Hey Guys,

With Google taking up the first 6 positions with local listings wont this put most of the offline marketers/consultants out of business?

Well actually it has make the job more simple. A good consultant will see this as an opportunity and offer Google Places Optimization withing their packages since is far simple to rank a Google listing than a Website for X Keyword.

I agree with Manny, if anything, this will offer more opportunities to suggest other local marketing techniques to not only get your client on the first page but also keep them there. This is definitely where a good consultant can demonstrate creative ways in which to accomplish this.

I usually Charge a Flat Fee from $300-$800 depending how easy or hard it will be to rank the listing for a client. I do not offer monthly follow up at this time But I do tell them that in the package it included listing their site to all the Local Directories (As you will do tha anyways to rank on Google Places) But I don't make it look like I gotta do that I make it look like is an added bonus that I am offering when they buy my Google Places Optimization Services.

Yeah this is nowhere close to being true.

Especially since you're an online marketing consultant - SEO is just one portion of it...

Weird how quickly people assume the worst in all situations.

Just have to learn how to get your clients in the right spots. Google and offline business go hand and hand.

As long as they are evolving, offline marketers will have a business because regular businesses must evolve. And obviously we, the offline marketer, help them evolve.

If Google stayed stagnant, then offline marketers would be in trouble.

So root for changes to google as much as ya can!

In our local paper on Wednesday there were 2 half page ads by Google offering free websites to small business and it looks like intuit is in it with Google. Can't remember if there is a monthly fee though.

    Has anyone seen this elsewhere?

This will be what you're talking about I imagine - since it's intuit.

It does give them a free website with free hosting for a year.

But, once again we are internet marketers - not web designers.. we are generally targeting people that have websites in the first place.

I took a look through the tips & tricks PDF they supply. It does mention SEO and Paid Advertising to drive traffic to your site. It says your options are are either DIY or to hire a pro. Mentioning that if you take the DIY approach you will have to stay on top of the latest trends to stay relevant in Google etc.

The positive side of that is Google isn't automatically going to give them authority it appears.

Google also has a free mobile website builder which hasn't appeared to take off - and some warriors even used the builder and found that Google brands itself on the site. Which makes it look less the ideal..

You have to think that we go out on our own dime and bring people online - which is essentially bringing customers to Google. We are a benefit to them!!

Well, no doubt that website tonight, intuit and other platforms are definitely effecting the market for us shooting for web design. Even worse that they claim to offer SEO without really offering SEO. LOL.

There will always be doomsday theories out there for us marketers, online and offline. Isn't our job as entrepreneurs to come up with new advantages though? Major corporations have the power and money, but for them to change gears, it takes a lot longer. We have the flexibility and the speed to completely change our direction if need be.

First of all... Google Places goes hand-in-hand with an actual website.

In the older days... we would see that the Places (called "Maps" a while back) ranking was pretty much independent of the local site. That has all changed.

The word is "congruent". Now much weight is placed on the actual website. Is the Places listing congruent with the website. Are the addresses the same? Etc.

In other words... the better you can get a real website optimized, the better they are going to do in Places.

It is actually a little "deeper" than the way I described it, but the point is... Places rankings are much more influenced by the actual website optimization than ever before.

I think whether you're offering Places assistance or Web Design, these ads by Google and Intuit are probably going to help you more than hurt you. They're basically advertising your services and giving what's called "third party credibility" to a product and service that's needed, and you're making yourself available to provide.

Let's not forget that free website services have been around for years, with templates, hosting and the whole bit. But also remember that there's also a whole population of business owners and managers that want nothing to do with "designing" a website either because they don't think they have the time, or even the know-how... even if we recognize these systems as simple as cut and paste.

As far as the Places goes, you can look through listing after listing and see there's still a tremendous number of businesses who haven't even gone so far as claiming their Place, let alone maxing it out with everything available and optimizing it as much as possible.

Offline Marketers have NOTHING to fear at this point. There is plenty of work to be done and if you have any of these skills, the unemployment rate in this industry should be 0% for a long time coming.
