What Wordpress themes are you using for clients?

Just curious what different types of "customizable" wordpress themes you guys are using for clients.

I've used Headway and Thesis for clients so far, considering using OptimizePress (unfortunately I have clients setup using the Multisite function which isnt compatible with OptimizePress).

Of course there's always the gazillions of premium themes for specific niches as well...but I'm looking more at the themes that can be customized for each client.

I am considering this theme however:
WordPress for Business Websites - The SmallBiz Wordpress Theme - A Complete Web Presence for Your Business

What about you guys?

    Thesis exclusively.

We must have had at least 30 custom Thesis sites done by now. Most, I am VERY proud of. It's nice to be able to just crank them out as a glorified child theme. All the features are there.. ready to be implemented.

Poked around at Genesis & Catalyst recently, we have had a few completely custom themes done as well.

I use a few of the StudioPress Themes and iThemes Builder almost exclusively.

I tried the SmallBizTheme you mentioned and it was very buggy/sensitive. So be careful with that one. Their support was very helpful and supportive though, but I really like the other options better.

      Hi VegasGreg,
I'm the theme creator for SmallBiz and this is our full time gig. We work really hard on this and take a lot of pride in it. We've got hundreds of testimonials from happy customers.

What led you to say that our theme is buggy? We live and breathe on customer feedback and I'd like to know what you think so we can address it.
      Thanks,

I've actually spent the last couple hours researching the iThemes Builder and watching the video for it...despite already owning a developer's license for both Headway and Thesis...I think I might actually invest in their all-access pass.

I already have the developer suite for PluginBuddy (which does a lot of the features promoted by the SmallBiz theme).

    Very cool indeed

The other iTheme themes are pretty good too. My developers license for the All Access just expired, and I only renewed the Builder portion. There are a few hidden gems in the All Access though, but the Builder portion covers 90% of what I need.

Once you get the hang of it, it is pretty slick.

I've used elegant themes on 4 sites (the first first sites I've built, two mine and two for clients) and my clients love them. I found it pretty easy to get started and most of my support questions as a newbie were answered pretty quickly. Its a few things I wish were easier, but I don't know if that's because of wordpress or the theme and I guess I don't have the experience yet to know the difference. Still my customers have been happy and I'm using elegant on a third job right now. I can get a site up pretty quick with them. Especially the Chameleon theme. Very versatile for my simple needs.

Ithemes looks great but the question is what if you want to build site to sell to clients, is there a way to export the finished theme so it can be used independent of the builder? The last time I checked it was not possible. It is without a doubt very good but how does it help someone who build sites and sell to clients? Can someone share how they are doing it?

I prefer thesis since it's seo friendly and most of my client are seo clients. It was kinda hard to find a good thesis developer at first but now I get everything done on thesis.

Themes are not even really relevant if you're building your clients site from ground up using wordpress. Can't even tell which team you're using if it's a customized wordpress site.

PM me if you want to see some sites I've done for my clients.

    Hope that helps. =)

I have used elegant themes in the past but now I go with buying individual themes from themeforest.net. It might not be a wise option cost-wise but it serves the purpose very well as they have a huge collection of category/niche specific themes that can help my clients stand out from crowd. I see elegant themes and Woo themes being used all over the internet.

I'm torn on buying pre-designed templates vs customizable "builder" software themes...I just don't want to have to constantly pay an outsourcer just to move widgets around, change the design of certain areas etc.

But...assuming I can just set and forget the theme...a pre-designed theme is very quick and useful!

I use any combination of themes from Elegant Themes, WooThemes, Themeforest, etc. depending on what my client's needs are. A few of the themes listed here look like crap and would never fly with my clients. But then I also charge a lot more than most WF offliners do.

I like the clean layout of Rich WP themes. Premium WordPress Themes by RichWP

However, one of the things I look for in a theme is what the SmallBiz theme is offering, and that is automatic detection for mobile devices.

Here is a link to the framework details for all RichWP themes:

i always prefer to code my own but when in a rush i will tend to buy a premium theme/template - am a big fan of Envato and their themeforest.net site offers some great layouts.

But in all honesty I find most themes and template sites spit out overly bloated and unnecessary code as well as code that doesn't validate or isn't cross browser compatible. In many cases they can also be difficult to customize too... not to mention hidden back linking to their site - in any scenario keeping it simple is best

One of the biggest culprits of bad coding is the inclusion of a twitter feed - most themes that include something like this go the easiest route and go for a direct feed from the Twitter API - if you have a site doing this you need to watch out it can seriously affect your loading times!

For example if the twitter API goes down... and it does pretty much every other day... if your twitter feed if badly designed it will continue to try to and load from it... this means your page never finishes loading... which will cause problems with your server load times... and worse still if Google happens to crawl your page at that moment too... watch your hard work getting your site ranked start slipping down the SERPS due to bad performance... for things like this you MUST cache the results first... and consider loading javascript at the end of your page...

    Hope that helps!

    Hi VegasGreg,

Are we talking about the same SmallBiz Theme? I use it for all my client's sites and can't recommend it enough. It's not buggy at all. In fact it's so easy to use and customise that it's foolproof.

It has loads of different layouts to choose from and is extremely seo friendly. Don Campbell offers the best support around and keeps in contact with updates and fabulous info on small biz marketing in general. His tutorial videos are top notch.

As if that isn't enough, it comes with a ready built Mobile theme attached and integrated Facebook pages. What more can I say?

Anyone undecided should check out Don's website Expand2Web (don't have enough posts yet to add a link).

In fact I'm surprised more Offliners aren't using it.

The SmallBiz theme has the mobile built in plus being able to do Facebook pages from the CP is very nice! So far I've been just doing mobile sites since most of my clients already have websites and they take up way too much time for me. But since you mentioned ElegantThemes, did you see their new HandHeld theme? Looks like a nice mobile theme (HandHeld Mobile WordPress Theme | Elegant Themes). I have a membership here and I'll be using this for my next mobile builds.

I stumbled upon Smallbiz Theme because it was there when I installed Wordpress. The high quality theme. If you want to customize it, it's so easy. If you know nothing, no knowledge of any coding needed. If you are a designer, lucky you. The theme creator took his time to create videos, documentations, etc. Best of all mobile detection, facebook app. No buggy at all.

I have a play site to install other themes to test. And I am so grateful I stumbled upon Smallbiz Theme. Oh happy fault.

When I first got started, I used Elegant Themes. Of course, I wanted to expand my library a bit and looked into StudioPress and WooThemes, but I eventually stumbled across My Site My Way themes on Theme Forest.

Here is their site: Mysitemyway « Premium WordPress Themes.

I am really impressed with their themes. They are extremely easy to use and the features allow you to customize sites a great deal, but if you know a bit of CSS, they're even better.

The shortcodes available are phenomenal and the way they allow you to add short codes into the pages is really slick and user-friendly. I really can't say enough good things about their themes.

Fantastic support, too. I use them exclusively now.

The main theme I use for development is Thesis but I also use WooThemes, OptimizePress and StudioPress when I believe they are better suited for a project. More recently I have created and started using my own WP Go Mobi theme to create responsive sites as none of my favourite sites had a solution that I was happy with.
