I was thinking of using Twilio for sms marketing for local businesses...

Just want some thoughts on this before I made this decision.
Thanks

I've never tried it myself. I find receiving sales text messages most annoying.
Managing a campaign from a computer will be much more convenient, reducing the amount of button pushing.

This is why I use YadaText. Everything is managed from your PC/Mac within an admin panel.

Works great, and very inexpensive. Can be customized to any niche, and also use voice not just texting.

I agree Twilio is a good service to use. Reliable, low cost etc. You will need an app or need to be a real programmer to make use of it. OPENVBX by itself is one way to start using Twilio and there are some tutorials and help to get you started. I have seen and used a plugin as well. Then there are the full fledged SMS applications.

My opinon of course is to use a complete application for several reasons. OpenVBX is limited and you are dependent upon your programing skills and others to develop what you want. OpenVBX is a framework to build on not a complete SMS application. The plugin you can find on this site did not have all of the functions most SMS marketers want and it runs inside of WordPress(a resource hog). The people selling that plugin have a low entry cost but charge you for every function and update they develop i.e you are paying for every bit of the development cost, it was that way the last time I saw it.

An application on the other hand, there are several available thru members on this site including mine, will be a developed piece of software that you can either rent or own and run the app on your server or someone elses. The applications will have many many features built in that a plugin and OpenVBX don't. The features are what's important. You have to be able to do more than just send a message with SMS, you have to be able to schedule, group, have autoresponders, lead generators, retrieve data from the databases, perform automate billing, etc etc.

You are going to get what you pay for. Research and test several, but I am of the opinion an application is the best way to go. Good luck.

I agree with Scarab but my opinion is just keep doing the research. There are a lot of different options out there and each has its good and bad points. Found out which one is going to suit you best as the platform I use works great for me but may not work well for you.
        Good luck,

Honestly never tried... but if you could narrow down the people you will be targeting with the particular niche that you have... then i guess it could work.

I agree that Twilio is awesome. It's robust, inexpensive and reliable. Be wary of providers that only offer their hosting for your clients.

Not used Twilio, but have used Z mobile and have seen a 30% increase in traffic volume to my business since implementing into my marketing plan. I would be more than happy to share with you the what and the hows.

  • Biggest issue with twillio is that you have to be a programmer to use it. Once you will start using its services, you will realize that you want to change certain things which would require to play with its API which is a time consuming process if you are not a good programmer. Also, it does not provide white label services.

On the other hand I think you should take a look at AvidMobile which is very easy to use, provide white label service and is also very cost effective.
Though you want to use the sms service only for your use, but its always better to have your name displaying at the top instead of the service which you are using.

I wonder will Chad's plugin solve the problem.

I use Lime for my white label SMS and my clients love it. Why reinvent the wheel? Hit the ground running today with mobile coupons, mobile ads, qr code generator, appt setter, text sweepstakes, polling, and surveys and they are all Facebook integrated. Your clients that offer Groupon style offers will love this since their mobile coupons can go viral and they arent giving Groupon or some other daily deal site half of their revenue. Lime is true SMS and has free incoming texts and only 1-1.5 cent outgoing texts. The platform also has invoicing/shopping cart features for your clients as well as full reporting that tracks sent/viewed/redeemed mobile coupons. Make sure and compare Lime head to head with the other true SMS providers out there for features and pricing before you make your decision you will be glad you did. Good Luck,
    Zenyatta

For all, Twilio only works in the USA and a few Area codes in Canada,

I tried a plugin and found it to be limiting with hardly any features. I stopped using it and since then the owner pof the plugin has sent e-mail announcing new features, but of course he charges you for the upgrades.

Honestly if you want to go the plugin route go ahead but as an active web application developer and wordpress developer I can tell you the horsepower isn't there. For $17 what can you expect, a gold mine?

I use twilio to take advantage of the call subscribe feature. Most people (potential subscribers) do not really understand the short code system. They hesitate to text a keyword to a 5 code number. By using Twilio, it only costs me $0.01 to make it easy for you to subscribe by phone. You simply dial 450-3586 (In my local community) If you are going to test this, you'll need to add the area code. (208) 450-3586. The minute you dial the number, you'll receive a confirmation text. From there, you can add them to your sms program or software. It's pretty convenient for local advertising. You can place an add in a local paper that says something like. "Get FREE local coupons and huge discounts from local businesses. Dial our AUTO-BOT 450-3586"
