Question for Stay@Home Mom's Out There

My biggest enemy right now is time. I've been at this for a year, and really enjoy Internet Marketing (the learning, the challenge, the potential earnings). I currently earn just enough to pay for groceries and help (a nanny) on Fridays only. I'm pretty proud of that, but want to push myself further, while still remain 100% engaged with my twins.

I have 3-year old twins that go to pre-school 2x a week (for only 2 hours/day) so I am still very much involved with their day-to-day activities, and hate compromising my time with them for work (although sometimes it's just not an option).

I thought I'd ask the stay@home moms out there... how do you manage your time running your home business and your household? What unique methods, or helpful tips do you have for time management, especially if you don't yet have the luxury of hiring full-time help or sending your kids to daycare full time?

Right now, I get up really early to work for a couple of hours before they wake up, and often stay up really late in the evenings. This solution seems to work fine (albeit I LIVE on coffee), but maybe there are other alternatives to consider. Hence my inquiry.

Thanks for your time

Elizabeth

Not a stay at home mom but have some time management tips that I've used when I had my offline business so that I had time for a more balanced life. Since then, I've helped other friends of mine with these same tips.

It is easier to stay organized than to get organized once things are disorganized, so take some time to organize not just the "stuff" that you have to deal with but your mind by having a set plan.

For example, I was amazed at how much time I and everyone I helped took to answer emails, phone calls and open and handle regular mail.

So these are the guidelines I put into place.
First thing in morning and mid afternoon, answer emails as quickly as possible, never answer the phone, always return the calls and have a set time once or twice a day to do this and handle all things only once.

Don't look at them and then put them in a pile to do later. Either don't handle them at all or handle them only once.

I set up a lot of systems at home and have used them to this day.

There is so much more and I don't want to write a super long post but if you PM, I'll give you more.

Doing this allowed me enough time to run multiple businesses, rental property, have time with family at home and do the things that need done around the house. I hope this helps.

Edit: I realized you can't PM me. I advice you become a member of the War Room, then you can PM but more importantly, it is the best value for anything online and so much good free stuff it will make your head spin.

Hi there! I, too, have 3 year old twins!! Mine do not currently go to preschool at all. Basically, I work early morning and late evenings, just like you do. I also do what I can during naptime, IF they take one!

One of the things I do in the meantime is keep my smartphone nearby. As new emails come in during the day, I can delete them immediately, OR star them so I know I really want to read them when I get that alone time. This keeps me from spending ALL my free time to work on clearing out emails. Usually I take about 5 minutes every hour to do this, and I am with the kids, so they never care...OR...(and sorry if this is TMI)...I take my smartphone with me to the bathroom. (You know as a mom that sometimes that is the only free time you get...haha)

In all seriousness, I found keeping those emails in check during a few minutes here and there gives me a lot more time to actually WORK when the time is available.

I also have a spreadsheet set up where I list DAILY TASKS...what I am trying to rank for, what sites I need to post on, etc.

Then I have a list of broader goals.....maybe THIS WEEK instead of DAILY, like create new site for xxx or update backlinks for zzzz.

This helps me kick out the most important things FIRST, and then move into the others as I have time.

    Hope this helps!!!

Awesome! Thanks for taking the time to give me your input. And how cool that you have 3-year old twins too. Boys - Girls - one of each?

We have one of each. More than anything I think it's nice to know that I'm not the only one in this boat of trying to BALANCE my day while making my twins the top priority.

I'm knee deep in this Internet Marketing business and really want to keep it going forever... lol. But I also don't want my twins to only remember me as being attached to my laptop.

I need to start setting daily goals, making sure that I put deadlines to them so that I actually achieve them.

Thanks again - and nice to "meet" you.

I usually get most of my work done while my kids are either sleeping or at school. If I stay up late the night before I might take a nap during the day. I also have a planner where I write down everything that needs to get done for the days and weeks ahead. This really comes in handy because it's easy to get caught up in the day to day and forget important meetings and appointments. It also important to take time out for yourself, eat right and exercise so you won't get so easily tired.

You bring up a great point about working in exercise. I definitely find those days to be my most productive.

I have two boys. They were born at 26 weeks, so I was pretty much forced to work from home. Not that I don't love it. I really wouldn't have it any other way.

Publishing to Amazon is free. I suggest that you write a book or get some PLR and publish your book to Amazon. This can be a great way to get some quick sales and ebooks are hot. Pick some topics in your area of expertise and write about them. Other moms would love a quick ebook on holiday crafts for the kids, how to organize, how to keep the house clean, how to deal with the kids going to school for the first time, birthday party ideas, ideas for entertaining guests, fun things to do as a family on a budget, fun ways to have a staycation instead of going somewhere for vacation. I know what I am talking about because my wife is a stay at home mom, and she is always telling me these cool things she researches and does with our kids and family. She is the best! Write about these ideas, and you are bound to make some money selling ebooks on Amazon! Profit well, mom! You moms are the world's strongest people. The glue that holds the family together.

Look for pockets in your day when you can get little tasks done --it's amazing how those can all add up, especially when you don't have a whole lot of time. Search for Jenn Dize, she was selling a product about time chunking -- she has kids and a business too.
