Persuasion Power - Some People Have "It" , and Some People Dont.

Why is it that I can talk someone into giving me $300 to become a rep for me and go do my selling for me on commission... but some people cant even hire a person to sell for them offering an hourly wage?

I'll tell you what I think it is, and what Marlon Sandors thinks "It" is...

"Persuasion Power".

You have to be able to persuade others to believe with you, you have to be able to create faith in others.

You have to be able to "sell" your ideas.

There is no system in the world that will work if you cant sell yourself, but ALMOST ANY SYSTEM "will" work if you can. (Even polishing headlights...lol).

Whats the key? - Total enthusiasm and true authentic excitement. If you arent excited about your vision, then why not?

Why not recreate your model into one that excites you like CRAZY! Why not create a model that you CANT WAIT TO TELL PEOPLE ABOUT?

Get excited...or, rework your plan till it excites you! Natural enthusiasm is the short cut to persuasion power!

Hope this sets someone on fire and breaks them out of their shell!

SELL! SELL! SELL!

If you build it they will come, but when they get there you gotta PERSUADE THEM TO BE EXCITED WITH YOU!

When people are excited, things happen!

I would love to hear others thoughts on this... I think the ability to persuade is key to success.

Is it true that some have it and some dont - If so, what are some ways it can be developed?

I believe that everybody has it...it's just whether or not they believe they have it. You believe you have and so you do...if you do not have the confidence in what your selling you might as well not be selling.

I've trained a lot of sales people in my time and the successful people follow basic tactics: 1 - Learn the product 2 - Be confident in the product 3 - Ask for it

    Thanks for the post John,

I believe the word you are looking for is: Charisma

Charisma is the 'natural likability' or 'personal magnetism' which projects a sense of trust and knowledge. People want to be around one who is Charismatic, because they make them feel important and like they belong.

Charisma can be learned too - which is great because then you can turn it off and turn it on as needed. My girlfriend hates it

I suggest reading a few books on the topic - I know Tony Alassandra has written several. And he's available on amazon....

    Great points John, ....

Around 1985 I went to my first Zig Ziglar seminar in a hotel meeting room in Dallas Tx...

He impressed, as I expected him to, but he said something that day that stuck with me all these years: He said, in his smooth southern drawl, "Selling is nothing more than the ethical transfer of enthusiasm."

It's a perfect definition!...simple, clean and completely true. Like you, I've worked with a lot of sales people (been selling since I'm 16 years old. which is a long time ago)..

...and I have seen your statement proved out over and over again:

"There is no system in the world that will work if you can't sell yourself, but ALMOST ANY SYSTEM "will" work if you can.

100% True. Has never changed. Never will change.

Most people understand so little of what real selling is, they don't consciously recognize it, but will still buy from the few who know how to do it.

I've seen new wet-behind-the-ears salesmen outdo veterans, simply because they were able to transfer their own enthusiasm to the customers....a 'burned out' salesman is worse than no-salesman at all when it comes to production.

As far as the ability to persuade being key to success, you're right - it's everything.
Unfortunately, sales and selling has been so maligned by the media over the years, that many come to it only as a last resort.

They figure, ..."Well, I've tried everything else, I may as well try sales..."

...ironically, they usually leave the one thing that could almost single-handidly carry them across the goal line ...they leave it at the door: THEIR ENTHUSIASM.

Getting results in selling is about 3 things: Basic Skills, Discipline and Enthusiasm.
....Remove any one of those, and it shows up in production.

I could talk about this for hours. lol!

Bruce that is so true. I have alot of respect for Zig, my husband did a course with him many years ago and he has excelled in sales ever since.

When he came on board with my business, I was of the mindset 'Sell 'em cheap" cost that's what people want - and I was totally wrong. My husband was outselling me at 5 times the price. Really made you stop and take stock of things.

And realise that to maximise productivity, he should deal with clients and I should deal with everything else.. !

I was trained to be an "engineer"....NOT trying to "sell" anything to anyone.

However...when I discovered that the man I replaced (at my Corporate j.o.b.)....was fired a year BEFORE his Retirement Rights set in....I decided then and there....to HUNT for a different career.

A buddy suggested I go to a Dale Carnegie Sales Seminar. At this meeting I learned that "US" humans are ALWAYS "SELLING"! We have to "Sell" ourselves to our girlfriends.....and our future wives....and....to our Future employers!

        So....Carnegie's Basic Formula was (and still is);

Grab their ATTENTION - by giving "them" a Reason to Listen to you
Get their INTEREST - by appealing to THEIR self-interest
Build their DESIRE to WANT what you're offering by "Painting Word Pictures" of your prospects using and enjoying the BENEFITS of what you're selling
CLOSE the sale - by "Assuming" they've bought by whipping out your Order Form and begin writing. Let your prospect "stop" you with an "objection". Answer the objection and continue writing.
Or....by getting "Small Agreements" up to the Final (Mr Prospect, which color appeals to you the most? What Demographic are you trying to reach?...etc)

I started a "Home Burglar Alarm" biz with these basics and went on to have 17 employees and the largest Security Biz in the North Shore of Chgo.

And....something weird I discovered when I began hiring and training Sales People; When some of the these "sales" people reached an income level they had in former years (ex: $30,000/yr)....they Stopped Selling...as if they had hit an invisible "Mental Barrier"!

It was really strange....whether their top income in previous years was $25,000 or $50,000. When they hit that previous Top Income....they quit selling as if something told them they "didn't deserve" a better income level.

          Don,
I noticed this so many times with salespeople and it always frustrated me. I would watch as some people worked just hard enough to earn their $60K or so per year, while others around them were doubling or tripling that amount. I decided that each person has their own comfort zone and most will just stay in it.

hey John great timing with this thread, Im pitching for some (to me) serious investment in a couple days time to 4 millionaires over here in UK (No its not Dragons Den but a local version of it) , its still selling, even more so, of myself , my passion and ideas .
This has helped me focus on the fact theyll be investing in me and not my profit and loss forecast etc , to be excited, enthusiastic and hugely positive about my future plans and potential and communicate that to them fully is so much more important than dotting all the I's and crossing every T

    @ Don

    CLASSIC!

    I love it.

I remember that "Just whip out your receipt book and start writing it up..."!

    lol.

At first its so hard to conceive of being that bold... but later its just the "way" you do it!

    Nice reminder! Thanks.
