Got first salon client today...but took a different turn

Thought I would share this experience today, because this went in a totally different direction than I expected...

I had a 2nd meeting with a salon today (2 locations) to talk about how they could use appointment reminders to help their business. The marketing person, the owner, and the admin girl was at the meeting. My mind was set on fixing them up with a texting solution that would primarily be used to help them remind clients of appts.

As I started showing them the reminder platform that I had custom made (using Twilio), the marketing person was very negative on the idea, because she said their mission statement was to keep everything "personal" to their clients. So she felt that calling them on the phone to remind clients was more inline with their mission. She felt that picking up the phone to call them was just as easy as sending a text, and more "personal". The owner agreed. Yikes!

This meeting was quickly going south, until.....

they expressed interest in using texting as a marketing tool. So... I quickly changed gears and described to them how I set up a local pizza place (using an OpenVBX flow) to build a list of mobile subscribers by either texting a keyword or just calling the local number. I explained how messages could be sent directly from the marketing person's cell phone to the entire list, and offered some examples of ways to use it for their salon.

To make a long story short, they loved the idea and agreed to get started with my 30 day free trial.

So I went home, exported my existing pizza flow, changed some things, then assigned a local phone number to the flow, and within a few minutes had another text/voice system for another niche working perfectly.

Moral of the story is....be flexible, and ask questions, because you never really know what a business really wants until they tell you. You might go in with what you think they need, but in reality they WANT something else.

Also, whatever you offer, make it look like you are designing a "custom solution" just for them and then help them implement it to be successful. That will distance you from ANY competition. Then simply rinse and repeat.

hows the "giving away free 30 day trial " working for you ?

care to share your resind rate? if its low or non existent, how
are you approaching the "now its time to pay? " auto payments?

over here in daytona the chamber of commerce told people how
to get free stuff, then cancel, and find some one else to give you a trial
and run with it, then cancel ans start the whole process over.

Could not believe it. "cream of the crop business advice my ass"

but like all good sheep. guess what a lot of people are doing now.

We stopped all trials. period. and are currently regrouping, and trying to figure out a better way.

As im sure you can tell, i am a bit miffed over this. i have heard some dodgy stuff at those meeting in the past, but this one takes the cake.
and to top it off, its in email newsletter they are sending out....aaaarrrrggg

what do you consider alot of time? I sent an email to them, we met for 1/2 hour twice (would have been once, but the marketing person is from another state and wasn't in town the first meeting), then I set up the flow (15 minutes). Considering they have 2 salons, and could be clients for a long time, the 1:15 minutes I spent was a good investment I think. Time will tell I guess.

I don't mind setting free trials, but so far I haven't converted a single one. It won't stop me from doing them but I never lead with them and only make the offer if I think they will convert. So far my thinking has been wrong

Back to the original post. I run into those type of people who don't think sending text messages is cool. I let them know that they are basing their decision on how they feel about texting and not the market. The numbers and demographics say differently. The fact is today's mobile consumers doesn't give a rat's ass what the marketing director thinks. The mobile consumer does want text messages and have shown through countless studies and research that if you want their business you will market to them on their terms and not those of the marketing director.

          Good luck

I agree and I even mentioned those facts from an article I had just read the day before. But if their mission statement is to be "personal" and they think sending appt reminders is impersonal then there is not much you can do to change their mind. Perception is reality. I wasn't about to argue, just move in another direction and it worked out fine. Maybe their clients will let them know that they would like to receive text reminders, that may change their mind.

haha hey Ken, sounds about as switched on as the Chambers over here in the UK , in their last publication they made a huge thing about a local business setting up its own website and actually (wait for it) winning clients through it !!!! Like it was rocket science and never been acheived before

Do they (Daytona Chambers) not realise that some of their members run that sort of trial business model (eg your good self) for very good reason, and their pathetic advice is damaging, unethical, and to be perfectly honest simply generating a number of parasitical retarded pieces of scum as members

I usually charge a set up fee, but the 30 day trial works fine for me. I set it up so that the biz owner gets a text every time someone new subscribes so they can see that its working every day.

I tell them that it takes a little while to build a list, that's why I help them out in the beginning too. If anyone does cancel after 30 days (no one has yet), its no big deal, they just lost all of the mobile subscribers they built up in 30 days. So what would be the point of that?

They won't be sending any messages out until they have some people to send to, so using it for 30 days is really not getting anything free because they won't have sent out any messages at that point.

That Daytona chamber of commerce sounds pretty messed up. I've never heard of that kind of business advice before, but this shouldn't really be a concern with a text service. If they keep getting free trials every 30 days, they'll never have a list to send anything to! Its a service that is won't really work for them unless they stay with it.

I use this type of marketing all the time and if they cancel they have lost the list then have added to the sms list. I then use that list to send offers to other similar businesses like in this example it would have been offers for other salons.

just FYI you could have set them up with twilios robo-calling - had them record a reminder message and have it auto call their clients reminding them of their appointment...

additionally the text message could have been sent personalized too... ie by inserting their name

just a thought... hope that makes sense...

    cheers,

After your 30-day free trial, how much will you charge them to continue the service?

    Probably $99 for up to 500 subscribers, $149 for 501 to 1000.
