Outrank Google Places--Yes Or No ???

Hello Everyone,

I want to ask just how many of you offline marketers have been able to outrank Google places ?

    Haven't tried it but it can be done quite easily! Once you have the right tools and knowledge. Would you like to know how?

      I really would like to know if it's the same as ranking for any other keyword..I rank for some very competitive keywords now..just not any local keywords.

      I have been told that local keywords is harder to rank for if not impossible because of Google places at the top..and Google will not allow anything above the places..not sure..I have also been told it's easy..was looking to get the truth once and for all today about this.

        Okay, seriously... I have been on this forum and contributed for a while now. Begging people to go to your website in 10 different threads is not the way to go about it. I never tell people to go to mine on here, EVER... People go to it because I contribute and it sparks interest. Not to mention, your training doesn't really offer much. So please stop spamming your links, a sig link is good enough.

        Now for those wanting a REAL answer... The reason you don't get answers is because the majority of people who through self proclamation are gurus, don't REALLY know the answer. The ones that DO know the answer, are not going to give the information away for free.

        I have had success ranking above google places. There isn't a formula I have been able to come to. Luckily most clients want both Google places and local SEO. National clients don't worry about that.

        A lot of it is the same stuff you would normally do in SEO.

        If you are already in the #1 spot, pushing above google places will require HIGH PR contextual backlinks. In my experience about 75% of the time this will work for me when directly below google places. HIGH PR contextual backlinks, .edu backlinks, and press release syndication.

        Using those techniques assume you already have a decent amount of backlinks, and that you are already in the #1 position. This isn't fool proof, and it isn't guaranteed, it is just what I have had success with more often than not.

            I assume for this question that the site you are trying to outrank with is not local and cannot have a Google Places account? If so, then march on. If not, then you would be better served to extablish a Google Places account and optimize for what GP wants in additon to organic SEO.

            Here is the deal, people are more inclined to click on link that is a Google Places listing with reviews, etc. That little upside down red dropplet with reviews is more likely to get clicks, even if below the #1 spot. Reviews are becoming more and more a big deal...social proof.

            If not, then yes of course you can outrank Places. It is just a matter of your site having an organic ranking than all of the sites that are on the first page with a Google Places Account. if you can do this, then bam you are above GP. It is as easy as that.

            As far as HOW to do the SEO, well that is where excellent organic SEO techniques come in. Follow what IAmNameLess said, he had some great tips above.

          Thank you so much for sharing that with me...I do have a ?..what if the Google place sites are not optimized for the keyword ?...and none have anchor text links pointing to them optimized for the keyword ?..is this an easy kill like regular seo ?

            Well, I'm not sure what you are asking. To rank above google places that should just make it easier for you... Or are you asking about ranking the organic site above the google places that they have, and their own google places is not optimized? Sorry, I'm not following!

              Ok..the website does not have any Google place accounts associated with it..I just want to know if a normal website that is 100% optimized for the keyword can out rank Google places..and rank above them ? even if it's a full pack of Google places above organic results.

                Yes I have done it. Your first goal needs to be the #1 spot for organic results. After that it is time to focus on getting above the places listings.

                  How hard is it after you rank number one in organic results to get above Google places..I have always thought that Google would make it very difficult to do

                    Just follow what I said in one of the previous posts and you will be on your way. It takes some time though, nothing is going to happen over night. Patience is the best tool you can have, really. LOL.

                    It is difficult in a way, but at the same time, not really. If you're used to local competition, it will seem difficult to you. If you have got results on a national scale, then you are going to be perfectly fine. Don't do TOO much or it might back fire on you. Just get your high PR contextual backlinks, use press releases, edu links, social media and you're going to be okay.

                      Not yet I just created the site 4 days ago..I'm #4 at the moment which is not bad.

      Hello Tim,

      I would love to know how to rank above the Places results. I have asked around and tried to figure it out, but the only advice is "you just have to think outside the box" or "there's plenty of good local niches ..you just have to pick the right one". Not helpful.

      Any actionable insight or advice you can offer would be appreciated.

    Is not hard but is not easy. Is just like regular SEO you gotta research the keywords you gonna target and then analyze the the comp. After that just build your listing and make sure you provide plenty of content, Use all pics and videos, Place your target keywords on categories. Then just built all citations and when you are done with that just fire up ScrapeBox. Make comment as follow.

    Random generic comment | Business name | Business Address | Phone #

    See what I did there? Since there is not a link in the comment they will most likely get approved and the spiders will see that and catch it as a citation. The more citations the higher the rank.

    The way you do it is getting high PR contextual links pointing to your website, in that way you will be above Google places.

    It partly depends on what kind of site and in what niche you're competing. I have a clients site ranked above GP, but it's also an old site, maybe 10 years old, that I recently re-modeled. It probably benefited from such an aged domain, and all I did was fix the on-page and threw some good backlinks at it. But that wouldn't work by itself for a brand new site.

      I really don't think either of those are factors. The kind of site, I don't see how that would matter. Websites are websites, if it is properly optimized and you do the off page things then what makes the difference?

      Also, I would have believed the niche being a factor a couple months ago until I debunked that theory.

      Everything I have heard that people place on a variable is usually BS from what I can tell. And like I said, I am only having success about 75% of the time, so I can only rule out what I have specifically tested against and succeeded.

    Man if is a local search term for a business then why fight Google? Just create a listing on Google places for the Site and rank it on the top A spot. The you will have your business on the Organic results first page and the GP results.

      Not bad at all. One thing you need to do is see if you are ranking because of how fresh you are, or if it is due to lack of competition. Keep building those links, do some press releases and you will strengthen your position!

      Because it isn't possible for everyone. I can't have a places listing in Fresno when I live in St. Louis, but you can bet I will continue to add new pages to my website that is optimized for City name, Web design city name SEO.

        Couple things...

        1st does G even choose to show any organic ABOVE the Places for your city + KW? Depends on KW and what browser and it changes. Some SERPS have Places right on top, some have 2 organic then Places. So part of the question depends on the type of display G chooses to use.

        But as far as ranking high in local for organic in Google. Depending on the market, it can be much easier than regular organic, because on a local level keywords are typically much less competitive. It's just all about good old fashioned SEO with city modifiers thrown in the mix. Good on-site with local can make a much bigger difference than most people realize, but backlinks can help too.

          I have to completely agree with Linda here.

          The main things for ranking above Places from "everything" has a lot to do with the actual search phrases. From what I've seen City + Keyword usually brings up the 7 pack results with only paid ads above it, however reverse the search and put keyword + city you can end up some results showing up above Places. Take that with a grain of salt though Google always has a way to make us liars. lol This is just my general experience from what I've encountered.

          I believe having a solid and well thought out website with sound on site SEO at a local level is enough in many cases to rank at the top of page 1, at a minimum in heavily competitive markets you can still get to the first page. I've done it many times without back links or any offsite SEO. Start adding back links, (I rarely back link) but if I do I wait until the site reaches the first page and NEVER before. This just entrenches the site on the first page even more.

    Hi everyone,

    I have something that concernes me these days. I have a client who ranks first in Google Places for their local keyword. But the fact is that 2 websites "broke" the barricade and are ranked in front of the Google Places results, with their organic result. So positions 1-2 are organic, then 3rd is the first ranking Gooogle Places result, my client.

    My question is: what can I do? Can it progress further? If he ranks first in Google Places, but overall 3rd, how can he outrank himself?

    What page should I target now? I suppose that I shouldn't target the homepage, which is shown in Google Places, but the next page seen in organic results right? They have a landing page on the second page of organic results, which will never outrank the Places results to become 1st or 2nd, but should I concentrate on that, to bring it to first page?

    I hope I was clear explaining the situation. How can I help them perform better for that local keyword?

    Why not find a couple site that are in this position and study them? Then copy what they have done for seo, backlinks, citations, etc.

    If you do this and still can't get the results, maybe something like domain age plays a big factor when everything else is done correctly.

    Another thought - when did this position become a factor? Before G's last big update? Maybe it is a glitch and will be removed at some point. My thinking is why would G want to give away the best organic spot above GP?

      These are called merged results which mixes organic and places pages. Fall of 2009 is when it started.

    I just took a "quick" look at "city+dog spa" as a search and the results had 3 listed above GP. What stood out immediately was multiple pages ranking on page 1 with relevant optimized content around the keyword dog.

    It appears to be a major factor compared to the top 2 listings (with reviews) in GP, but again, this was a 5 min look so take that for what it is worth.

    So guys, if you already rank first on GP for your homepage, but the overall rank is 4th because there are 3 organic results above you... next step if you want progress is to take a page and try to outrank the Google Places yourself. My question: which one should you concentrate on? I assume that on the first page that Google sees as organic result for your site right? And not necessarily the homepage which ranks on GP. Any thoughts?

      If your asking about back linking a Google places page URL I personally haven't seen any evidence that it helps. I think Google knows its completely contrived. Who back links a Places page.
