Toll free number that redirects to your number?

Hey all, so I've started my offline business a while ago, and I'm at the point where I need a number for my clients to contact me at all time.

I don't have an office, and the only phone line that I can use to talk to my clients is my mobile number. However, it is also my personal number.

I need to differentiate my clients from my personal calls.

Is it possible to setup a toll free number that redirects to my mobile number? That way I'll be able to just look at my caller id and, if the caller is my toll-free number, I could pick up the phone professionally.

Any suggestions? Maybe other methods of achieving the same results?

Thanks.

try a twilio 800 number... and forward it to your cell phone, i dont see why it shouldn't work we do this for one of our support numbers but integrate it with openvbx since we already have it setup....

    see twilio.com and openvbx.com

    more expensive options would be:

    kall8.com and ringcentral.com

    hope that helps

Yep. A Twilio 800 number is $2 a month, plus you'll pay 2 cents per minute for the call. It works - I'm currently doing it.

I know there is a google voice ap for iphone. Since it is free wghy not set it up and text it. Not like 10-30 mins of time is a bad investment for soemthing that may solve your problem.

    On android it works perfect.

Do you have to use OpenVBX when using Twilio? I only read a tad on OpenVBX and seen it involves installing stuff on our hosting server. I'd rather not...

You can do what you're looking to do for free with
Google Voice. No toll free #. Some local area code.

You may play with 3/4 letter vanity words like 4/seo
    or 4/sms.

You can see your call/text history.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

When people call your GV number does it come up differently on your phone? Meaning does it distinguish between a number calling your GV number and your regular line?

I remember testing it out a while back but I didn't think that it did this. I could very well be wrong.

No, the number calling is what shows up on your caller ID, so you can't distinguish GV calls from regular calls.

Not true. I have Google Voice setup where if someone calls my Google Voice number, my caller ID shows as my Google Voice number, that way I know what to say when I answer the phone.

I've using the Android Google Voice app for this. I've been doing it for the last three years. I also make outgoing calls from my Google Voice number.

The exact settings to do this is. With the Google Voice Android app, under Settings for making outgoing calls I have where it says Making Calls set to Ask Every Time I Make a Call. So every time I make a call it asks me if I want to use my regular cell phone number or google voice number.

For the caller ID to show as your Google Voice number when you receive a call, log into the Google Voice website, go to the little wheel thing on the right hand side of the screen, click on it and Settings will drop down. Click on that. Then click on Calls. Under Caller ID (incoming) click on where it says Display My Google Voice Number. That's it.

With this setup you can make outgoing calls with your google voice number and incoming calls will show your google voice number. I just save my google voice number on the phone in my contacts and have it saved as a different ring tone.

You don't need the app if you only want your google voice number to show on the caller ID, it's only to make outgoing calls from the google voice number.

For an 800 number and just for numbers in general Twilio and OpenVBX can't be beat. I wish Twilio had an Android app that i could make calls from that is what I'm waiting for.

Didn't the OP want a toll free number?

Google Voice doesn't provide toll free 800 numbers the last time i checked...

Its not that complicated to setup openvbx, some hosts now offer 1 click install similar to how you would setup wordpress - openvbx gives you much better control over your number forwarding.. if you really get in to it it has some really good CRM tools too that can really help your business...

However the minimum you would need to do is add a small script to your server that would correctly point your inbound calls from you toll free number to your phone... for the time/cost of getting it set up its more than worth it...

Plus you get $30 worth of credit for free when you first sign up with Twilio too...

i use phone.com to do this...basically have an 888 number that gets forwarded to any phone number you like...they also support an automated menu recording system (e.g. press 1 for sales, press 2 for orders, ect), and depending on what they press you can redirect to different phone numbers...you can also setup automated voicemail during certain hours...its pretty nice i can't complain about their service at all.

If I use twilio and use my iPhone to receive ingoing calls and also make outgoing calls, are my minutes going to be billed by my mobile provider as well?

I've looked at openvbx, and saw that they have a mobile app for iPhones. If I use their app, do you think I'll only be charged twilio fees since I'm using an app and I'll be billed data fees instead?

    Thanks

Good thread on phone technology. FYI for those interested. I have been using ringcentral for some time and have no complaints with a business 800 and fax 800 #, I came across this post searching for twillio setups and openvbx which I want to run my own platform off. Redirects from ringcentral work cool and I can even setup other numbers and redirects since I have a business model setup and not just one personal number and also integrated with fax to email and I recevie the image as well. I have also been playing around with google voice and android based phone. I am mostly new to IM, but have been a networking tech for 18 years, and built many voip platforms. My first VOIP was in 1995 between South Florida and Sao Paulo Brasil. Some other interesting setup we are worked on is Video over IP. @Jay Moreno posted some fine points, as thru research twillio and openvbx were options I am looking into. Nice plugin @Jay Moreno.

You can set up a very professional 1-800 # service for $9.95+ month but if you go over the minutes they will charge you a little bit extra, but this depends on the service and what type of monthly account + what add ons you want plugged in.

Either way, all of these services should offer a forwarding feature it's pretty much standard with any and all 1-800 services.

I use twilio numbers and when I first started I kept hearing about the twilio/open vbx thing. It seems that everyone uses open vbx but I downloaded it and get extremely confused how to use it.

So I sent a support ticket in and twilio sent me to https://www.twilio.com/labs/twimlets where I could set up forwarding and everything without having to be a computer developer.

Another vote for a twilio toll free number forwarded, I do the same. As Bob mentioned above, you don't need openvbx for this, just a line from a twimlet in your twilio settings and it works.

This may not be exactly what the OP needs, but I'll toss it out there. I purchased a biz plan through Hostgator - Web Hosting - Shared cPanel Web Hosting (not aff link) and received a TF number with the plan. Then I forward that number to my cell phone. Works just fine. When a client calls and I want them to be able to contact me directly I'll share my perz mobile number, but really don't have to. There isn't any limit or additional fee for incoming calls.

yes it is possible to get a tollfree number that can ring your personal number whenever a call comes on that number. you can configure a mobile dialer on your phone along with a toll free number and your problem is sorted. This way with the help of a toll free number you wont have to reveal your personal contact number. I have been using a toll free number by The Real PBX. You may check them out as well.

Toll free numbers are very effective in impressing customers care. You can have toll free vanity numbers that resemble to your business name and also easy to remember. Toll free providers allow call forwarding to other numbers as well so you won't have any problem.

Get800Today.com works great for us, plus you can setup the hours you want it forwarded to your business number, (or cell phone,) and you can record an away message or have your clients leave you a message.

Works great, I've been using it for 3 years!

All toll free numbers will redirect to another number, and I don't see why you cant have that number as your cell phone. But that will depend on the toll free vendor.

I had one with Vonage one time that would only redirect to one of my Vonage numbers. That was my only option with them, so it would not redirect to a cell phone.

But that is just one supplier and others may be different.

Can anyone recommend a place that can provide international toll free forwarding service?

I almost signed up with tollfreeforwarding.com but my research showed a lot of negative ratings and comments from all over the world .

      I am now considering alliancecall.com

My local telecoms does not allow forwarding to mobile number. They only allow toll free number to go to landline and then I can setup forwarding from landline to mobile number, but that means I have to pay for toll free number to landline and I also have to pay for landline to mobile number forwarding.

      Thank you
