Google places question

I am trying to do some marketing for a local business that my buddy owns and i have succeeded in getting several results on the top page of google for many keywords associated with his business.

However, the google places map shows the center of town and his shop is on the outskirts of town so his shop name does not come up on the google places listings on the first page. Is there anything I can do to help bump this ranking?

Any input is greatly appreciated

The center of town is not the primary ranking factor for Google places. Having said that, if they live in "City" and his address is an actual address that is a "Town" a few miles outside of "City", then that is a problem.

Having said that, making sure you have congruency in your directory listings is KEY...right down to the apostrophe's, # signs and anything else. Continue to find local-specific directories you can add his listing into. Those are the hidden gems that can give your Places profile more weight from the others. For instance, do a search for "City directory" and see if there are any tiny little directories you can list him in. Then get vertical specific, with "Industry Directory"... so on and so forth.

What a great golden nugget re industry specific directories.

I don't understand why so many times I see Google Places listings
where a business in another city 10 or more miles away from
      the others gets listed.

I know there are exceptions to that center of the city, circle
of influence thing, but I don't know what they are. Maybe it's
      the industry specific citations. Eh?

I agree with Voasi. The key factor is consistency this is the only place where double content matter and is Google Places you need to make sure that all your citations info match. Also you gotta make sure your Google listing is Content rich. Use all 10 pictures, Videos use google KW tool and look up the 4 more KW searched for his business IE "Atlanta Plumber" and optimaze the listing acordingly thos Keywords. Also if you got ScrapeBox to a blast on blogs related to his business the good thing is that the approval rate will be high as you are no leaving a link just the business info IE "Thanks for your great content I really enjoyed the read | ABC Company, LLC 1234 Main St Atlanta, GA Tel. 123-456-7890" see how the info match the G places Listing? the spiders will pick up that and boost your Listing. I hope this help.

Actually it sounds like the listings above could be affected by a new algo that just started showing up. I blogged it last week and named it the "proximity lockout" algo.

The blended results for a long time where mainly based on organic SEO factors. But that recently changed and in some markets for core keywords like city dentist, city plumber the only listings that rank are close to the city center. If you are outside the new tight radius your site and Place page become disconnected and you no long rank in blended.

It's like a G engineer cranked the location dial up to high. See screenshot of Seattle Chiropractor on my blog. Image says it better than I can explain it right now. Carpal is killing.

Thanks for all the input. I will look into getting him listed in more directories and see if that makes a difference
