Promoting a pool cleaning business online.

The other day I was talking with a fellow who has a pool cleaning business. His work area is in a 20 mile radius of home. He does have a website and is on page one for two or three keywords that relate directly to "pool cleaning" or "pool maintenance". He does get a couple of calls a week from his website but feels he could more.

My question is what could I have offered him in the way of helping him market his business online within such a narrow offline market place?

    Hi Dave,

Not only am I an internet marketer but I run a full service pool company in Massachusetts. We do everything from construction to repairs, cleaning, and have a retail pool supply store which I work out of. I have been in the industry since I was 16 that's 10 years now. As long as he is not in my territory I would be more than happy to help you out with any industry related question regarding marketing.

What you have to understand about the pool business is there is a lot to owning a swimming pool. You deal with chemicals, plumbing, electric, ect. People have lots of questions that need lots of answers. There is no better industry to use the CONTENT IS KING strategy. He may not have time to manage a blog, but that what he can pay you for!

Email marketing has worked great for me even though we are not nearly utilizing it as much as we could. Get them on the list and send them service reminders, let them book their pool opening online, ect.

GET CUSTOMER REVIEWS!! on google places and facebook. This is something I am just now realizing needs to be a key to our strategy. The pool biz is vicious, and full of hacks! People switch companies all the time due to fly by night pool cleaners or poor service. Have testimonials or have a referral call list to give customers.

Again if you have questions ask my site Swimming Pool Service and Construction Amesbury Massachusetts

I built that wordpress theme from scratch myself so it is not pretty looking but I learned a lot. I will be doing a redesign this winter with a nice pretty themeforest theme

A year ago we had no web pressense now we are in a battle for the top spot for 'inground pools ma" and other significant keywords but better than that our company is having its best year yet, going on more pool appointments than the last 3 years combined and working from the first thaw to when the ground freezes solid.

anyway probably a little long winded but let me know if I can help.

Jay, Thank you for your excellent response. He is in California so no competition. If it's okay with you I'll share with him some of the ideas you have shared. You have given me some good ideas too.

    Here is a thought:

Mobile site with a 'Push To Call' button... for emergencies, concerns, 'hey you forgot your tool' kind of calls.

Perhaps a *cool* flyer with a QR Code that takes em to the Web/Mobile site...

I'll let you know if I think of anything else...

Patrick, great ideas. I only learned what a QR code was yesterday. I'll pass them along.

not done yet but click to call and stuff is there.

Mailers with QR codes is a great idea, I will be testing this as well. Would you believe our site had 430 visits from mobile devices in August?! so if he is online a mobile site would be perfect. I am thinking real simple, click to call, quick email contact, a basic services page, and maybe even a cool little quick pool tip FAQ page. If you use jquery mobile this can all be done very lightweight.

Hi David, I think that any local business wanting to increase sales or its customer base would need to learn how the Google Local search works. Google gives you some help if you are an established business in that it may already have a website reserved for that particular business although this doesn't seem to be widely known. You would go through the process of claiming that website and then optimizing for local search results. You would need to generate reviews of the business and submit those and supporting content to the numerous local search concerns who list local businesses under various headings. I have been doing this for a while typically for friends, associates and local businesses who don't have much of a web presence. Having a system to generate back-links is also very helpful. You will also find that the competition for local searches is not so intense since there are fewer businesses competing in that arena. It would also be a very good idea to get up to speed with cellphone apps which often are geared to produce local search results since there is an ever increasing use of QR codes for promotional purposes- restaurants are heavy adopters of these items since they can easily offer digital coupons through using the QR codes to attract more customers. I have been increasing my presence in this market and soon will need to outsource since this type of work is time consuming. I have some references if you are interested. Send me a PM.

        I agree with Merrill.

The first step in a local business is making sure his Google Places listing is top notch. That means getting complimentary reviews from satisfied customers, making sure every service he provides is listed, having beautiful pictures that highlight his work, his trucks, his employees etc. Make sure all pictures are sized the same so they look great and not hodge-podge. Add as many videos as you are allowed.

Make sure his logo is on his places listing and that it is clear and not a fuzzy copy.

Then, start producing more videos and putting them on Youtube so he gets more exposure. Keep backlinking to the videos so they get first page exposure. Use one keyword per video and keep backlinking until each one hits first page for it's own keyword.

        This should increase his exposure.

        Good luck,
        DTaylor

i tried for a year and did not happen. i consumed myself everyday. but then i said to myself, if i am negative about it ... it's not gonna happen. your mindset determines what gonna happen.

So be positive, let it happen, don't think about it too much.

    1. Use good looking signage on every property they service .. like a bandit sign with URL and phone number

    2. If the service techs know there is a pool next door and across the street use a door hanger advert EVERY time they service that client

    3. Start an online newsletter with pool tips and 3-4 booklet you can drop at homes
with Trial Basis service for the 1st month.

    4. The pool people where I live also retail chemicals to the DIY ... but the money in the pool business is repair and new construction.

    5. Referral business from the people the pool company buys his tiles etc from

    6. Use a with people that do business with homeowners or Homeowner Associations such as electricians, HVAC, security company, bug and lawn care ... supply them with door hangers or flyers and work out a $$xx to them when one of their clients get service. Easy to set up and track online.

You get paid for setting this all up for them

and door hangers all work awesome for pool cleaning, can't tell you how much work we get from jsut working in a neighborhood that has lots of pools. You jsut have to make sure the techs actually do it, which is our problem!

Shucks, I may have to start a pool cleaning business!

Hmmm... Might lead to calluses however... Better rethink this.

I think I will immediately cease throwing out the 'Wednesday Specials' paper that comes in the mail, and build a call list...

Thanks to All - Great ideas here!

As a swimming pool owner, discount coupons always get my attention because pool ownership and maintenance is expensive. Coupons could be distributed in a lot of ways, including through a web page, a door hanger, flyers, Pennysaver ads, ValuePaks, and offering existing customers coupons for referring their neighbors or friends.
