only get 1 or 2 new clients each month, you would be way head" - Just an example.

      Hope this helps

      Shawn

By the way what sort of pricing do you offer for straight SEO if the keyword triggers organic listings? If the keyword triggers merged Google Places/organic listings or Google 7-pack do you offer just Google Places service and if so how much do you typically charge for that on a monthly basis? Any setup fees with any of your services?
My standard pricing is $497 set up and $197 per month per most services, but obviously this can change depending on the client and the industry that they are in. I always try to get a recurring charge, but doesn't work out all of the time

    Just an update:

I just did my first video and mailing today and I have a possible client! She has been beaten out of money from 3 companies here in San Diego in the past and is very pessimistic about the industry. I was very honest with her and explained that I have been doing online marketing for 2 years but am brand new to the offline market but will be very transparent with her! This is extremely exciting and I thank you Shawn for the valuable information you have given. I will keep this thread updated as to what happens.

P.S. What good person/company is good for monthly SEO services that gets results from Warrior Forum?

      Hey Steve,

Glad you enjoyed the post have found it useful. As for the PPC listings, I pretty much disregard those and if they ask you have 2 options.

      1. Set them up a PPC campaign for them
      2. Talk about how expensive clicks can be and that you like to focus on organic and google places which free (except for your fees to keep them there )

      Hope this helps

Everything is easy if you know what you are doing

If you aren't sure, there is a bunch of great information right here in this forum or the other solution (I what I recommend) is to find people that are already experts at ranking Google Places.

You can check in Warriors for Hire, Fiverr or sites like Odesk for qualified people to do this work for you.

      Hope this helps

Anyways to avoid this issue. I actually added the YouTube video to my first Post for those who were asking for it.

    Really appreciate this.

I had a course that went over this method very in-depth and showed you exactly how to structure the videos.

I probably sent it out to about 12 businesses before getting so fed up with the whole process since it suggested that you do a whole website review for EACH individual business.

It became absolutely insane since each video review can take 10-15 minutes in film time alone!! On top of which not one of the companies (I know 12 is a weak number!1) even opened the e-mail!!

Really appreciate it - will start to use this method ASAP!!

Hey Wilder .. Glad you liked it.

That's the thing with this type of prospecting. It's all a numbers game and if you spend too much time creating videos for people that aren't actually going look at them or that are interested, it can get tiring real fast

Probably why most people give up.

Let us know how it turns out for you with this method

    Great post Shawn!

Quick question... you say in your vid that you just work with one client per industry not to place your own clients in competition, which makes perfect sense. Then, you say you closed 2 clients and open talks with 3... my question is... how do you handle this with 3 to 5 psychologists? In truth, you are indeed competing for the same keywords for the same clients. Your input would be appreciated

Good question. If I email 30 surely more than one will want to rank for "Calgary Psychologist".

When you say you 'don't offer them the same service'... what do you mean?
Do you try to rank for the same keyword using something else like Videos if the first client had you do a website?
Or do you just try to steer them to another keyword, like "Calgary mental health specialist"or something like that?

Hey T2007, the other clients and open talks were in different cities.

Just to clarify, I will not offer the exact same service or try and rank for the same keywords for 2 different clients. If one once web design and the other Google places, no problem. But not both for Google places for the same keywords.

      Hope this helps clarify

      Hey Dhira,

If they want SEO , then I steer them towards other keywords ie Calgary depression treatment, or calgary marriage counselling.

    Yeah this method definately works.

    I chose 2 niches.

Niche 1. Sent out 76 emails. Got 2 replies Appointment set up for after new year (he's on holiday for 8 weeks) Another lead wants me to contact him also after new year if i'm not already working with the first guy.

Niche 2. 91 emails sent. Appointment to be scheduled 1st week November.
This prospect wants to develop his site (current site is flash which is bad for rankings)
    and will probably do SEO.

    Good result I think.

Will keep you updated as I'm creating another video tonight.

        Hey Dhira,

For this I was actually scraping the leads myself directly from Google, Google Places, the PPC ads and some directories that I found.

Now I'm using PLP, but it's a bit expensive.

        Hi there

        I use this scraper

New Wealth Development - FREE SERP Scraper

and just run through the list

copy and paste the results into word doc, find and replace, type " , " (not the quotes) into the find box and then the box below ^p enter to separate onto next line and then export to excel.

25 email is too small, you want a minimum of 50 emails I say. I get responses about the 60-70 email mark.

        Thanks

    Shawn,

Great ideas and info. The video summarizes things very well and I especially liked the line "month after month after month ..."

As far as the video not loading for some people, I think you would be better not to use .wmv files as they are not as well supported on various machines. Better to use something like .mp4.

First of all, congratulations on taking that uncertain step into local offline marketing. I totally agree that it can be a worthwhile adventure. The thing that scares most marketers in local offline businesses is the need to talk directly face-to-face or on the phone with potential clients. You can't get the client any other way unless you're willing to put one foot in front of the other. I really liked your video approach.. especially pointing out the 80% of clicks went to the top 3 spots. That by itself is enough to shake anybody's booty. To take this one step further, I would strongly suggest you aim your local offline marketing towards a niche where you don't run into competing clients. You are spending a lot of time trying to get clients in each area. It would be nice if you could capitalize on more than one client in each area.

    Cheers and congrats!

Could you please further elaborate on what you meant by him getting involved in a niche where he was not running into competing clients? Are you referring to his own clients battling versus each other? Or are you referring to other Consultants? Hey Terry,

Thanks for the feedback and I agree with you, but it's not like I can't work with different companies in each city. It's just that I won't offer them the same service or keywords.

This method is a numbers game and if I can land one business per industry per city I think I'm doing pretty well

You are spending a lot of time trying to get clients in each area. It would be nice if you could capitalize on more than one client in each area.

      Cheers and congrats!
      Hey Sownsow,

    Amazing thread man!

    One question though...

Since you're targeting clients with high ticket customers, don't you think you could be getting more for your services?

Some people say they charge dentists $500-$1000/month for SEO alone.

It seems like you could be charging more?

    Nice job, Shawn.

I've done similar services for my clients (although I haven't used your email approach yet) and have to agree that the local businesses can really benefit from your offers.

Hope you don't mind, but figured I'd add a few things that have worked for me also since this is a great thread.

In addition to Google Places I tend to claim as many review/business directory sites that would fall into the niche.

Ex. Yelp, Urbanspoon, TripAdvisor, Citysearch, Yahoo Local, HotFrog, DiningGuide, etc.

The beauty of this is you don't have to totally create new content, just reword it a bit and if you're already doing one the rest are easily completed and will increase the perceived value and price point for your clients.

In addition, I set up YouTube and Eventful profiles as both have DoFollow links and that will either help the clients website or places page rank a little better.

I also only target one business per category in each demographic. However, I make it clear that if they aren't interested in ongoing support/services/etc. that there is no guaranteed exclusivity.

I do agree with a previous poster on increasing your price point (especially if your clients have a high LTV as you stated). I won't expand on this now, but can clarify how I'd approach it if anyone wants to know.

Since you've already set up clients in the Psychologist niche, I'd use a few months of the Google Places Analytics data as a case study for future clients. Ex. 400 views of profile, 12 went to website, 8 requested directions, etc.

Lastly, the video idea was great. In the future I would open with something along the lines of "In this video you'll learn about several untapped places where your prospects are looking for you, one of which had 483 (actual number for views from keyword tool) in the last month alone, and how you can position your (business type) to stand out from your competition..."

    Jon

P.S. Oh yeah, I'd also put the video up on YouTube and keyword tag it. (This may open up some video marketing opportunities for you in the future).

      Thx

I can vouch for this method working. I was sending out videos that look a LOT like the OP's videos. Thank you OP for your generous share. I got lazy and stopped sending them. Thank you OP for reminding me to pick up a working method and to get off my lazy *** and get working again. Will post my results here if anyone is interested.

Shawn, I'm not sure if you are still responding to this thread, but what are your results to date? Are you still sending out videos? If you care to share, what did you offer the clients you closed and what did you charge? I'll share first. I charged my first clients $499 to redesign their site with an ongoing $399/month for SEO and site promotion.

      Hey IM,

Thx for jumping in here to share your experiences. Glad to see someone else getting good results from this method. It definitely does work, but I agree with you, it can be tough to keep it up on a regular basis.

The key to success is continuing to email regularly and just let the numbers work themselves out

Yep, I'm still using this method for prospecting as long with other methods like sales people, telemarketers and direct mail campaigns. The only difference now with the video method is that I scrape the leads with a tool instead of manually getting them, and I have a VA do the emailing for me through my didtheyreadit account.

I personally charge $497 for GP setup or website design and then $197 monthly.

    What a great thread Shawn!

I agree with many of the previous comments that this would have been a solid WSO on its own--simple, effective, and proven to work--well done!

I think the power in this method isn't just the "how you found clients" (which I see many people focusing on) but the actual formula of your video.

Those not experienced with copywriting might not notice it, but Shawn's video actually uses several powerful psychological triggers to transition prospects into buyers.

For example one key thing Shawn does (which I always advise in my own products as well) is that he breaks down the value of the service he is offering. Pay close attention to the "what can you reasonably expect for results" breakdown...I guarantee prospects are seeing dollar signs in their eyes when he breaks down the numbers.

Also the "no scarcity" scarcity of his closing was well done.

I advice those looking to implement this technique to really break down the MANNER in which Shawn presents the content of his video...and try and duplicate that in your own efforts.

My only *minor* criticism of Shawn's video was that the start of the video was a bit slow to get to the point. I would have moved more quickly from an attention getting hook to the "here's who I am" and then ASAP into the "here's why this video is important to you" (which would be showcasing the Google search results...what they REALLY care about)

    Cheers Shawn,

    ~Dexx

Didyoureadit is really cool and not that expensive. Although it's a bit longer than sending one email to several companies at a time, in my opinion it's worth.

This way you can see who opens it and who may not even have received the email all together.

    Thanks for this information.

My understanding is that you got around 8 clients from 86 emails. These are excellent numbers. I rarely get those.

I do a lot of different things for my clients: SEO, sites setup, email consulting, mobile sites etc. But the main problem is to get clients. Especially a few first ones. After that referrals start working and a general understanding of how everything works slowly comes.

I constantly test different email templates. Probably not surprisingly, different email templates work better or worse for different businesses.

I do use video and it definitely helps.

Thanks for this new resource - didtheyreadit, I did not know about it. I'll take your information and adjust some of my actions.

This thread has set fire to the idea of offline marketing that I've had in my mind for months now. Thank you very much for this. I have a couple of questions too.

In your first few sales, did you collect the entire $497 payment upfront before starting or did you maybe take half then and half when you got their site ranked? Also, did you do a test run on this "local strategy" before hand to make positive sure you could rank for them?

UPDATE: Well, I've finished the first set of slides to create my first video. Wow, it took a few hours. I created a custom background, did screenshots, etc. I have to say, it really looks great, thank you OP for the inspiration. Now I am going to work on my presentation. Once finished, those emails will go out. That will be in a couple of hours from now. I also purchased a subscription with didtheyreadit.com. Wish me luck!

@dminorfmajor If I am doing a new "lead gen" site for them, I always get paid upfront for that. Then, once they see the site, I bill for the SEO. I hope this helps. If you are going for SEO only, then get that payment upfront. I would bill them a higher amount for month one which would include setup.

Thanks for the reply! I'm pretty pumped up about this new venture so any new information is great. The only thing I'm scared about is if I get a customer for ranking their site for "a local term" and a month later, their site not even being on page 1.

Most of my own personal SEO'ing is done over long periods of time with forum backlinks and linkmarket.net. For this new offline marketing SEO I was thinking about using Fiverr blasts to hopefully get quick results. Spending around $30/mo on Fiverr SEO gigs should be worth it if you can charge a local company $100-200 a month to keep their site ranked.

Do I have the right idea here or should I be looking at other methods for getting local terms ranked?

You can educate your clients regarding Google and how they move sites around every so often and that the process is a long term one, not a 1-2 see ya later proposition. You can do the fiverr thing. My favorite new strategy is to create a YouTube channel for each local niche client I get. Example: Alaskan fishermen. I would then create short videos for every town in Alaska (easy to do with Windows Movie Maker) that had keyword optimized descriptions. Over time, the channel becomes a PR5. Link to your client's site. Many times, that's all you need. If they bail on you, remove the link.

        Hey Dhira,

You are going to need to test different headlines and use a program like didtheyreadit to see if anyone is actually opening your emails. I personally use a subject line of "City + Niche Wanted" or "Looking for a Niche in City"

I have not used easy lead finder, so I'm not exactly sure where that program pulls it's leads from. For this method, you need to be pulling emails from the results on page 2,3,4 etc ... for the main keyword term. If Easy Lead Finder doesn't do that, then you may just try scraping them manually for your first set.

        Hope this helps

        Shawn

        Hey DminorFmajor,

You have the right idea here. Apart from Fiverr, you can find some good resources right here on the WF to do the SEO for you. But the idea of spending Approximately $30 on SEO and charging $200 or so a month is what this business is all about

      Hey DMS,

Just to clarify, I did not get 8 new clients from those original 86 emails, that would have been sweet, but that was not the actual results

I landed 2 clients with a 3rd one on the way from that first set which I feel is still pretty good.

Looking forward to hearing your results

    Hi Shawn,

I am going for my first local client tomorrow and this presentation comes handy. I got a question though, you mention that you do one video per city. In this example video, you are targeting psychologist.

Lets say I want to target multiple trades in the same city, for example: dentists, lawyers, beautician in Singapore. Should I create one video per trade? I believe that is more specific and targeted.

Having said that, I am going to try this method tomorrow as well as on another website I am ranking for.

      Hey Rod,

You would need 1 video per industry in your city as you need to show them how many people are searching for them specifically.

      Hope this helps

OK, so I sent out 54 emails. I used the yellow pages online and painfully went through all the Google Places results. I am now sifting through the Adwords Ads to see if I can pick up a few more. I keep hitting refresh on my video's view counter (pretty ADD, I know).

Best of luck to you man. Let us know how many emails/calls you get back.

I got one response, although it was not what I was hoping for:

"Your message, as you sent is deceptive (and false). Do not send me solicitations like this again."

OOPS! Well, I think some people don't like the "Looking for a {keyword} in {city}" subject line. Moving on peeps...

Usually it's pretty quick. Usually within the first 24-48hrs, but funny thing is that I had one come back after about 4 months and wanted to talk.

So I guess it's tough to say for sure

I agree. I'm recording the second video tonight. I'm going to do one per day at a minimum. There are also so many people out there without websites. I actually want to do something with them. Maybe time for postcard marketing!

I agree about there being a lack of actual websites in some of these niches. I found only 3 out of the 10 or so tattoo parlors around here had actual websites. Most depend on their FB Like pages. Guess I need to finally learn WordPress. I've been too dependent on my web design software.

Early days, but here are some metrics. Sent 57 emails out. So far, 18 were opened and 0 clicks to the video. I think my email body is a problem, OR a disconnect between email subject and content of email. Maybe all of the people opening the email were expecting new customers.

I don't think it's that bad. It had a hint of infomercial-type phrasing maybe I don't know. I'm still new so that type of phrasing may be just what it takes.

        Hey IM,

I agree with Dminor that it sounds a little to salesy. You might want to try something a little less like a pitch and more of that you are a nice guy trying to help them

        I know it's a fine line

            Hey IM,

            Here are a few suggestions:

            1. Peronalize it if you can (Name of owner)
            2. Introduce yourself and what you do
            3. Compliment them on something they are doing right ie you're on page 2 which is great etc ...
            4. Mention the amount of people that are look for them (you did this)
            5. Mention who is getting most of this business (top 2-3 businesses)
            6. State that you created a personalized video for them that will help them out.

Bottom line, there is not right or wrong way to do this. It's all about testing and tweaking different things to see what works best. Also, just because it works in one market, doesn't mean it will work in another.

            Hope this helps

            Shawn

This thread has been more valuable than many wsos I've purchased.

The real brilliance of this is it's simplicity.

As someone planning to try local seo in the new year I really appreciate this.

It's similar to what I had in mind, but I'd never have thought of the video.

I am curious what your fee(s) would be for such a service. I'm afraid it may not be something I could afford, but thought it wouldn't hurt to at least ask.

                Hey IM,

I would say that's very positive. All you are looking to get from these initial emails, is for a few people that have some interest to discuss your services with you.

You wont' believe how many "Don't have alot of money, but thought I would ask" responses I get. Most of them are blowing several hundred on yellow pages phone book, so we can just move that marketing money to our services

Let us know how it goes.

Well, I made initial contact by phone and he was interested, but in the middle of something. I sent an email thanking him for his time and asked for more convenient times to call so we could continue the conversation. In the meantime, I will have a new video ready tonight for the next city. I have a new non-sales-guy email ready for it. Off I go...

PS - Remember folks, reading other people's progress is fun, but you've got to go out there and do it for yourselves to make it happen!

Congrats on you successes, the first steps are always the hardest.

If I can add one comment...

You have a good strategy in place, however long-term you need start thinking about how you are being perceived by your client base. In my experience, customer loyalty and profits really start rolling when you position yourself as a "problem solver" not just a "service provider"

My recommendation, get on the phone, and start talking to your existing clients and get inside their heads. Find out what their problems are... and start offering solutions.

You don't want to be that "Website Guy" or that "Google Places Guy" You want to be that "Problem Solver Guy"

OK, for all of you following this thread and the OP (thanks buddy for reminding me to pick this up again), I will divulge my super duper secret stealth (use the secret handshake here) method of upselling the client. While building his site, I will also create a local YouTube channel for his area. I will add a category for his niche and create several 30-60 second videos (voice overs thanks to fiverr) with keyword rich titles and descriptions. I will say in the videos "don't forget to mention that you saw us on YouTube!". Then, when those videos start ranking and people start calling mentioning the video he didn't even know he had, he'll call me (if not, I will call). I'll say "well, now that you see it works, are you ready for video marketing?" You bet he will. Add $199-$299/month to the bill. A few months down the road, show him a mobile version of his site. Like it? Here, it's $199, 50% off just for you. Are you getting excited yet? Yeah, I am because I know that this small client will be worth thousands of dollars in the next 12 months if I do my job (which I will, of course).

Wow, nice job with this method, way to think outside the box! I'll give this a shot in my area, as it sure beats me having to cold call people. I like to think of how I would react if I was on the receiving end of marketing. If someone was to use this tactic on me, I would surely feel special and would make a point of following up.

Thought I would post an update regarding my progress of getting started in the Offline field. Along with an idea I wanted to run through you guys first before I did it.

Ok so I've gathered lots of leads and I'm almost ready to send out videos and walk ins. I bought a domain name and have almost finished building it into a website pertaining to SEO in my local area. I figured leaving a website the potential client could go to would be a big help in their decision making. It also lets them know I'm capable of building websites, graphic design and mobile web apps. (those 3 will be outsourced) I'm also plan on offering Free Reports for any potential client's websites.

The idea, not really a new idea, was to make a QR code to put on my business cards and maybe leave in the footer of each email that I send out. The QR code would land on a mobilized page of my website explaining how I can do this same service for them. (QR code marketing) Basically something like, "You just scanned a QR code on a card or from your email, why wouldn't your customers do the same?"

Any of you guys tried this method?

All of this is good stuff, but don't let it stop you from getting those videos done and distributed. When I had nothing, I completed my profile on LinkedIn and used that in the videos. Just do it. Once the ball is rolling, go for refinements.

Sorry if I missed this somewhere, but you you said you got 2 clients from 8 leads out of your initial run of 86 emails. I am curious how many different markets did those 86 emails include? (i.e. psychologists in Calgary, psychologists in Toronto, etc., etc. - how many different ones did you make videos for and email out to in the initial 86?)

If I remember correctly it was 5 cities for a total of 86 emails on that first batch.

So, I would like to add some progress here. Out of all the emails I sent (3 niches) over the weekend, I got one person who scheduled a phone call to review their business. The other 2 niches were dentists. I don't believe that this method works as well in the dentist niche simply because of the competition, not a problem inherent in the method itself. Somewhere someone was selling a WSO that talked about sending reports in the mail. Maybe I'll do that.

PS - That interview is tomorrow so wish me luck!

This is actually what I found on the first page:

"The clients are in different different cities. I only offer 1 service per client per city. I will never try to provide the same services for the same keywords. Definitely don't want to be keeping against my own clients "

Also in the first post, he said something about finding 20-30 leads to send out per target market - so I'm guessing 86 would be... what? 3? 4?

      Would like to verify though.

In regards to your other posts - it is cool to see that it's not just the OP getting results from this method. Good for you taking action on this and getting some results for yourself. Keep us updated on how it goes!

As for follow up - I am planning to do something very similar to this to get clients started on a GP Listing optimization and then upsell them from there once they see that I can deliver results. I plan to wait about a week after I send out emails to a market and then if I haven't gotten a client yet I will follow up with the businesses I emailed. I am thinking I will do it by phone, but I may try out sending a follow-up email to the ones that opened it. Not sure. May try it both ways and see what works.

        Hey IM,

I definitely think following up with the people that looked at the video is a good idea, by phone or email (something that I should do better )

Thanks for getting back to me on that. I'd say 2 clients out of 5 videos isn't too bad. Especially since once you make the first one it is simple to change it a little bit and make another one.

I've done phone sales before - and was actually good at it. Ironically I have a bit of a phobia of phones (not just phone sales - talking to anyone on the phone). So I definitely can talk to people on the phone and know how effective it is but prefer this method because the process it at least started via email. That cuts down my time on the phone.

My profile image is part of my logo for my new business - I'm actually not really happy with how just that part of it looks without the rest of the logo. Glad you like it though I may try uploading more of the logo sometime but I wasn't sure how it would fit in that small of an area.

I've been working on my own video but I'm having a bit of technological trouble recording the video lol...

Well, I met with the second lead. She was just all over the place. I could tell that she was just not ready to buy. I call her the "information collector" type. If I beat her over the head for another 20 minutes or so, maybe I could have bullied/convinced her to buy, but that's just not the way I roll. Sigh, less $$$ for me. Anyway, off to make more vids.

cool method - im gonna try this with web design - quickly change their site - to a fresh design - or rather put their logo and name onto a better looking site ---

for ranking your using something with low competition - how are you getting this is it mainly back links ? or are they v easy to rank with anyway ?

I agree with you. Not everyone will buy and you really don't need to be forceful. Either they get it or they don't. Quickly qualify them and move on

      Hey Ben_R,

Good thing is that you can sell any services with this method. Just modify the video to fit what services you offer.

Let us know how it goes and thx for the Spy Pig resource. I just heard about it last week and it seems to do the same as did they read it.

      Hey dminorfmajor,

Glad that this info got you going again. Sometimes it's just something small that lights the spark again, but it's "taking action" that gets results. So that's all on you

My business is going great. Still use the videos, but have also hired some outside sales reps to get some clients as well as telemarketers to generate some leads and prospects for me.

Just trying a bunch of things to see what sticks

Hey guys, I wanted to mention something I'll be trying over the next week or so. I don't know if I've mentioned it, but I have a great profile on LinkedIn with almost 700 connections. Recently, some of my connections include plumbers, electricians, cleaners and most recently (I didn't even notice this one until today) a local dentist. They all have one thing in common. Their websites really need help and they don't rank for anything relevant. So, guess what? Yep, you guessed it, boy are you guys smart I'm going to visit each one's site, do the search numbers, and record a short video for each of them with specific recommendations of what I can do for them and how I can help their business grow. Remember, these contacts are much "warmer" prospects as they've accepted my invite on LinkedIn OR they've sent me a request to connect. I'll start with those who requested a connection with me first. OK, I hope this idea helps someone! Wish me luck!

I just want to throw in a couple tips and also to help the quality of our industry.

You can't build a business or make a decent income if you only charge pennies.. the term 'you get what you pay for' is a reality.

Charging prices like $497 for websites and $199/month for seo/google places is pure madness.

The time invested in generating the lead, nurturing it and finally closing the deal.. and then work on the project.. you essentially are making less per hour than you would if you had a job at McDonalds.

Offer a quality service.. that actually delivers results as you've discussed with your clients.. set proper expectations of work to be done and timeline of how results will progress... and MOST IMPORTANTLY charge a real price. Are you a "Professional" or an "amateur"?

Websites should be $1297+ and SEO should certainly be atleast $500/month or more. Of course, pricing can vary by industry and your geographical location but i'm telling you, these are absolutely MINIMUM prices to charge no matter how small a town you live in.

A lawyer charges atleast $150/hour.. so one day of work for him would cover a $1297 website... a dentist charges $200+ for a simple teeth whitening visit, and the lifetime value of that customer could be $5,000+.. focus on fewer clients, include value, higher prices and make real results for them. Your business will grow faster and you will make a lot more money.

Routinely, I close dentists, lawyers, doctors, psychologists, salons, and other types of businesses at $3000-10,000+ websites and my SEO clients start a minimum of $1500/month with atleast 6 month contract.

In reality, most of you who charge a couple hundred dollars for ranking high value terms, end up not bringing in the results you promised to your client because its harder than you expected, more time consuming and ultimately you determine its not worth the money.

So do yourself and every other marketing consultant/company a favor, be legit and be a Professional.

This wasn't meant to bash anyone, merely to provide some advice and encouragement to the fact that people will pay more for your services if you provide value and results.

    Best of Luck.

I agree with AffiliateUrge. Even when I started with my first offline client, I started with a fee of $700 per month. Now I charge $1000 or more per month. Of course, my method of convincing them is using results in advance, which helps a lot with closing the sale.

Ever since meeting my first client in Dec 2011, it's been a game changer.

I quit my day job on 18th May 2012 and now I'm building up the business with my business partner (former client / or still is)

We recently just done a pitch to an insurance company and they were impressed. We'll get the contract...sales cycle takes awhile.

So much business out there. Go out and meet real people and you'll see the connections you make. Feels great to be in control of your life!

Exactly what I was looking for... the video is very helpful.

Question. How do you choose what niche to target? I came across a site today that is so horrible, I'm thinking 'there's my target!' However, the niche the business is in is competitive. 43k results with keyword phrase in quotes. Besides creating a new site, seo, citations, google plus page, etc what services can I offer to get his site ranked? Or should I focus on other services? I found his site thru a craigslist ad, I think it's the only way he advertises. Also, his yelp reviews are not so hot. average 3 stars.
Any suggestion would be helpful I'm new to offline marketing and am struggling with ranking in a super competitive niche.

I would find a niche that you enjoy and can get passionate about working with.

The reason I chose one of my best clients was because I had their pizza and knew that in my small (50k population) town it was the client I'd work with. What began as introducing and implementing a rewards program for the company has turned into website, social media, advertising, SMS, video, email marketing and more.

Were I in your shoes with the prospect you mentioned, I'd redo their site (my preferred platform being Wordpress with either Thesis or WooThemes) and then hit heavy on keyword targeted video marketing.

Video is easy enough to get to rank and will give you a little time to figure what will be needed to get the site to where it needs to be. On the tune of the 46k results with keyword in quotes...I just looked at one of my clients locations and it's got 26k in quotes. Since I had built a solid foundation (including good copy and no "questionable" tactics) only took me about 3 weeks to get to number one.

Best of luck and let me know if there's anything I can clarify. Hope this helps and best of luck!

    Thanks Jeremy,

Sent you my email in Skype as I don't post enough here to have PM functionality. If you don't get it, let me know and I'll post it in the forum.
