How much could you sell a business for?

I was just pondering my possibilities, the routes that I could take once I fully build and launch my SMS business, and I was thinking about how much it could bring me if I sold it.

I plan to work the business until I can break $3,300 every month. That way after I put back for taxes I make about $3,000, my life goal.

What could a $36k a year business go for that requires no real work other than contacting businesses to sell the service (namely businesses who already use the service) and sending the coupons?

Business selling is totally depend upon your own interest and other things as well.Once you get something like good than you can sell your business good as well on good rate.

This is an unanswerable question. You want to start an SMS business, yet you most likely are just a reseller of a larger business (You can't really sell Reseller Accounts. Read the TOS). Your goal is $3,600 each month, which is not a lot of money (It's below the poverty line where I live). You don't have any employees, so you will have to offer assistance and training to anyone that purchases the business, raising expenses for you or the buyer (A downfall. People don't want to have their business slump while they learn the ropes).

Basically, you want to build a business for you. Then try to make a quick buck off it. Honestly, a $3,600 business isn't worth much to anyone other than the original owner. If you could sell the business, the clients must be told, and most will decide to go elsewhere due to new management.

If you only want $3,600 each month, my suggestion is to work with Affiliate Marketing. You can build a few websites, get traffic to them, and be making your $3,600 goal by the end of 2012 (Or faster if you know what your doing). If you decide to sell, you can flip the sites at flippa.com for 10x - 16x the monthly income of the site(s).

The work is extremely simple. Contact a business who could use the service, log in to the dashboard and send the text. I use a Wordpress plugin (Chad Wyatt's) so I can sell it if I buy another license for the new owner.

When it comes to SMS marketing there is no good or bad service. The formula for a good SMS service is quantity + price. If you have the biggest list and the best price, then you are the top dog. That is what I plan to have. I already have the best price, now I'm just building my list. Unless someone in this small town gets interested in SMS marketing and finds Chad Wyatt's plugin for Wordpress (and knows what they're doing) then no one can compete with my prices.

I've done affiliate marketing/SEO. In 2010 I was on page 1 in Google.co.uk for Cellulite cream keywords. I didn't make much at all. =/ And all the time I put into it was not paid off. I hate SEO and affiliate programs.

In 2010, also, my father black-hatted his way to #1 in Google (US, UK, and AUS) for Payday Loans. Started making 120k+ a month and moved off to the USVIs, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Then, Google nabbed his ass and he's broke now.

Even so, just an algorithm change could destroy my income with SEO and affiliate programs, even if I'm totally white hat. Not for me.

I feel like there would be lots of people willing to buy a business that makes 3,000+ with almost no work at all.

If your business has a website and has a backend (just makes things easier) etc you could usually sell it for 10-12+ months of income so in your case $30,000- 36,000+

Have you started selling the services? because "almost no work at all" is not a term used in freely in offline marketing.

I think you should record everything, and keep everyone here informed. We could all learn from your successes and failures. It would be a huge help to everyone, and you build credibility with your fellow warriors in case you ever decide to sell products of your own online.

P.S. I just want to let you know that I can't stop laughing, but deep down I feel extremely sad for you.

Thank you for that. And yes, it will have a site and backend.

And almost no work at all means that all they do is contact businesses that we have already worked with (or take incoming calls and emails to sell the service) and log in to send out the ad. That's all there is to it unless one would like to expand or sell to new businesses.

I have a thread where I am reporting everything I do and what happens.

Why would you feel sad for me? =(

Where i live you can do alot with $3300 a month. There are grown men and women working and earning only $7.25/hour. This is an income that i couldn't deal with. And when compared to $3300... the $3300 is extremely seductive. Good luck.

Yeah. I think wherever you go there are successful people and then there are also people who never made it anywhere and have to settle for 7.25/hr. I work for 7.75/hr right now, since I got a raise on Friday. But, although I don't mind being humble, I can't be this humble! I've never made more than 1,200 in a month. It's no way to live.

Larches, can I ask if you have already started doing this and had success or is this your idea?

I never ventured into the SMS route yet so I'm curious.

Well, the idea is common. Sell SMS marketing to local businesses. Anyone can do it! If you would like more information you can talk to me on Skype.

SMS marketing is very easy work and very profitable. I get at least one text every day from the local provider in my town. He charges $6 per 100 and his list has 4600 subscribers. So he makes $276 every time a business sends out an offer through his service. He profits $138 from every blast.

If I charged as much as him, I would profit $230 from every blast. But I plan to put him out of business by charging less.

Planning to start a business, just to sell it, IMO is a sure way to failure

3300 a month is more than you make right now, so why would you even think about selling it? So you sell it for 30k ( not alot of money in today's world) now you have no income again, back to working for 7.25

This all makes zero sense to me buddy, sorry!

A better plan : Build the business to 3300/month, than set new goal to double that, and keep going.

Thinking about selling should come AFTER you have established a thriving business, not before you have even started! And even then, why sell a money making business if you have the time to run it?

You need a set of clear goals you want out of this, and the reasoning behind them.

So far , the goals and reasoning are lacking sense.

Your thoughts on what this business require are dramatically scaled down. "Almost no work, just contacting the business to sell the service" shows how much research you have actually done.

There is so much more to any business than just the front end sales aspect. The only way you will realize whats involved, is to DO IT FIRST.

How hard is it to run Coca Cola, no real work other than just selling stores products right?!

    Come on man

I would focus on more immediate steps, such as generating the business and making the income, once you have that going, then look into your possibilities.

I understand looking at an end goal, this is good (I have one as well) now that I know that, I am learning to crawl, getting better at it everyday, then I will start walking, and before long i'll be sprinting!

My end goal is different, that is owning a business with employees, and just taking in a check, having managers, etc running everything, completely hands off.

Who knows, but when I get to that point, maybe I will sell it off
