Help on Offers & Selling Discount Cards

The fact that the High School has been doing this for a few years is a positive one. That means there's a market for such cards ! I'd consider contacting the school about a "Fall" promotion, too with your cards (if you can get enough of a margin) or simply offer each restaurant the opportunity to buy 100 to give out to their customers, building loyalty and trust while working to help each other out.

First and foremost Congratulations on the contracts and for taking action.

Have you read Dons other thread about employee rewards cards entered he sells them to companys to give out to their employees as Xmas gifts, or maybe you can contact your local boy/girl scouts and sell them wholesale, little leagues I even seen karate teams raising money maybe you can introduce them to something new, anyone who needs to raise money can benefit from these.

I think you should also maybe consider making certain restaurants exclusive to certain charities and running it by the owner, if you go that route, a owner might not want to help sponsor his kids rival team and he might also consider a better deal if its to raise money.

Oh and I would consider a few freebies to the local fire dept employees so they get exposure from hopefully family and friends but also the supporting businesses.

elchach, Thanks for the idea with discount card as Christmas gift for employee and as freebie. Might give each restaurant 10 or so cards each to use for cross promotion purposes.

you need to put more offers on the card for it to be a sellable item. The one I get with my Chamber membership has 29 offers on it. There is room for 30 actually. Get some decnet offers, but try to find the more popular restaurant and don't just stick with those. Think UPS store, FedEx store/Kinkos, oil changes, car wash...anything people do a fair amount of.

Pitch the fundraiser to any and all non-profits....can be a group, team, PTO, church...any group or non profit. Sell the thing for $20 and they get 50% of the profit. You actually don't even have to have them printed until you get a final count, or you can print them and let them "deliver" right at point of sale. Also COLLEGES...easy pickings.

Hope that helps. the more non profits you get too, the higher your sales will be. You should be able to sell a couple thousand of these 1 yr cards or more. That would be $20K in your pocket minus the small printing expense. If it is a decent sized city you could sell 5-10K cards...thats a good payday.

then you just need to do it in the next town....duplicate.

CharlieJones, Good idea to go after other types of businesses for discount card. Great information.

Saw a fundraising discount card company which sold cards as dinner & a movie, buy one pizza & get one free, and a restaurant card. Had to be a non-profit to buy cards from them and they sold them for $10 each.

Has anyone worked with these type of companies before?

I'll answer your questions one by one

1)Should I go after more restaurants/offers?
Definitely. the more offers the increase chances of conversions and sales. I prefer 25 offers per card.

2)Only put offers on cards that offer a significant discount?
Put all the offers. "the more the better". even if its just a 1% discount. A discount is a discount.

3)Where would you start selling these cards(businesses, flea markets) or some place else?

You can Wholesale these cards to companies. The companies can give these to employees as a bonus. You can also sell these cards to the restaurant where you got the discount. the restaurant can sell them for you.

4)How much would you sell card for? I'm thinking $10 each with discounts if you buy multiple cards.

It depends on the discount. a great technique is to add all the possible discounts then divide the total to get the cost of the card. $5 a card is ok. $10 is too much.

3) Go business to business...just walk in and tell the owner YOU have something their employees will;

I had a mock up of discount card I wanted to sell with different restaurants on card and with offers ranging from 10% to buy one get one free.

I show owner or manager the card and tell them these cards will be sold in their local area and will help drive customers to their restaurant. They don't incur any cost until card is presented to them for the discount a win for restaurant who might not have the customer otherwise, a win for for the customer who receives the discount, and a win for me or person who sells card and receives money for discount card.

This way the restaurant only pays for customers who are buying if the discount card is used.

But, I'm not seeing how the pizza joint is getting paid here, seeing your "Kard" is for 20 free pizzas.
From your #s (1,000 Kards * 20 pizzas/Kard), the pizza joint owner is to give away 20,000 pizzas over time?

I got your sample AFTER I created my card. I also like what Conrad did with his card. My next card will take inspiration from the best from both of yours. (Thanks!)

The cards finally came today - it seemed to take forever but now we know.

While we'll be selling the cards in the community, I thought that we might get a few online orders too. How? I'm imagining this scene: one mom tells another how she got 3 free pizzas with the card for her son's party. The second mom wants a card, but how can she get one? (sad music, zoom in on the unhappy mom's face). Then, they notice a web address is on the back of the card. (Everyone smiles and birds are chirping. All is well with the world.) And we get an order. lol

Since I had this domain name that was not being used, I'll put our unique discount cards there.

Great to see other people taking action with the same type of business. Your card looks great Raynay! I like the idea of the pizzas as the items to be punched or marked.

I also really like your brand of "Smart Deals" because if you decide to offer other types of discount cards you can do it through the same brand, same website, and people would see all the other cards you guys offer as well when they visit the site to find one card. And to have the website on the card itself is good exposure too.

I'm using a simple agreement with restaurant name and locations with offer they will honor. I have it signed and dated by owner or the manager (their title).

I thought xmas gift for employees was very good idea.

Will be using midasmans, Don Alm way instead as it is simple and straight forward.

Hey cuttingedge, I congratulate you on your bold initiative! That's all this is about. You had an idea and you didnt sit on it. I will advice you to find out how the schools get more businesses to put on their card and you could offer a better rate than them maybe? Also you could try and recruit as many businesses as possible to make your card more beefier.

mightydough, Thanks. Saw a high school card that had offers on front and back of card. Print was so small, I couldn't read it with magnifying glasses on so not sure if they have problems with card or not.

My idea was to have 6 or so restaurants with their logo on card, with discounts that would amount to twice as much as card would sell for, which could amount to hundreds of dollars or so if customer used card over course of one year, when card discount would end.

MidasMan09, Don Alm suggestion of selling Pizza kard with great offer of 20 free pizzas was a great idea and one I will try to sell to pizza places. This would probably work well with other restaurant offerings as well and will see what these restaurants have to say.

Pizza cards are the way to go and I know because I make at least $150 a day producing and selling them in my local area. It's a win/win for both the pizza shop and the person producing and selling them, because the pizza shop gets free advertsing and increased customers, which means more business and profits and the person selling the pizza cards makes a profit from each card they sell. I have tried making money with the multi business discount cards and never made close to what I make with pizza cards, as almost everyone likes and eats pizza, so it the perfect product to sell, even in a down economy.

I am going to start working on this. I plan on putting 15 discount ads on a 4" x 3&1/2" cards. I think more discount ads would be too small to read.

Hey Martin....Thanks for the picture of pizza card and the experience you had selling pizza cards vs multi business discount cards.

Met with 2 pizza restaurant owners today.

One was a nice pizza restaurant that mainly had customers coming into eat lunch and dinner. Other items were on the menu as it was a more up scale restaurant. Stated they would deliver but only large deliveries. They were not interested in pizza discount card.

Other pizza restaurant stated they wouldn't consider giving away 20 pizzas per card due to cost and loss of profit. Didn't like giving away any pizzas so I thanked them and left.

Questions:

How do you justify giving away 1,000 x 20 pizzas = 20,000 pizzas?

Do you suggest a 1 year time limit?

Are you receiving resistance to pizza card offer due to a weaker economy?

Are you going after privately owned or franchised pizza delivery only (no sit down pizza restaurants)?

First off any pizza shop that tells you they won't make a profit off a buy one pizza, get one free offer is full of **it, they just don't want to deal with you or don't want to try something new or out of their comfort zone.

The current pizza card I'm selling has no exp. date it good untill all 20 holes are punched, but the norm for a pizza card is a 1 year exp. date.

I work only with locally owned pizza shops as they need the business and are more open to my pizza card offer as they don't have the funds to advertise like the big franchised pizza shops.

The economy being down makes my pizza card business even more successful as everyone wants to save money and because people are not eating out as much pizza shops are even more interested in my pizza cards to draw in customers.

Haphiza, I saw one discount card in this area that had 28 offers on card, both front and back. Print was so small I couldn't read restaurants name or any offers.

I'm doing a discount card with far fewer offers, 6-10, and hopefully great discounts that will excite customers to buy card. Offers from 20% to buy one get one free.

The online printer I use to get my pizza cards printed cost me under $30 for 1,000 cards with delivery and under $60 for 5,000 cards with delivery.

Yeah definitely do the pizza cards, it's one of the methods I'm using now and it's received very well. I used to sell a multi discount card part time for another company and made decent money doing it, but I was the sales guy so it was all dependent on me. I'm using Martin's system now for the pizza cards and I haven't made a boatload of money yet, BUT I've made enough that I'm in profit already and I don't even have sales people selling for me yet.

  You could take this a huge step further by combining it with the Jobless Dad directory idea.
  
  Multiple types of discount cards, fundraising cards, gift cards etc.
  
  Sell access to the "members only discount website", then charge businesses monthly to be on it.
  
  You could turn this into a multiple six-figure business with the fund-raising aspect alone.
  
  In general, savvy business people really eat this up because most of the expense of getting a customer in this fashion is when the customer comes in and spends money. Most of their other marketing is the reverse of this, they pay money for ads and hope for the best.

In case this helps cuttingedge I'll post the discount card I'm using now as well. Looks like Martin's, but is customized to the pizza shop I'm working with. They only wanted to do 15 Buy1Get1s. Still works great. I position mine as a Community Appreciation Card and mainly working with non-profits right now. Will be hiring a sales team in the near future. The guy that customized my card is relatively inexpensive and has a quick turnaround. I can send his info if you'd like it.Attachment 10479

  All my discount cards are standard business card size 2" x 3.5", full color, double sided, UV coated, 16 pt. and round corners.

Get thread, thanks to everyone that has contributed. This seems like actionable content with some great ideas and twists I see some great ways to scale this up. Conrad, Martin, or Don could you please refer a good company where you get these cards printed? I haven't seen anyone mention a supplier in this whole thread. This thread is so helpful. I'm launching a local niche site focused on families with young children and this thread has given me the idea to create a discount card for families with babies and young children.

Has anyone tried this in other niches besides pizza/restaurants?
How do you determine how to price the card? Retail vs. wholesale?

Carla,

I have done a few different types of discount cards over the past 10 years, besides pizza discount cards, such as an auto repair discount card, a dry cleaners discount card, a movie rental discount card, a car wash discount card and a multi business discount card, but none of them have been as successful and as profitable as the pizza discount card for me.

I think your "Family $aver Discount Card" (that could be the name of your card) is a good idea.

I would focus on promoting your discount card for sale at daycare centers and schools, by offering the daycare or school x amount for each card they sell to the parents. You could provide them with a sales flyer that exsplains the benifits of your discount card with a picture of the discount card and how to purchase one.

Should I go after more restaurants/offers?

Only put offers on cards that offer a significant discount?

Where would you start selling these cards(businesses, flea markets) or some place else?

How much would you sell card for? I'm thinking $10 ea with discounts if you buy multiple cards.

I really appreciate the warrior forum and all the ideas and information that is exchanged here.

With pizza cards you only only promote one pizza shop, but if you want you can do a multi-business discount card and promote a varity of different businesses with discounted offers and sell that card. If you search threw this thread you will see that I have posted a picture of a sample pizza card and a sample of a multi-business card, so that will give you a better idea what they look like.
