Wordpress Theme for Offliners - Want a Free Copy?

Hey offliners,

I'm in the process of creating an "offline friendly" wordpress theme. In the past, I've mostly done "online" marketing type themes.

Here's the thing, those of you who offer advice/suggestions, I'd like to give a free copy of my theme (developer's license) for free.

Now, I'm sure many of you simply use either:

- free themes
- woo themes
- studio press
- elegant themes
- themeforest
- etc.

And that's fine. But, most theme developers don't provide the most basic of offline needs such as a form on the homepage (or sidebar), place to put a phone number (other than a simple phone number in the header) etc.

Here are but a few of the things I'm thinking about:

- Place to put the phone number prominently (header and/or sidebar)
- Form to collect leads (with the ability to send you a CC so you can monitor the success of your clients' lead gathering)
- Google map (this is easy, can be a simple plugin)
- Image slider ??
- Coupon displayed on homepage/sidebar (or at least the option to)

Now, the above bits are pretty standard I'd say but the main themes I've seen online or even here on WF either don't offer those or charge crazy prices like $250+ for a developer license etc. and STILL don't offer the best bits...(just my opinion).

So, what would you guys like to see? What type of functionality or flexibility? I'm thinking more along the lines of a theme that would cater to those selling free, low-cost, mid-range-cost sites....obviously bespoke sites wouldn't use a template (per se).

Thanks and I look forward to your replies.

Again, if you offer ideas that make sense, you'll get a free (developer rights) copy.

Cheers

Scott

  • a movable block/widget for contact info with options to make it the contact info for the business, or an opt-in form

    - easily updatable header area
    -slider areas that make sense
    - provide adequate documentation on how to do basic tasks (for instance, elegant themes look great but their documentation and support sucks)
    - simple color changer tools
plug n play basic features such as background images for headers, body, site itself

  • Here are just a few suggestions.
    1. You mention a form to contact leads. it needs to be on all pages.
    2. There have been some WSO's for these plugins, but a Daily Deal (Groupon like plugin) and one that picks up reviews from at least several review sites would be awesome.
    3. Have a slider that would rotate the testimonials or short bios about employees would make it more personable and make the users trust the company more.
    4. On a sidebar have a list of the last 5 blog posts or comments and last 5 tweets.
    5. It can detect visitors from mobile devices and lead them to a mobile landing page.
    6. Can publish contact that will post to facebook or twitter.

    • How do you create mobile apps for a wordpress site so that people can see them on iphone or droid systems?
  • The ability to easily change and adapt theme (basically make the layout look different for each client) is something I've struggled to find in an offline theme. I don't want to sell websites to my local clients and they all basically look the same.

    Facebook Page Option
Mobile Theme option, where it takes the content from the desktop theme and automatically formats for mobile, without the need to add/edit information in a separate "mobile theme" area.

  • Some nice suggestions so far...A theme that looks good on both a website and integrates nicely on a mobile phone would be great - maybe a new type of opt-in call to action integrated into the copy block that looks like a smartphone text screen...

I'm not sure if all music sites do this, because frankly I don't go to a lot of Musician's sites - but I was checking out the Hank Williams Jr. site regarding a free download of a new song he wrote today...

And I just liked the easy way the download opt-in acted...it was kind of all self contained - you opt-in, same small screen says it's in your email "thanks" - no autoresponder page.

then it brings up the social sites and has a nice easy link to them...all 1 shot you get 4 links to the customer...

it's smooth but not overly pushy...like enter name/email and it does the rest...

Maybe have a look at it - see if it could work for you...

    • Would it be possible to put in a "live chat" box? A direct response mechanism that says "speak to us now" (in addition to the phone number). Given that this type of website would be for local businesses to attract local customers the ability to chat "live" with existing and potential customers may be a differentiator. Granted that means that the chat needs to be monitored, but perhaps you could configure it so that if no-one is available right now or a message is sent after hours, then the owner or manager could be alerted by mobile or email. Look forward to seeing your theme.

    • the owner or manager could be alerted by mobile or email. Look forward to seeing your theme.
    • SMS is an obvious element that would appeal to many WP marketers.

An above the fold "slider" would also be a strong addition with or w/out having to use a short code plug-in to modify it.
  • Months ago, I started working with a developer trying to do something similar. I had a big call to action arrow that pointed toward an opt-in box, but could have been a phone number just as easily. Then in the control panel, I could switch between a service picture, medical picture, or business picture. This pic was in the middle (roughly) of the page. Each pic could also be customized so that I could put the business name on the service van for example.

I know there are plugins specifically for this now, but a Facebook page maker option that could be built in or bundled would be awesome so that the business could create/update their FB fan page easily.

Extensible is the key. Working with some good themes lately, I would highly suggest integrating some good short codes to do a variety of things: special text boxes, buttons, layouts. The themes with these I have found to be of the most use to me when creating new "varieties" of the theme. Some sort of back end control panel within the WP control panel with all the options is ideal, too.

Lastly, be sure to include page templates! Things like Contact Page, Location/Map, and other typical pages that you could have pre-built page templates so that there is less work to do.

    Just my $0.02.

    • And now for something a little different .. lol

Still in keeping with offline, but possibly an additional theme.

I have a site at NorthallertonAds.co.uk that is a business directory script (no longer sold)
It's OK - but would be better these days if it were a WP theme.

The idea of the usage is mainly as a 'foot in the door' technique (naturally if someone happens across the site it may make a sale of advertising space... but it is very limited)

What I'd love is a theme where the categories are an A-Z of local business similar to the ones on my Northallerton Ads site.
      BUT
It would be cool to have a free listing where a business can list their site free in exchange for their email address so we can contact them to offer more services.
even better if it could then offer an advanced listing with html, graphic and detailed description etc. - possibly some rotating ad banners etc.

The idea would be that a local client could be searching for a local business and land on the site to a fixed front page - telling them to pick the type of business they are looking for and browse to connect to them.

For business owners - they would click a link to see how to add their business, enter an email address, and see the upsell to the advanced listing,

And the overall purpose would be to link to our main sites offering our services.

Then we could canvass local business and offer a free ad to get our 'foot in the door' - after giving a free advanced listing or including an advanced listing as a bonus, we could sell them on our other services.

Therefore the theme would need to be easy to get on page one for local searches to show our expertise and make the local business want to have a listing, and we could take it from there

      Does that all make sense?

(OH - and the theme could be a good seller to the offline niche as an easier way of contacting local business to pitch our services.... if I knew how I would develop such a theme myself and have it as a wso...lol)

Feel free to contact me if this description isn't clear. I know there are business directory themes available - but I've not seen one that does what I'd like as yet.

      Regards
      Randy

  • hmm...

    Template
    -Phone number, Header / side
    -Form, side bar / footer
-address information, footer / side bar
    -Google maps, sidebar
-Social media buttons, side bar / footer

    Homepage
-Image Slider, Header front page. (no idea why but most biz owners are crazy about this.

    Others
    -shopping cart, (theme? plugin?)

Make all the following easily 'editable' and you have a winner for biz owners.

  • I think any new theme for offline world these days would need to have the ability to create a mobile and facebook version of the web site so your clients presence is the same everywhere.

I'm not sure if this is necessary anymore, but a hcard/vcard in the coding for local results.

Make the header and sidebars resizable.

    Have multiple layouts.

    Lot of good suggestions here.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • For me the most important stuff would be
    - as much as possible above the fold
    - At least one CTA widget and preferably more
    - ability to put CTA widgets on every page
    - a popout CTA that isn't intrusive?
    - Google Maps integration
    - ability to autoplay video upon landing
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I think it's been said above, and not that this is what you meant, but making the page work in Facebook and possibly mobile (although I'm not yet completely convinced it's still not better to have a html mobile version) as well.

I would like to see prominent social "web 2.0"ish icons up top as well. Someone above mentioned an arrow? I like the idea of the sidebar showing an optin box with the width, and some graphics making it prominent as well to focus on a fun and friendly feel for signups to generate leads for the business.

I've always wanted a better way to get videos to look like they were made to be where they were and not just "squeezed" in some widget or elsewhere. I'm big on customer testimonials in videos and something up front would be nice, above the fold. Although I could be wrong and that could look ugly too, I've just wanted to play with it more.

Lastly, the overall feel that I'd like to see would be uncluttered, and draw the eye to the important direct response mechanisms on the page. I know it's subtle, but that's just my $0.02 as well.

And I'd love to have the rights to your theme. It's gotta be good if you're here...
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • How about making it Fluid Width, so it takes up more than 1/3rd of the screen.

    • A couple things that would really make this or any theme rock are:

A way to change colors using a color slider. The background, header etc.

The ability to easily specify the header height

      Different page layouts

      Sales page / Squeeze page

      A few different navigation styles

Testimonial widget that would scroll through the different testimonials

Preloaded templates that could easily be changed

  • A theme with a live agent box embedded into the homepage. Actual person, live webcam doodad.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • This may be too obvious but I didn't see it mentioned yet so I'll say it - something that is very well SEO optimized and has SEO plugins so it can quickly be ranked. Also -

    - easy to customize the look and feel of it
    - easy to add video
    - easy to put things where they need to be for someone who is not a Wordpress expert (I'm talking about customizing the sidebar, navigation, header, etc.) Something where it's simple and easy to change things like that without messing with the code.
    - Facebook, Twitter, etc. integration.
    - Could have a variety of generic header graphic templates to choose from for various offline business niches, that could be easily customized if someone wants to make it specific to their business / client's business.
    - Make it easy to quickly add an opt-in form via Aweber, getresponse, etc.
    - Have coupon templates / images that can be quickly plugged in above the opt-in form. These would be common bribes to influence people to sign up to the client's mailing list, that could be applicable to nearly any business - such as: Sign up and receive 20% off or Instant $50 off rebate when you sign up for our mailing list, etc. things of that nature.

    • I have been looking all over for a collection of header images or graphics to be used for offline niches. I've seen offerings of 5 or 10 different graphics but usually they are cheesy aren't in the niche I want to target.

If you could produce 50 header images for the most profitable home service industries and other popular offline local business niches that could be easily interchanged, I would be ecstatic!

  • Wow.. tons of great suggestions.... now I want them all. But my biggest need is a theme that easily converts to mobile and has links to social media.
  • How about good niche graphics with the themes plumber, lawyer, dentist, etc
    • [1] reply
    • Yes, that's definitely something I plan to add. Most themes/templates you see on WF don't mention the rights to images AREN'T transferrable to buyers, let alone when they sell those blogs/templates to customers/clients (think FB templates, etc.)

I've found a resource of a large collection of decent images that would help me create such graphics and I've confirmed with the owner I can use them in templates to sell (and even provide resale rights to) but I'm guarding that resource for now lol.

      Thanks again for the suggestions.

This theme is going to cost me a small fortune but sounds like it will be killer when done!

  • The ability to add background image that does not scroll and option to change background color.

    Customizable header image.

Automatic creation of separate mobile optimized site pages supported by the detection of mobile visitors.

    Widget enabled sidebar(duh!)
option to put QR code in sidebar widget.

    Review form/comment area.
  • Lot's off great advice

I think that some of the features should not be packed into the homepage, simply to make the design lighter and more appealing.

Example, the Google Maps. A simple link is enough which some can click and a popup window with the map opens for this info. No need to take space on the homepage.

    Same for an opt in.

For the opt In I like the popups which stay at the side as a thin line and open or popup after a while. But if you close them they will not disappear and stay, even if you scroll the page.

    Here's an example http://spyrestudios.com/demos/sliding-panel-fixed/

I've seen those also with the social icon's to Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. They look very nice by the way

  • Have the ability to call the height and width of the header, "either left or right justified or centered" and the ability to call the height and width of the sidebars and/or columns.

I can give you a few web sites that have some of these abilities already, but none have them all without knowing how to edit the code.

  • Hi Promo Guy, You got some really good ideas already. I really believe that a plugin that would redirect the person to a mobile site e.g. iphone/droid would be great. Also we all know how important video is, if you can have a sript, plugin, or spot for a youtube or jwplayer, etc. would be great. Header, navigation under header, copy flush left 3/4 of the way over in one column and flush right a video that would be used for promo video. I would love to review a copy and give further ideas. Good Luck, Neil

    • I'm pretty late to the party, but I've read through this and would just like to reiterate: video, video, video.

I've looked for than a few times for a theme that would allow me to place a video and opt in above the fold, side by side. Most of the other ideas - header placement, social networking widget, etc. are great - but video next to opt in form, above the fold, would be my biggies.
  • You have a lot of great stuff here. My list would be.

    - Slider
    - Call me button
    - Easy video embed without using youtube
    - Social media slider on left or right border
    - Easy opt-in box or contact form on home page
    - Mobile ready
    - Easy to change to fit clients needs

Thanks for taking on this project and I would love a copy when your done, lol.
  • I would like to see a theme that has the following functions:
    - Automically generate QR codes (like the WP Local Mobile + Qr Code + Social Theme)
    - Facebook Comment
    - Clean Layout & Straight to The Point
    - Portfolio developed into a menu/catalog (template)

    • Thanks DT, I see what you're saying. Would love to see some samples if you can PM them to me. My only concern with setting width/height of header is needing the graphics to fit according to the size. Some folks know Photoshop or outsource while others can't do graphics to save their life lol. But, I would like to check out your examples so feel free to PM

      Cheers

Yeah, I think redirection isn't terribly difficult to do (either as a plugin or built-in) but I'm still thinking about the layout of the mobile site. For example, simple html type sites tend to render fast, validate, etc. and there are several mobile plugins out there but don't validate all that great due to using .png images, javascript, etc.

I know it's not all about validation but from my research with mobile sites, the simpler the better. I'm open to what you guys think though.

If a plugin redirects to say a "simple" html style mobile site, what would people like to see? Posts, pages? Or, the ability to control the types of pages that are created? In other words, mobile plugins (from what I've seen) take posts, pages, etc. to create the mobile "theme" but mobile sites IMO are (or can be) their own unique little sites....if that makes sense.

Anyway, the easiest thing is to show posts, pages, tags, whatever but the ideal IMO is to show a unique mobile site...but the latter would take more time to create.

Yeah, I'm thinking a video + optin as a "page template". You then get into being compatible with most autoresponders.

      Definitely above the fold

I've seen that plugin and it looks cool. Click to call pretty much means skype only right? I would think that could be incorporated without a plugin but may take a look at it to see what else it offers.

      - Slider(s) - check
      - call me button - if by that you mean skype - check
      - easy video embed - do you mean flowplayer or vimeo etc.? I think flowplayer like on optimize press would be good. Yes?
      - contact form on the homepage (and option to have always in sidebar) - check. Autoresponder would mean working with multiple popular services out there. Not sure if a plugin would be good for this but I like the idea of it being built-in.
      - Mobile ready - check
      - Easy to change/fit - I would think multiple page templates is the best way to go or...eventually creating child themes..or both

      Thanks for the suggestions

Yeah, I'm thinking of built-in QR code generator that most likely creates a shortcode. Facebook comments sounds great. Some of these can be accomplished by plugins and while I'm all for minimizing the amount of plugins in any site, I'll have to think about if some plugins are best for certain functions. What do you guys think?

Yes to clean layout - totally agree. Portfolio page template is where I'm leaning.

Thanks again folks. This could easily turn into a monster of a theme lol but, I love the potential.

      Scott
  • What ever you develop, please MSG me when done, I think I'll want to buy it.
  • Hi,
I have bought a number of themes but usually find that these are not suitable for my offline clients & my biggest problem is that there is almost always a) No proper documentation and/or user guides for the theme and b) ZERO SUPPORT for any of the themes that are being sold on WF.
From a usage point of view: I usually find that the themes I buy form WF include a slider but for many of my offline clients there is simply no need for a slider and then I find that I simply cannot turn the slider function off or I cannot modify the slider (or this requires skills I don't have which causes major delays)
For example, I am presently trying to design a site for a local doctor who specializes in skin cancer treatments. In this case I am looking for a simple & easily customizable theme and I doubt if such a theme would even require sliders. I just cant find anything I like since it seems most themes have huge sliders that cannot be turned off or require technical skills so I am a bit stuck!
    I hope this helps

    I hope this helps
    • [2] replies
    • I sure will, still putting it all together but I think it'll be pretty powerful when finished

      Hi Stephen, I hear ya!

I know a lot of themes, especially those on sites like ThemeForest, have multiple sliders and you're right, sometimes sliders simply aren't appropriate. However, most themes I've seen or purchased myself that have sliders usually come by way of Page Templates which allow you to "turn off" the slider by picking "static image" type page templates.

Page templates should give multiple layout options meaning template #1 could have a Nivo slider, template #2 maybe a simple slider, #3 a video/optin form option, #4 static image, #5 no image, etc.

If themes don't give you these "standard" options or ability to turn off sliders, etc. then you're right, that's no good.

Also, I plan to create "simple" layouts too because sometimes you just need a straightforward layout: header, content left (or right), lead capture form, etc. and not all the ridiculous bells and whistles that may be visually appealing but unnecessary.

Anyway, thanks for mentioning your thoughts

      Cheers

  • It sounds like it has the potential to really be a beast of a theme in terms of availability of features.

That said, I gotta be honest, I promise I won't think poorly of you when you are so, so mean to others because you gift me a dev. license first over everyone else on this thread, making many have to wait.

I understand that me being so cool means you just have to move me up the queue.

  • A widget to place all of the citation elements on every page (name, address, phone number, website, email address) would be nice.

    • I didn't read everyone's posts, so I "might" be duplicating here, but here's my thoughts:

      1) Absolutely PLEASE make it mobile friendly! (I know WP3.03 is going to do away with alternate theme requirements for mobile friendly, but in the meantime it would be nice as a standard feature).

      2) Ability to turn on OR off any of the features you stated (i.e., "some" don't want a form, others do, some DO want to allow places for ads, others don't - but many of those themes don't "truly" let you turn them off) I do think its critical to have an opt in form, so I give you huge credit for wanting to do this.

I've used a few of those different companies, so I agree with the hassles.

Let me know when you have it done - many of us would love this.

  • Two things - the ability to have a jquery slider and sidebar for the homepage. Lots of themes give you a slider but you cant have a sidebar as well.

You mentioned coupons, but just make them well designed. Printable, bar codes. dotted lines etc.

Incorporate YouTube API in theme build as well.
  • Hi Scott,
I think your theme should have the following:

1.The phone number should be on the header unless the user wants it otherwise. It should be one of the first things a visitor sees.

2.The optin form should be on the right in the sidebar just below the header.

3.Image slider just below the header and navigation will be brilliant. Why?I hear you ask.Because the changing slider images will cause visitors to pay attention to the information on the slider.

4.A Gallery page template would be ideal for businesses like photographers and florists who would like to display their products in a gallery.

Wishing all the best with your project.
  • Hey Scott,

Would definitely be interested in a very simple, professional looking theme that I could set up for my clients fairly quickly. (low to mid range price tag)

Definitely an image gallery and is nice one the main page doesn't have to scroll.

Looking forward to see what you come up with as I'm definitely looking for a simple solution.

    Shawn
  • I've seen a lot of themes with a slider and then three or four feature boxes, and they're very stylish. However, there isn't really a place on the front page to put an opt in box. Also, I'd love some place to show the latest articles or blog posts, maybe below the feature boxes, or on the right in a sidebar..

    • Thanks mate, will let you know!

Good point about slider + sidebar. A couple folks have kindly sent PMs showing themes that are very interesting. One of the main things I'm hearing is the ability to add/delete/turn on/turn off features (sliders, optin forms, videos) etc. so I'm really liking the ability to offer those types of features.

      Coupons

      - printable - yes
      - bar codes - will consider how to do this one (or did you mean qr codes?)
      - dotted lines - yes (I've got a few ideas)

      Cheers

      1) Yes - should be prominent for sure!
      2) Yes - would also like to give a few ways/places to use optin (header, sidebar, etc.)
      3) Yes - agree
      4) Yes - definitely a portfolio/gallery page

      Many thanks

Thanks Shawn, I agree with the ability to create simple/professional looking themes too. I'm going to marry the ability to create a custom theme but also a simple theme too...I feel that's very important.

I like the idea of a main page that doesn't scroll too

      Cheers

Thanks Audrey, good points. I also got your PM which was helpful.

The ideas you guys have are great and the functionality of the theme is evolving along nicely. My goal is to create something that is robust enough to create a unique theme each time but simple enough to get a site up and running quickly. Hope that makes sense.

Will be working on it this weekend!

      Cheers everyone
    • Hi,

I noticed some people mentioned making a mobile friendly version.

Google for "responsive wordpress themes" for some ideas of the way a wordpress site can be programmed to display on any size screen from desktop on down to small smartphones. I like the idea since you don't have to maintain a separate mobile version of your site.

    • have the option in header click to call or click to request a call to support advanced ppc conversion tracking!
    • I think most of what I wanted to add is already covered - but hey - just in case.
Adjustable content similar to that of the 2010 weaver theme.
It's very important for people who don't have .css or .php
knowledge to be able to simply tick boxes, update and then
      see the intended/desired result.

Yes a nice simple form on the right hand side would be
a brilliant feature and as already mentioned I think it's important
that this contact form shows up on the right hand sidebar on
      every single page.

I agree that it should be able to dectect a request from a mobile
page and push that request to a mobile version of the site. This
is becoming more and more important.

It would be great if it was easy to insert and position images other
than just align left, center, right etc.

Overall - a theme that is easy to customize (similar to the tick a box and you're done Weaver themes) would be absolutely fantastic.
    • Well this sounds like it could be a killer theme!

So it is going to be really hard to add anything that someone has not already mentioned.

Scrolling testimonials, I know this can be added through plugins but the more versatile the theme is then the less need to overload it with plugins.

A more personal about us page show casing all staff and a possible employer of the month feature for the business. Staff moral is really important within a local business, well any business

Of course mobile ready and an optin form that can be easily customized to each individual client.

Also the theme to be very easy to customize so it would not look to similar to each client you create sites for.

Usual integration to social sites and possible easy to take the theme and create a Facebook Fanpage and Google + page for the business

Looking forward to seeing this in action!

    • Hi Scott,

How about an option to "copy" and then "re-create" the entire Blog for another demographic location? Example: I create a Blog for a Local CPA in Cleveland and then I want to re-create the same blog structure for another location to include Plug-Ins and all the basic development?

It has been such a task to create a good quality Blog with a great Theme and then have to worry about a total re-creation after putting all the pieces together and in place to create another niche blog.

I truly believe that creating a Theme this way would allow for a great "Demo Blog" too for alternative locations.

  • A scrolling widget in the sidebar for customer testomonials
A variety of pre set page templates
Love the idea that others have mentioned of a "live chat type option"
and a forum for users to echange ideas and troubleshoot

    • I like the idea of a Gallery page template as someone else suggested, florists, photographers, wedding planners, restaurants would like something like this but there are other offline business that would like a feature like this.

The ability to add a dropdown menu within a page for product sizes, styles, quantities etc for when people are ordering

I would also like the autoresponder to be included, there is a plugin that will do this and everything is then controlled from the dashboard. The code can be added to any post/page and there is a widget with the optin form already set up. Even if it is a plugin that allows the option to use or not but is already there.

I have a service where I offer the business to update their clients in the autoresponder and send the broadcasts, messages to their lists and this is somewhere they can see for themselves if they choose to use or learn how to use the features of this autoresponder. I also offer a service where I show them how to take care of their sites themselves. So simpler and less complicated options, clean looking site, not busy where they get confused with too much to take in at once and finish up clicking off.

I would also like a feature that would automatically resize the images to where they are to go, but if not all of them at least the header.

Thank you for offering this, a lot of my wishlist have already been asked for so I won't repeat them.

      Cheers and thanks again.

      Carmel
  • Wow - this looks like a great project that will benefit so many looking for an all-in-one solution for local marketing sites! Though, I think that trying to incorporate ALL the features suggested could end up being a coding/support nightmare for you.

The ability to keep things clean, simple, and attractive, and easily edit elements, whether for a hair salon or a plumber. I notice even Google has gotten away from the "gel" button look, and going for clean, flat, simple color schemes. The visual on the previous post sums up a great layout where widgets can be placed for multiple uses when needed - or not.

The ability to change the overall colors in the site, without having to hack the css would be great. A slider that doesn't have to take up the entire width of the page option.

And, of course, incorporating mobile and Facebook in some fashion seems to be on everyone's list.

I look forward to seeing the result - and asking up to pay a little something for your efforts on our behalf shouldn't be out of the question ;-)

  • I use studiopress themes and my biggest struggles are listed below.

    1. Easy way to add and change header images including size.
    2. A prominent spot to add phone number and call to action.
    3. Easy way to change footer information and links
    4. An above the fold spot to add an opt-in box and maybe video.
    5. An easy way to change background colors and template layout.

    Thanks
    Patrick
  • Suggestion for your theme... How about a theme that has a way to make the theme work for a number of days, (or months) then expire and revert to a "dummy " theme.

I would like to customize the theme for a local business (Springfield Dentist) for example, then give it to them for a specified number of days so they can try it to see how much more business & clients it generates for them. At the specified time (which could be set in the themes control panel), the theme would no longer show their custom design, but a generic theme instead. The business would be encouraged to not let this happen, and would be willing to continue to use the theme. We could charge a monthly recurring price for the theme, or a one off price to remove the "expired" restriction.

Also would like to see an SMS plug-in incorproated into the theme

Looking forward to getting a copy of your finished theme...
    Scott
  • So many great ideas!
    Hard to add even one.
    But let me try.

Warning message just after clicking the update to the most recent wordpress version.

the warning message should be something like, " Do you want to backup or clone before proceed".

    Thanks

  • I would like a free copy, so far it sounds like everyone here has very good suggestions. Did someone mention a social media function to update them all at once ?
    • [1] reply
    • Good thread.

A responsive theme like Yoko and others that auto detect the user device and adjusts to fit mobiles and tablets. This seems to be a much simpler way for a webmaster or small business owner to build blogs on their own instead of having to build a separate mobile site.

I also like the idea of being able to automatically build a Fanpage.

      A "Push to Call" feature.

      QR codes.

      Coupons.
  • [DELETED]
  • what about putting something in the theme to attract businesses as paying clients. For example, a page template optimized to transmit the message "we are ranked #1 for poodle groomers in Fargo, ND. Wouldn't you like to lease this web address?"
    • [2] replies
    • Wow. So many wonderful ideas provided! Are you sorry you asked?

My only suggestion is that the theme be "idiot-proof." I'm afraid that if you load it up with all those features, it may get pretty complicated.

I am not a web designer, so I'd like super-easy, push-button, fill-in-the-blank functionality with simple instructions that don't make me think and yet produce spectacular results. For instance, when I upload a graphic, I want that graphic to be automatically sized by the theme to fit the place I want to stick it... whether it's a header, banner, or photo within a post.

Basically, I want the theme to read my mind and know what I want without me having to tell it.

Is that too much to ask?

Good luck! I hope this project doesn't drive you insane!
    • Yes, I do like that idea. I'm even thinking of certain layouts pre-designed (for speed) that would allow for simple lead collecting as in your example. Thanks for the link.

Thanks Karen. I'm pretty familiar with "responsive design" and as someone mentioned here, there are some frameworks with responsive layouts built-in. I'll absolutely be looking at responsive CSS but am still deciding if I use HTML5/CSS3 or not. But I agree, not having to have separate themes/plugins to create mobile/FB friendly layouts would be great and is part of my plan.

Not sure what you're asking frisbee but mobile layouts can be done a number of ways.

      Scrolling testimonials - check
      pre-set templates - check

Forum and live chat I think would be best perhaps as plugins. I think that would add too much code where as plugins could do the job much better IMO but I'll certainly consider everything!

Agree with a gallery template but also with the option to turn it off. Will look into how this would translate onto a mobile version. I've got ideas

For dropdown menu, this could be added using custom taxonomies I reckon. Still deciding on adding an ecommerce option as again, there are many great plugins that do that but again, will consider it for sure!

Agree about simpler, less complicated options if training a client to run the site themselves. I think the ability to "hide" certain features from when the client logs in may be good, not sure just yet. Again, I've got ideas.

Agree as well with the ability to resize header and images.

      Thanks for the suggestions!

Can you explain more what you mean? Thanks

Clicking to call in header I assume you mean using skype. For the mobile version, that's an easy one!

Not sure what you mean by "support advanced ppc conversion tracking!"

I totally agree Michael and at the moment, as I consider certain options, I'm deciding what I think would be "overkill" and what would be "essential". I also agree that keeping things clean, simple, attractive and easily editable is right on!

I've been using Wordpress for years and those themes with 1000 theme options to me is overkill and I personally don't like them even though I can use most of them myself (or hand-code those that don't do what I want) so I know what you're saying. I envisage something much more intuitive and visual but the coding behind the scenes would need to be robust.

Changing colors (links, bg, header, nav menu(s), widget titles, etc.) - check

Regarding FB and mobile, I think the most obvious answer is a responsive layout.

      Thanks Patrick

      1) definitely a must
      2) absolutely!
      3) agree - I have Genesis and love it but needing a plugin to change footer links seems overkill
      4) yep - agree on both.
      5) yep - agree on those two as well

      Cheers

Hmm...interesting idea Scott. Not sure about it though, sounds more like a plugin idea to be honest as it would be a temporary solution. Best thing probably would be to do it manually and since you'd control the theme anyway (I assume) then in a few days email/call them to say "time's up" and go in and de-activate the theme....not even delete it...then if they agree, re-activate.

I do like the idea, it's interesting, but not sure if there would be a big enough demand for such a function. You could get a plugin coded for probably a couple hundred bucks to do that.

A few have mentioned SMS. Not sure if this would mean using a paid service or to have the SMS work within the theme itself like I believe some plugin offered here as a WSO??

Nice idea Juan. Will consider it. Again, there are a few plugins out there worth the purchase to do backups. I would think most offliners already do backups for their clients???

      Social media for sure

      QR codes - check
      Coupons - check
Build a fanpage - check (that's the plan anyway - got some ideas)

Thanks for the link to Yoko. I checked it out and checking the source code, whilst most of the html/css is different, it sure looks like it might have been built on the whiteboardframework that someone mentioned.

Both Yoko and Whiteboard are built with HTML5/CSS3 and while I love them both, I'm still on the fence about HTML5 at the moment. Will definitely think about it though. The biggest thing for me is the responsive layouts but again, if you have a big image (ie header) that's say 200KB and a mobile phone has to first call that big image then the CSS reduces its size, not only will it fail validation (not that validation is uber important but it's a good guide), but it can affect those mobiles (even smart phones) with a weak signal or limited download capabilities before getting charged.

Resizing a desktop browser that can handle large images is one thing, so it looks really good on our desktop but mobile browsers I think should call for different stylesheets and images. Anyway, still love the simplicity of Yoko/Whiteboard and the fact they use responsive design.

Interesting idea. I think that might be easy enough to put on a dedicated "portfolio" type page, yes? Or maybe a custom field/post type(?) to allow for messages maybe to appear (upon User activation) at the top of the browser or something?

      Thanks guys/gals!

  • Contact form 7 is pretty decent though honestly ugly. The main thing though that I'd live is a contact form that works with google analytics and adwords tracking. I tried doing it once and it was beyond my skill set with some ridiculous ajax required.

    • Okay, this is probably getting way beyond the scope of even a great WP theme, but all of the suggestions in this thread have my brain spinning, and this popped out: Wouldn't it be cool if you could have a "smart" pop-up opt-in form that knows the search phrase used to find your blog and displays a customized message based on that search phrase? For instance, on a construction contractor's site, a visitor who found it after searching on "roof repair" would see an opt-in form offering a free report about roof repair, while someone who found the site after searching on "kitchen remodel" would see an opt-in offering a free report on kitchen remodeling.

Or does such a thing already exist? (I don't get out much.)
      • [1] reply
  • I think definitely a shopping cart, something for testimonials, nice contact or opt-in form on the front page (optional) and most of all make it generic so that we can use this for restauraunts, accountants, servicemen (by changing graphics).

Definitely just a simple theme to customize all the basic features us as offline marketers need! I'll be thinking of more ideas, I've been thinking of hiring someone to do this for me and I found you maybe giving it for free, SAWEET!

I would also like to add making a simple table for hours maybe on the home page? Definitely some sort of call to action as well (PHONE NUMBER EASY TO SEE).

    THanks,

I'll be editing this post when I think of more, I've had so many ideas that have just left my mind.

  • Hi Scott,

+ I think it would be handy to choose between the slider and the option to embed Google Maps (so the client can perfectly see where the business is situated).

+ I also think that lead capture theme is a must. Could be great if it would be possible to choose whether to place on the right or left side.

+ Facebook pages become more and more popular, what about embeding "Like" button somewhere at the home page.

Anyway, I really look forward for your theme.

    Have a nice weekend!

    Cheers!
  • I've noticed several people mentioning the ability to turn certain parts of the layout on/off based on specific needs, and I think that's a really good idea, but it made me think of something else.

How about a series of several presets, not just page templates but preset layouts that can be used for the whole blog. Just like some themes let you switch between 0,1, or 2 sidebars perhaps you could have options to switch between different preset layouts (i.e. layout 1 has an opt-in form in the header, with a slider below it , and a map w/ a call now QR code in the sidebar, layout 2 has a QR code in the header, coupon in the sidebar and the optin form on the main content area, etc). I didn't really think those layouts through very well, but hopefully that gives an idea of what I mean.

I scanned through most of the posts and didn't see anyone that mentioned something like that unless I missed it.
  • When are we looking at having this AWESOME theme made?
    • [1] reply
    • Not sure if this was discussed earlier...
How about the ability to add a downloadable area in the theme.
For example if it was local restaurant site, then have the ability to download the restaurant menu for example.

Also I was also thinking of having the ability to add an area that changes depending on the time of day.

For example sticking with this restaurant theme, have the menu changing depending on the time of day, so for the morning have a readily available breakfast menu, and then evening a dinner menu.

I'm sure this concept could be applied to other niches.

For example like a Dentist/Doctor/Plumbing, you could have this section display emergency contact details after hours etc...
  • Got another idea for your theme...

Add a drop down list that will have site parameters that you have created with other themes previously. So if you want to make a new site for a client, you can just click on the site name from the drop down list and a new site will be created based on those saved parameters from another site you previously created. That would save alot of time, and of course, you should be able to change any of those parameters in the site control panel to make it site specific for each client, such as the site name, colors, etc.

PS Any idea when your theme will be ready?
Looking forward to seeing it .
  • hey my thoughts are that you could have a really simple split tested landing page version of the theme that could be turned on by just selecting that template, that way you can easily use that for your adwords campaigns without any hassle.

you were being aggresive and targetting a real buyer term you could just make that optimised page the landing template, without having to muck around with with sidebar customization and the like.

    just my 2 pennies

    • The goal of your website is to convert them into buying customers right away or to get on your list because of some enticement. That is obvious. But how do you overcome that trust factor that gets them to call you right now or enter their information?

Here are 2 items that I think will drastically improve your end goals:

      1. I personally think that a video, created by you, the business owner, allows you to overcome that trust factor right away. It also makes you stand out technically from your competition. So create and reserve an easy widget area (pretty standard in WP) to upload a you tube video of you discussing your website and/or design strategy/process, addressing the most common questions that your customers will have.

Make it so this video is on every page that the customer goes into inside your site. (a sidebar widget that is always seen regardless of the page)

      2. Create a testimonial page. Except this testimonial page is NOT just verbage in quotes with a couple pictures of a website or ranking results, although that helps. Yet, this is again, a video of your customer talking about the results they received from working with you.....Powerful stuff. So on the testimonial page, you have different sections for the user (you, me, whoever) to upload the verbage, the video, other pictures and have them all organized efficiently. Perhaps create an area for up to 10 testimonials to be entered on this page.

THEN, make the template such that a thumbnail of the video clip of your "featured testimonials" previews on your front page. Maybe allow for 2 featured testimonials to appear on your front page (your best ones). Make it somewhere relatively noticable. Social proof in the form of video is conquering anything else out there.
  • Nice Thread... I want a free copy too...
  • Optin form that works with Constant contact. They don't have a good forms application, which drives me crazy. Most good plugins (like pop up domination) don't work with constant contact.
  • I want to raise my hand and absolutely ask for these things:

Mobile friendly autodetected version of the site

    ---and---

Header graphics for common professions like legal, dentists, chiros, plumbers, electricians, landscapers, painters, general contractors, roofers, accountants, handymen, building maintenance people, etc. THAT would be awesome!

    Just my $0.02. Thanks.
  • Hey...just read most of this. There's one theme that nails the offline IMers needs in my opinion:

WordPress for Business Websites - The SmallBiz Wordpress Theme - A Complete Web Presence for Your Business (not an aff link)

I think when I installed the latest version of WP it was an upsell from Bluehost or something, but I didn't buy the whole version. I was thinking about it, though, because it seems to have everything you need and is easily customizable.

I'm sure you've seen it but if not, check it out.
    • [1] reply
    • i want to second on that smallbiz is what i use and love it..!
  • Here my thoughts:

    - Place to put the phone number prominently (header and/or sidebar)

This is not a problem for me personally because you can always include phone number in the header and they in my experience always agree to pay for a header/logo image.

There was also a offer here with a theme combining main site, facebook and mobile site plugins. That one (paid theme) they said had a special place for a phoe number, name of the business and address. You enter and it is displayed in the header and several other places.

    - Form to collect leads (with the ability to send you a CC so you can monitor the success of your clients' lead gathering)

I always use it and it is not a problem (for me). One of free themes with a place for Name and Email is Intrepidity. It is a affiliate optimized theme and you can easily find it doing a google search.

    - Google map (this is easy, can be a simple plugin)

Of course it could be a plugin. Also, it could simply be linked to google maps. I usually use google maps for mobile versions of the sites.

    - Image slider ??

It depends on what kind of image it is. If it is a social bookmarks image you can find free plugins. On some sites I use opt-in sliding form...

    - Coupon displayed on homepage/sidebar (or at least the option to)

Not sure about this. For many clients - usually there as a free offer or coupon for opt-in form...

But in general, you can do it with a free theme. You can use plugins and then use them for next sites....
  • Hi promo_guy

we are almost 1 month into this thread.

Any idea when you will be ready to deliver the theme?

    G.
  • I bet Promo Guy is busy coding and putting it all together. Anyway, my best wishes and I really look forward for this theme!
  • [DELETED]
  • YES PLEASE. I would very much appreciate a copy.
  • Is this still being developed?

I'd like to see a mobile plugin that shows a mobile version of the site for mobile phones. Also please set it up so the header can be on every page, or just the home page. Lots of themes seem to only put it on the home page.
  • My priorities would be:

    - Header image which is easily switched for different service types.
    - Prominent phone number.
    - Call to action.
    - Opt-in to get coupon or other incentive.

Lots of great ideas in this thread! Any idea when this will be ready?
  • it's look great have you done your monetize using it
  • Great suggestions but I'd prefer something way different. Something that doesn't look like a blog at all. The actual blog can be another main menu option. Something like this: Landscape Architecture - Palm Beach Landscaping | Botanical Visions, Inc.
  • I haven't checked through all the suggestions so I don't know if it's been mentioned already, but I think the ability to add tiered packages is great for service businesses, like this:

    toolbox.wpbusinessbundle.
    com/styled-boxes

(sorry about the separated link, it wouldn't let me post the URL cos I'm new)

It's worth checking out some of the other features in that demo too - it's a pretty nice offline theme, but it sounds like what you're working on will be superb!

Best of luck, and I'd love to hear about your theme once it's finished

    Benedict
  • Well I read the first page and this third page, so I don't know if the second page has any of this, but here goes.

Personally, I'd like to have the ability to easily remove all the extra background and borders at the top of the page without having to go into the css. I don't always want the "name" of the site to show up there - especially if I have header graphics where the name's already included. Then it's just wasted space as far as I'm concerned.

Along the same lines, I would prefer to have a theme that allows more info above the fold (as has been mentioned before). While some clients want pretty pictures, some want to get their sales message/offer to their customers as quickly as possible.

I'd also like a theme that lets me put the opt-in form in the header area as opposed to the sidebar. This would be for those clients (again) who are less concerned about pretty pictures and more concerned about using their space efficiently.

There are some great ideas here. Good luck with the project!!

    Katie
  • I see many people adding huge features. from my experiences with local business owners, thgey want someting simple not too much "gadgets", think different as Steve Jobs says!
You may want someting simple, slick design and ease to use just like the iPad or iPhone.

So these are the basics on homepage:
    - Header (include logo, graphic according to the niche or business and full company name, adress and phone) that will display on all pages.
    - Slide gallery (show products or services)
    - Full Description (business, services, products)
    - on side bar, plug-ins: opt-in box, social media box (facebook or twitter), testimonial (random display), video box (source from you tube...), map (google)
    - Footer: copyright text and terms and conditions with a link to that page

Other pages: Contact page of course and pages required buy your clients.

    Hope this will help.

I agree 1,000% with the "business owners want it simple" idea. Sharp, clean, simple sites are easier to sell, easier to build, and easier to maintain.

      But hey, that's my opinion.

  • Probably already said but a place to put your address in the sidebar so it appears on every page - For Google places listings

  • cool themes !! thank you buddy !!
  • I would like the ability to put anything I want in a header such as biz name, address, phone number, other text such as "call for free estimates" etc.
I also would like to be able to put the biz name, address and phone in the footer of every page exactly as it appears in their google places page.
I also would like to have a 5 or more page theme that includes a basic "one size fits all" Privacy policy, an editable contact us page, and any other pages google wants to see for seo purposes.
I would like a template that I could use for a contractor, a brick and mortar store, a service business, etc.
  • Please let us know of any themes available right now that may answer some of these needs.
  • Promo Guy: Where are you? Are you still working on this? When can we expect your theme to be ready? There were a lot of fantastic suggestions and feedback in this thread... I hope some theme developer will take the ball and run with it. There is a huge market for such a theme.

  • Great idea

Most of what I would like to see has already been said (especially about making more use of the header areas), so I'll just add these:

Most WP themes ping every time you update a post - and that's even if you've just gone back to change layout or correct a spelling. Places that receive pings can see this as spamming. I use a plugin to get around this, but could you write it into the code so you get, say, 15 mins to make the changes but only having one ping?

Also, could you add a widget for an obvious RSS feed (so people can subscribe to your feed), and another so you can import others' content.
  • Hello,

I'd like a wordpress theme that and can have 1 or 2 sidebars on the right side.

I'd like a small header that I can put my website title in and I'd like to be able to change the colors.

I'd like to be able to post videos in the center of the page. Most themes have a hard time getting this right.

I'd like to be able to add pictures, sign-up widgets, and videos easily to sidebar and add content to it.

I'd like to add my membership plugin (WP eMember) to the theme without troubles.

I'd like the theme to adjust to the full screen size instead of a small screen in the middle of my monitor.

Needs a "disallow script" so search engines won't index file downloads in the root directory.

Good themes are hard to find and even harder to customize.

It needs to be seo'd with h1 tags for the website, page, and post titles. Need to be able to add h2 and h3 subtitle tags.

Needs to be easy to add links to images and content. Need to be able to leave links black instead of blue. Some links don't need to stand out from the content.

I'd like to add content to the side of images or videos on the page.

These are just a few of the things I'd like in a theme.

    Thanks,

  • id love something that stands out on the phone with the business phone number!
  • Just a suggestion : Could you make this work on multisites?
  • Documentation has been mentioned a little on the thread, but I can't stress how important this is with screenshots. Nothing more frustrating than spending hours trying to get something to work that could have been an easy FAQ question. Also would suggest putting up a dev forum for your customers.

In terms of video, ability to embed all sorts of video, not just YouTube.

    Thanks.
  • I guess he never coded the theme? I also am working on a Local Business Theme for Wordpress. I have coded over 100 themes and am working on something for a Warrior Forum exclusive with Video How To's and guides as well.

I will post and update in this thread when I am done.

  • Built-in mobile site is very important to me. With customization options makes it even better. Would rather not have a separate plugin/website for the mobile site.

    • Just sent you a PM - you might not be able to reply to it, but I did include my private email in it.

Totally 100% agree While it's okay for some people, I personally prefer to go with as few (if any!) plugins as possible. (Too many bogs down a site, and most people don't realize that).

  • Hi, Scott !

I've seen a lot of good ideas mentioned here !

I didn't read all of them, so pardon me if I'm 'repeating' anything someone else might have already said.

A while back, I purchased "profits theme" - - all in all, a good purchase as it came the closest to my feel for an html site - - you could put practically anthing anywhere you wanted - just like an 'all html' site - - I like that kind of functionality

HTML is very straightforward; WP can often be a bit confusing (at least for me).

The ideal for me would allow you to put anything anywhere - according to the type of site you're trying to put together... sort of like a big blank canvas, where you can 'drag and drop' various elements at will.

What would further help that notion of a big blank canvas would be a 'window' that showed your big blank canvas's appearance 'while' you're working on it so you can see at a glance if it is proceeding the way you envision it "before" it's actually finished - - you can catch your mistakes in real time before you mess it up and have to start over again

Feel free, Scott, to drop my copy and developers license to me in a url sent to me via pm

All kidding aside, Scott, this would be of the most help to someone like me - I like to see is 'as' I do it,... not 'after' it's done.

    I hope this helps, Scott

I commend you on your task.

  • Hi folks,

Sorry for not coming back to this thread in a while. Just been crazy busy lately and I have NOT abandoned the idea.

I run several other WSOs and answer lots of support questions for my other products so it's been busy for me to say the least.

I love the idea of a drag-n-drop system and while that will cost $1000s to have developed, I will certainly be striving for something along those lines in the coming months. Can't put an exact date on it though unfortunately but just know that it's something I want to put together.

I will be coming out with a relatively simple theme soon, nothing complex like a drag-n-drop system but again, one company quoted me at $5,000 so I obviously want to have all my ducks in a row before I plonk down a lot of cash like that lol.

Customers of my affiliate blogs have been asking me for a "simple solution" for offliners so that's what I'll be coming out with but again, it won't be a massively complex theme. More like something akin to Anne's artisteer example ie simple yet a bit more pro looking (no offense Anne, I too have artisteer). It won't be an artisteer theme.

Thanks again for all the feedback and as soon as I free up some of my time (most likely next month) I'll go back through and note all the great ideas and hopefully have a better idea time.

    Cheers folks

    Scott
  • Can you add this feature? A lot of businesses want coupons that automtically change the discount and code on a monthly basis.

Also there are a lot of construction and cleaning businesses that need themes.
  • I am putting together my website for my offline business right now. I have spent days installing themes and tweaking them and every time I get to a point and say This is not going to work.

Things I like in the different themes.
-first there needs to be different template options when creating a page. for example a homepage, contact form,, ect...

The home page needs to be focused on lead capture. I have seen a few templates with this, but none of them work for me. the shell lite template has lead capture on the home page, but it is not configurable enough. others have widgets that are also not configurable.

    It needs to be flexible.
    • [1] reply
    • It would be great if the theme came with at least a dozen of popular niche headers. People are kind of lazy designing their own stuff, or outsourcing to do so and therefore want everything on a silver platter

  • Hey Scott

Thanks for this offer and it is smart to do this market research. You'll make a killer theme!

One thing I would like is to have a fast process for creating a prototype site.

So I just enter the basic details about the business, upload a banner image and I get a cool looking site.

    E.g.

    Business Name ______________
    Contact Name __________________
    Phone Number ________________
    Address ________________
    Intro Paragraph _________________
    Main Image _________________
    Logo Image _________________

Now the way it turns this into a site could be configurable via options etc.

Now when I want to do a demo site for a customer I can just use this to create one in 5 minutes. Or if I am doing a real site it will get most of the drudge work out the way in 5 and then I can spend time on customisation.

Perhaps this is less of a "theme" thing and more of a "plugin" thing.
  • Just got an email from Tom Harvey (no relation) about this. Thanks, Tom.

My big wish - and it might have been covered already, but I've only read
the first post) - is to have H1 tags for the main keyword phrase,
    and H2 tags for subheadings.

And perhaps even H3 tags for lesser headings.

To control the display size of these H1 H2 H3 headings, add the tinymce
plugin which gives easy font size and font face control.

  • MY Wish List(things i havent seen yet anyway.
    1. A place for citatiions in the footer and sidebar
    2. Easy spot on each page for at least one image and video in the body
    3. A list format (Bullet points or sumthing toward the bottom of home page) product and services portion that can be turned on and off if needed
    4. Similar setup like above for cites, towns, villages etc. to be listed

    • My wishlist would include:

a simple professional theme out-of-the-box with ability to add in extras
      mobile and Facebook integration
Google Maps facility, possibly as a pop-out light-box type feature
      several styles/colour combinations

      Thanks
      Ali
  • More control over appearance of h1, h2, etc. tags
More widgets for social media, opt-ins and page layout flexibility
    Footer skin with 3-4 widgets
Drop down box widget for side bar to add more nav real estate
  • All I know is that I'm getting very excited for any templates because all of this sounds looks a great idea.

And I'm on board for whoever.
  • Most feature I want are already mentioned but to emphsize the point
    Easy video and video sitemap
    easy rss feed setup
    Sliders with flexibility
    Easy mobile conversion
    easy google map feature
opt in for coupons or reports
    templates for multiple pages
Ease of changing page colors and look so all sites can be different
Store or product page setup that is doable and easy
    documentation and video training
  • Remember to keep it simple but have excellent content and use the two click rule.

Trying to navigate on a mobile device needs to be as close as possible to the PC based IMO.

Reason that I say that about the mobile aspect is that the devices nowadays are pretty good about having a screen big enough to view the full size website. That is one thing we recommend when we deal with clients that ask about a mobile version.

Nothing worse that trying to remember where I found a certain post or event that I can not find on a mobile version. Still, the choice is up to you and the client.

Have the call to action form on the home page and on the inside pages. Lots of replies have noted that. That is so important for the client to see that they are given a easy way to contact your client.

The two click rule, if they can't find what they are looking for in two clicks or less they can find the back button to another website in one click.

Best of luck and read all the threads. Lots of great ideas out there to help you!
  • Hi,

I'd like to have these options (not necessarily all of them on every website):

    *Map
*GPS coordinates (if not on map)
*Photo of business (on a nice, sunny day... not relying on Google Maps' street-level image)
    *Phone number
    *Click-to-call option
    *Featured/sale product or service
    *Photo of business owner
    *Coupon option
*Customer info collection (mailing list) option

Though I love a slider near the top of the page (above the fold), this is changing how I look at site design: Page layout algorithm improvement - Inside Search So, for me, the slider is out... unless the client absolutely, positively has to have a slider. (And, from the "ooh, shiny!" point of view, I expect plenty of clients will want that, regardless of SEO impact.)

    • Wow. A ton of great ideas here. I would love to have the finished product when it's done. I've been looking for a great offline theme with plenty of options.

  • One thing I have an issue with most business themes is the footer. No more links or the like. At the bottom likely should be a reduced footer image. If they make it to the bottom, it should be hours and a phone number and a mascot or picture.

They made it to the bottom, now its time to call or go by, not click on more links.
    • [1] reply
    • You're right, but that's partially because of the way people use the themes. They expect they're supposed to do the links like everyone else does....

but many themes allow you to simply CHANGE the widget or layout of the footer so that you CAN change it to a footer image.

  • In addition to the many great suggestions here, I think it would be great to have a built-in autobtagger that can be configured with city name so all tag suggestions get city name tacked on for better SEO.

Also please build in the basic SEO fields so plugins like All In One SEO are not needed

It would also be helpful to have a simple admin panel to layout the homepage or short codes to create a custom layout in a page and make that the homepage. Like many others I clone sites to reuse but I don't want them all looking the same.

Besides mobile style options it should have an option to redirect to a different URL based on mobile device recognition. Be sure to let us pick devices to exclude though. iOS doesn't always need this. Some sites, like restaurants, are better done on a completely separate mobile site.

Also it would be good to make this as a framework so we could build child themes for specific industries on top of it
  • When will be roll it out? Waiting for it since.
  • Thanks for the good advice on here
  • Can you plz list those themes? may be just names. Thanks!

    • I was actually already working on this for release within the early part of March

I have a list, but can you PM me what niches specifically you're wanting, just so I can make sure they're in my list for you?

  • contrary to the poster above i would say do NOT have slider with 4 'home services boxes' below- there are too many themes like that.
Uncluttered with room for seo article on homepage is what i need

    • totally agree. those are just a waste of space
  • My client wanted a contact form thats able to upload pictures. For certain businesses that makes a lot of sense. He is a hair doctor, who helps you if you have no hair and want hair back, so pictures macke sense.

Was this good enough to get a free copy?

  • I have been looking for a design where each page can be like its own website within one. ( for multiple businesses on one domian) so maybe each page can have their own side bar where they can place their contact info & form, maybe a google map, about their business. Or maybe even a widget to do separate pages within a page. That would be awesome along with everything else everyone else said.
  • The good news is that there are now lots of other great offline themes made available here on WF. I will try to put together a list and post it here later.
  • I want a free copy too....
  • 1) please make it mobile ready so if a client sees it with a smartphone they dont think were stupid for offering mobile sites without having one
    2) have a capture page capability or a simple widget where we can add an optin box
    3) it would be nice to be able to personalize the site like if a bit owner went to mysite.com/luigi's_pizza it would say luigis pizza on the site somewhere
    4) please enable us to change the colors easily

thats all I have for now, Ill be back
  • My simple suggestions :
    -contact forms as widget
    -integrated coupon deals plugin
    -custom testimonials widget
-responsive theme (auto-detect for mobile use)
  • i would like to have a free copy too. Please add it mobile ready and maps too.

  • I didn't read all the posts so if I'm redundant, please forgive me. I'd like to see an optional appointment selection plug-in where they can list their top 3 times. Not an actual calendar because my clients customize the time spent w/their clients based on personal needs. Also, maybe integrate the top plug-ins for backups, security, etc. all in one place so we don't have to select and activate 20 different plug-ins. A click-to-call feature would be awesome as well. Thanks!

    • So the options you are looking for already exisit.
They come with themes. I can't remeber the exact names, but I have used them.

The appt setter, one of my clients has this on their site.
I think I remeber seeing it recently on a medical theme???
The click to call can be done with most mobile webistes.
The all in one is out there too....

On top of that, I am curious to know why you felt the need to ressurect a year old thread?
Did you look at the sig of the OP?
Did you see him selling his theme?
      • [1] reply
  • Well I have read some of the suggestions and to be honest, most are over my head.
I provide a small monthly service ot the price point of $27.

I would like to see a theme where I can place a small video in the Header with a 'meet the owner' tab . This would then play video of owner introducing product or sevice.
I would also like pre- built sales pages that can just be edited and added as I grow.

That's all I can think of for right now.

    Thanks.
